  1. I find it annoying that the RB will be opening with Swan Lake because this could have a detrimental effect on the ticket sales for ENB's Swan Lake in August. ENB has far less money than the RB and really relies on the big classics at the Coli to balance the books and subsidise less popular (with the public) programmes. Could they not have chosen something else from their vast repertoire to open their season? I for one will not be going to the RB's Swan Lake.

Not only ENB but BRB are on in September with Swan Lake at The Lowry and later in their season. I beggars belief how the 3 big companies in the UK always seem to clash - so this season it's Swan Lake, last season it was a surfeit of Cinderellas. They ought to speak to each other. As for the RB season I can only say thank goodness Mayerling and Onegin are on, too much Wheeldon and McGregor for me so that'll save me loads of money.

  2. not sure if this is proper place to add this but perhaps someone will start new topic if that is better - POB announced their 12/13 season yesterday and sad to see no Raymonda - the big Nureyev production which will be occupying the bastille from mid-november to new year's eve will be his Don Q ?Aurelie and brand new etoile M. Hoffalt together again?? also there will be a gala on 6 march marking presumably 20 years and 2 months since Rudolf's death - had to queue to get onto website this morning as subscriptions start booking today!!!

het national's 12/13 season was announced too the other day - their website is all in dutch - unsurprisingly - but which regrettably i don't understand - does it say a christopher wheeldon production of full length Cinderella presumably for their christmas show??

Am I the only one who finds POBs website atrociously bad - slow to load, and we still can't pick our own seats let alone find a proper numbered seat map of the theatres! I think the 12/13 rep is very uninteresting to me and not even their Don Q is enticing me to even try to book something - not as good as the Bolshoi version sadly and at the Bastille you need a telescope to see :(

  3. He just sounds like a very confused young man who can't cope with the talent he was given. How ironic....some people train and try their whole lives and would love to be where he is and never will be; he is there, but doesn't want to be. A real pity....not only will I miss him, but also the partnership with Lauren Cuthbertson that I think would have developed into something very special, as it was well on the way to doing.

    Exactly.

  4. I can understand Malakhov being annoyed - he "found" Polina and put her her where she is. I wonder if the fact she got married last year has something to do with it all. Her new husband (not in the ballet world??) may have commitments and she would naturally wish to be where he is? Let's not forget that at 28 she is not a young dancer anymore and if she wants a family we may expect to see less of her.

  5. Sadly not apparent from where I was sitting. I was in the stalls and, although the centre block was full, I was the only person in my row in the side block.

Edited to add that my very good aisle seat in the side block of the stalls was £25 (and not £45), possibly because it was a matinee?

I was in the Circle and it was packed out - maybe people prefer the view from higher up. I reckon BRB broke even at the very least on Thursday.

  6. The Spring Passions matinee seemed to be a sell out on Thursday. The Hippodrome charges online are pretty steep at 5% too and that puts me off. A stalls ticket is about £45 compared to £37.50 or so at The Lowry in Manchester and I think the The Lowry is a better theatre and their charges are much lower. I detest these "handling fees" especially when I have done all the finger work on the computer!!

  7. Enjoyed the Spring Passions matinee yesterday. Daphnis and Chloe was not for me, it was a touch too far towards the modern end of the ballet spectrum for my liking, not that it was not very well danced by Chi Cao and Nao Sakuma. The leader of the Pirates Bryaxis was played by Tzu-Chao Chou - he really is one to watch! The Star of the show though was Two Pigeons. There was so much in there that I had not remembered since I last saw TP ages ago. I loved the gypsy scenes which brought back fond memories of Don Q from which I am suffering severe withdrawal symptoms given no Russian visit this summertr2.gifJo Caley made a lovely job of the young man I really enjoyed his portrayal and he has a nice comic touch. An excellent performance.

  8. I saw Veronika Part in the ABT London Season just before her much deserved promotion to Principal - of all the casts I wanted to she her because of what I had read about her and I also wanted to see Max (Beselerovsky) and Irina (Dvorovenko) because I had seen them in Berlin at Malakov & Friends Gala. Veronika was very good as I recall but I don't remember much detail now but her 32 fouettes were pulled off really well because I remember telling her so at the stage door! Hope ABT come back the UK sometime soon.

  9. I saw the Saturday matinee and all I can is BRILLIANT! It was a joy to watch. Alexander Campbell played Will Mossop with such a lovely humour he was great. What happened to his position at Royal Ballet? Their loss = BRB gain. Yet again the enjoyment of the dancers was palpable throughout the performance. I particularly enjoyed the lovely park dance scenes and lovely costumes and coloured pointe shoes! The whole thing was a real treat.
