  1. I wasn't as impressed with all of the video clips and discussions as I normally am. They were quite short and not always very informative, particularly so with Requiem and plot details for Different Drummer. I agree that it's important to discuss the different parts of the Requiem Mass - I know them very well (not because I am religious but because I've both studied and performed them) and for me, I think it's important to discuss and understand them in the context of the ballet to appreciate it fully - though that may not be the case for everyone, of course. I would imagine that somebody not knowing the plot details of Different Drummer might be very confused about it. In fact, several audience members around me, though they loved the dancing, said they couldn't quite understand what was going on. As for the cast list sheet - I was very surprised about the one I was handed. Matthew Ball was never cast for 9th, so I can't understand why we were given the cast list we were. Lauren Cuthbertson and James Hay not dancing, I'm presuming was a last-minute thing, so that is understandable. In the scheme of things, it didn't matter to me as I knew who was cast for everything, but audience members around me did not and talked about who would be dancing and obviously didn't know the cast sheet was incorrect. @bridiem On a shallow note, I did like what Darcey was wearing and thought she looked amazing - she certainly brings glamour to the relay. Petroc is just an amazing presenter, IMO. I keep saying it, but he not only has the gravitas and knowledge needed, he also is such a professional, with a lovely, calm manner, is very likeable and I always think he supports Darcey really well. I think he's a brilliant choice. I can't deny, as lovely and likeable as Darcey is, that she does make me nervous and I feel uncomfortable for her when she stumbles - I understand that she is dyslexic and reading the auto-cue must be incredibly challenging for her, so have great sympathy in that respect. @alison The sounds issues happened three times and were maybe 10 seconds each time? I wouldn't say they were really bad at my cinema but they certainly were a bit distracting. They were distortions and the music sounded scratchy and incomplete, which it clearly was. It was annoying but in the scheme of things, I thought it could have been far worse - I'd have been far more upset if I'd lost the video feed, for example. I'm sorry it ruined bits for you though On a selfish note, I was just relieved that it didn't happen during Requiem!
  2. My cinema had about 20 there - which is a pretty poor show compared to other RB relays there. I'm not complaining - it was lovely and quiet!
  3. Indeed it was! I really enjoyed the cinema relay tonight - I think the three ballets worked well on the big screen and also thought the camera direction was excellent. Wonderful performances from all. The only slight technical hitch was in Danses Concertantes, where at the beginning, three small sections had distorted sound - wasn't a big deal for me. Congratulations to all dancers. I have to single out Isabella Gasparini - she really showed no nerves and was such a professional. I like her dancing and thought she did a great job, at did those around her. I felt Different Drummer really came across well on the big screen. There is such a lot of acting and I think I preferred on the screen to live at ROH, as it seemed more intimate and emotive so close up. Special mentions to Francesca Hayward, Marcelino Sambé and Francisco Serrano - they were all amazing. I couldn't take my eyes off of Hayward. Requiem was as beautiful as the last time I saw it. Stand outs for me were Melissa Hamilton - she was lyrical and so controlled, Sarah Lamb - so angelic, ethereal and beautiful, Lukas Braendsrod - so powerful and strong and, finally, William Bracewell - his solo was absolutely stunning, so controlled and emotive, full of his usual grace and elegance. What a fantastic evening! Congratulations to all.
  4. Sarah Lamb was exquisite last week, in my opinion. I was looking forward to seeing Cuthbertson but am not disappointed that I will see Lamb again. She was so angelic and ethereal.
  5. What a stunningly beautiful photo - I hope she's seen that as it's one to stick in a future autobiography. I'm really looking forward to seeing Yasmine in SL - I know she will be fantastic. I loved her Manon and felt she portrayed a great emotional depth and I would definitely book to see her in that role again. I therefore am positive I will love her Odette and Odile.
  6. This is what I am doing. I'm really looking forward to seeing Yasmine and Matthew dance as I have seen nearly everyone else dance Odette/Odile and Siegfried except these two. I am also seeing other pairings too later in the run. I can never get enough of SL! There is just so much to love and appreciate in the whole performance, IMO.
  7. Heaven - Romeo and Juliet (with my favourite pairing, of course!) Not so heavily - Anastasia Act III (Haven't found anything I dislike as much as that so far!)
  8. Most definitely. My cardigan is on and off - I tend to get hot and cold! 😳
  9. No. Me neither. I sit with my coat on my lap. I do not dress up either. I wear what's comfortable for me, as I have to walk and sit on trains. I wear flat shoes as I can no longer walk in the vertiginous ones I used to. The thought of walking to my local station, navigating stairs in the underground and walking from Holborn in high heels fills me with dread! As a youngster, I would not have even thought about it as being an issue.
  10. I always cough when there is loud music, as sometimes, I do get the sudden urge to do so. If I actually have a cough, I don't attend performances. Blowing is a tricky subject - as long as it's a discreet blow and not a 'foghorn' one, I don't think it's an issue. One elderly 'gentleman' last night kept falling asleep and snoring. It actually made me smile, especially as his partner kept poking him 😂
  11. I think that would be my one criticism of the orchestra. There really is nothing like a real pipe organ. Synthesised ones just cannot compete. Alas, ROH does not (understandably) have one, so the alternative had to suffice. I will go to the live cinema relay, I think, well, probably. I am still contemplating getting a ticket to see it live at ROH. I will ponder. I forgot to say, that I thought Sambè looked a little traumatised in the curtain calls. I wanted to hug him and say, 'It's ok.' I can see his performance took a lot from him emotionally.
  12. I saw photos of different dancers in the Captain and Doctor roles and thought they were indeed grotesque and quite terrifying - I didn't find them so last night and I don't quite know why. I can see what you mean. For me, I prefer Pie Jesu to be sung by a higher-registered voice - more akin to a chorister, with less vibrato. That's just my personal preference though and it was a lovely performance by the soprano last night. I'd see all the casts if I could but I was thrilled with last night's Requiem one. They were stunning. I would have liked to have seen Vadim Muntagirov in Danses Concertantes though, as I've never seen him in such a role. I did have a ticket to opening night but didn't go. Well, I thought so - it was very suggestive and I felt the Drum Major was a very powerfully seductive character - 'look at me and what I can do'. I have to admit though that all I could think was - please, please don't drop it! I really liked the character and thought Serrano was excellent with lots of charisma. I don't think it's inappropriate to ask here
  13. I had a fantastic view last night and could actually see the expressions on the dancers' faces really well - which was so lovely, especially in Different Drummer and Requiem. I had two short ladies in front of me, which is always good when you are short yourself. However, I am getting better at picking seats where I know I'll get a good view.
  14. Yes. The soloists and chorus were beautiful, weren't they? As were the orchestra. Though Sanctus, Pie Jesu and In Paradisum are my favourites musically, I particularly enjoyed the baritone, Josef Jeongmeen Ahn, in Libera Me - I thought he was absolutely superb. I felt very, very fortunate as well, though I do whenever I attend ROH - my bank balance, not so much! 😂
  15. I like the font. Makes it much easier to read! I was surprised I liked Different Drummer - I had a feeling it would be along the lines of Anastasia Act III, which I really disliked, so I was pleased that I didn't feel the same way. I too thought the dancing was extraordinary and compelling, as were parts of the choreography. I forgot to mention Francisco Serrano, who I thought was fantastic too - though I always feel nervous when baton twirling is involved in the performance! He did a great job though. It was a great opportunity seeing it, I agree, and I am glad I did. It's actually nice to be wary going into a performance and then to be pleasantly surprised . As I said earlier, I would watch it again in a triple bill but would not go out of my way to see it otherwise. I would like to see Osipova as Marie as I think her take on the character would be very interesting. Danses Concertantes was such fun, I agree and yes, sunny is a great description as I smiled a lot all the way through it. Requiem though, for me, was so moving and the star of the show. I still have the vision of Sarah Lamb floating in - she was so serene and majestic. I'd go and see that again in a heartbeat. Good to know you got a good view at those prices!
  16. I would agree - it certainly wouldn't have shocked me as a younger teenager. Though the content was dark (I mean, it's not a nice story, is it?) I was surprised that it wasn't shocking at all, as I expected it to be more explicitly violent and it wasn't. I also didn't find Doctor or Captain alarming - some of the photos I had seen previously, depicted them as being quite terrifying and I didn't feel that last night. In fact, I found the gaoler scene in Manon more disturbing and unsettling overall really. Then again, perhaps that's because I was emotionally invested in Manon and I wasn't during Different Drummer.
  17. I really enjoyed tonight. Danses Concertantes was fun! Lighthearted and quirky. I liked the costumes, as from where I was sitting they really added to the performance and the head pieces looked good too. I liked the set and the orchestra did a great job. Lovely dancing from all. A special mention goes to Isabella Gasparini - she did brilliantly - really took on the role of the lead ballerina with confidence and panache - and I just love her smile. The two supporting ladies - Sae Maeda and Ashely Dean (thanks @Dawnstar for identifying them for me!) were brilliant too. Everyone else was excellent. Different Drummer. Well, I was surprised to find that I liked it - I don't think 'enjoyed' would be the right word here, as it was quite disturbing. However, it was danced beautifully by Sambè and Hayward, especially. I liked the choreography, some of the lifts and turns and dragging along the floor (how Hayward's shoulders weren't dislocated, I'll never know!) were very impressive. It wasn't a work that filled me with joy - more I was fascinated by it, but I did think the performances were first class. I thought the orchestra were wonderful again. I would see it again in a mixed bill but it wouldn't be at the top of my list to see. I am glad I saw it though. Requiem was just beautiful - that is the only way I can describe it. I felt so emotional throughout it but also a sense of calm, of peace. Sarah Lamb was an angel suspended. She danced so gracefully and ethereally - she was perfect. Everyone else was brilliant too, of course. Special mentions go to Melissa Hamilton (she was stunning, as usual), the lovely William Bracewell (his dancing was so, so beautiful and I could have watched him forever) and Lukas Braendsrod (his strength when lifting Sarah Lamb was so impressive and he was so confident). Everyone else was wonderful as well. The orchestra, chorus and soloists were perfect. I love Faurè's Requiem and they didn't disappoint. What a wonderful ending to a fantastic evening. It was lovely to meet forum members again and to have a companion on the train home! Well done to all who performed tonight.
  18. Thank you - what you suggest makes total sense. Having been there tonight, I did like the costumes and didn't find the headpieces strange at all. From the stalls, they looked quite nice!
