Getting a good amount of training hours is very difficult in the U.K. if not at vocational school  particularly outside London. There are associate classes at weekends and a few CAT schemes but not many and it’s still hard to make up the hours. The syllabuses at local schools in my opinion are limiting too - rigid with the same exercises to the same music repeated in every class. Over 14 it’s a struggle to get high level training for most as typically there are only a couple of girls good enough in each school and they are spread out even  in a big city and those schools like to keep their best pupils. My daughter is at a very unusual school that  trains in a completely different way and she is extremely lucky because she can still live at home and get amazing training.   I think your description of training continental Europe is pretty similar to here, the gap between vocational and  non vocational is noticeable  . USA seems to offer more opportunities post 14 although I have heard it’s extremely expensive.

What school does your child train at out of interest thanks

  2. I’ve been looking through the forum for ages and can’t seem to find a post someone put up with all the links to previous conversations regarding auditioning for vocational school. Could someone repost here thank you

  3. Well done to your daughter on her exam. I can appreciate its hard to receive a lower score when you’re used to the graded system. I guess it’s worth remembering that the vocational exams are examining ballet in a different context, related to ballet being a “vocation” rather than just a hobbie. Don’t get me wrong, the vocational exams are open to all however the marking system is harder to fulfil as the technique and artistry required is more in line with what expected when training to a professional level. Hope that helps. And I hope your daughter isn’t disheartened.  Maybe run a grade class alongside the vocational classes so she gets to experience both standards

I think completing the grades going upwards is one thing eg: got as far as grade 4 when younger so now want to complete the exams going forwards so onto grade 5 grade 6 etc etc
It is doing them backwards which feels a bit surplus to me.
Would somebody who already had their Advanced one for example really want to go back and do Grade  one 🤔

Maybe it depends just how far along the exam system you are. So perhaps if at Grade 4 level say then going backwards to consolidate could sort of make sense especially if trying to better ones marks for earlier exams.
So perhaps aiming for an Honours type score could be a nice challenge to set oneself if going backwards as such.

Yes I think grade 1 or 2 isn’t the best place to start graded exam as an adult. I think grade 3/4 for a complete beginner. And those returning to dance possibly grade 4/5. The character dances are quite challenging if you haven’t done any character before and dance b can be a great alternative if you like less classical dance for a challenge. For me the reason I’ve decided to do my exams again for motivation,  discipline and confidence boasting. After having three children, it’s been nice to go back to class and focus on a goal rather than just a general class. And taking exams as an adult really is a completely different experience. Most people think it’s bizarre that I would take a ballet exam for enjoyment!!

  5. Never have I thought to complete the grades until reading this feed. I started taking vocational classes and did my intermediate foundation in April which went well. I have my intermediate this week and I don’t feel ready. I fell off pointe last Monday and twisted my ankle then went to buy new shoes ok weekend and none in stock 😢 so I’m going into my exam with sloppy shoes and my pointe work is shocking! I haven’t even managed to do the reverence on pointe! I haven’t secured 2 double pirouettes ever when practicing! Ahhhh stressed 😩 just going to try and enjoy it even though they are two examiners for the exam as they are standardising!! Looking forward to moving onto advanced foundation though 😊

  7. I’ve loved reading through varying opinions on Diamond celebration. It’s so interesting. I love the mixed views. That’s what makes dance so interesting. I agreed and disagreed massively with lots of opinions. It’s just amazing how one can see something so different to others. The highlight for me was Prima. I’d watch that again. Probably wouldn’t watch any of the other short works again. I’ll be honest, if I was given a ticket to go again I wouldn’t. Or I would just come to 2nd section to catch Prima again! There’s my 2 cents!

  8. I really struggling with homesickness at vocational school also. The only answer was coming home every weekend. Which was never the plan but we got all the family involved in pick up and drop off. I also found taking every day as it comes and make decision at end of term as to whether to carry on. I always choose to carry on. Although I spent most of the time saying I wanted to leave!!! It’s hard but when friendships get stronger it makes it easier.
