  1. Shobana Jeyasingh Dance from 7pm today on facebook, I will aim to post a link.

Don't forget we're broadcasting the next of our SJD SHORTS this evening (Monday) at 7pm (UK) featuring Outlander & Études.

Both works were inspired by incredible art, and performed within a gallery setting. Afterwards Shobana will be chatting about the works with Guardian Dance Writer Sanjoy Roy, and will answer your questions online.

Loved Balamouk.  What a vibrant way to start a day.   Everything fits into Ocha's final smile.  So, so pleased that Arthur Mitchell - every bit a pioneer like de Valois - was able to see this before he left us.  Yet one more testament to his arching achievement in birthing DTH.

Thanks Bruce I loved it too. Seeing DTH's work has been good.

Is it the shortness or the non-story-ness that you appreciate?  As I've indicated several times, I've at times found it a little stressful trying to fit in a full-length ballet before it disappears from view, so shorter works have often been a better bet for me.

I think it's both. I find it restful and somehow it feeds my spirit by looking at the moment and shapes that flow with the music.

If I watch a full length at home I tend to break it down into sections.

  5. I decided not to feel guilty that I couldn't watch everything and strangely enough I found that at this time I am only watching short non story ballets, not sure why. It has been wonderful to see so many works that are new to me and from places I might never have gone. I hope that ballet companies take note and keep streaming their work, for proper money of course.

I am very appreciative of all the suggestions here. This forum and ballet has been a life line for me, and the general niceness of people with opinions expressed but no name calling etc, so THANK YOU  one and all.

What a 20th Century masterwork Jerome Robbins' Glass Pieces is.  Thanks so PAB (Pennsylvania Ballet) for reminding us of this fact.  Thought Maslova was haunting in the second movement's PDD opposite Jemel Johnson.  She reminded me of the RB's Anna Rose O'Sullivan.  (Would love to see her in this extraordinary movement someday.  That would be a treat.)

Thanks for drawing this to my attention, I loved Glass Pieces when SFBallet did it earlier in Lockdown and it is wonderful to see it again.

  7. I really liked LOUIS STIENS'S MESSENGER from the Stuttgart Ballet, it's streaming until June 28th, 22:00 h (CET)

'Louis Stiens's choreography is adventurous and raw and defies characterisation. In Messenger he explores the dynamics between a messenger/prophet/harbinger of change and a community which at times embraces, at times rejects the newcomer. Stiens’ one-act ballet is a compelling study set to Czech composer Ondřej Adámek’s orchestral work Follow me.'

  8. When Arthur Mitchell created Dance Theatre of Harlem, he envisioned a racially diverse ballet company performing demanding repertory at the highest level of quality.

This week, our Virtual Ballet Series continues with a ballet that epitomizes Mr. Mitchell's vision - Balamouk by celebrated choreographer, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Commissioned by New York City Center for the 2018 Fall For Dance festival, Balamouk, set to the intoxicating sounds and rhythms of klezmer music, tells the story of a group of colorful individuals on a journey of hope. Fueled by a mesmerizing range of vibrant movement, Balamouk transports audiences to a realm of magical realism.

Worked okay for me on Firefox - once I'd worked out that I hadn't put in a postcode and that's why the "Complete purchase" button wouldn't work :)

I worked out that I needed a new account! As I am dyslexic I often don't take in all the information on a long email. However, all is good now and I have just seen the wonderful Vadim dance, I was nearly crying it was so emotional to see him on the stage of ROH. I can only wish for more ballet on these evenings.

  10. Back in March, we were rehearsing a new production in Senegal with Pina Bausch Foundation and Ecole des Sables. 38 dancers from 14 African countries had come together to revive a masterpiece as it had never been seen before – Pina Bausch's The Rite of Spring, created in 1975. It was going to be incredible.

When Covid-19 forced the world into lockdown, we had to halt rehearsals and cancel performances.

But before the lockdown rules came into effect the company had time for one last rehearsal. On the beach. In Toubab Dialaw, Senegal. At dusk. Set to Stravinsky's rousing music. Luckily a filmmaker captured the whole thing on camera. We knew we had to share something this special with the world…

On 1 July from 12:00 pm BST, we're making Dancing at Dusk – A moment with Pina Bausch’s The Rite of Spring available to watch from Vimeo on Demand for 30 days.

(Pre-order now or sign up to get a reminder on our website: https://sadl.rs/DancingAtDusk)

I can't get the link to work here, but if you go the you tube trailer below the link works from there.
