14 Feb has good SCS still showing, not a popular choice for a St Valentine's date night 🙂

A Wednesday night would require 2 days off work, an overnight stay and cause multiple childcare issues....please don't tempt me!

My wedding anniversary was last Sunday and I woke up next to my mum in a double bed in a Travelodge in Battersea follwing the opening night of Don Q. Didn't see my husband until I got home at 11pm that night. Manon on Valentines Day mignt be pushing my luck...

  2. I wanted two Manons - Bracewell cast on 20th Jan, and Ball cast on 19th. I was thrilled to get SCS for Bracewell, and couldn't believe my luck when I also managed to pick up SCS for the Ball cast. Then the dreaded error message! Lost the Ball tickets, but thankfully, retained the Bracewell ones, which was my must-see cast.

In days gone by, if I couldn't get SCS I would have gone for amphi, but not at those prices- I will hold out for picking up an SCS later on.

I have a spare SCS for the Bracewell cast if anyone needs it. It's D5, so technically restricted view - but I think it's ok.

And big shout out to Cecchetti teacher Emily Wallace in Sunderland, and her adult class 'older' students who recently passed with merits and distinctions their Cecchetti class exam, Standard 3.   Anne who gained a distinction is 75.

Which brings us back to the beginning of this thread.  Seriously, Cecchetti is for all who want to learn.

I know Emily (we both studied with Ann Loades). I'll pass this on!

ENB's Manon is the MacMillan version but using the Royal Danish Ballet's set and costumes (let's not go there with the puff ball costumes in the brothel).  ENB had done a run of Manon prior to the 18/19 season - maybe 14/15 or 15/16.  It absolutely did not sell well (most sadly) in Manchester so the company abandoned plans to show it in Liverpool the following season.  IIRC I saw in that first run Daria Klimentova with Friedemann Vogel...

I think it was earlier, Jan. Klimentova mentions dancing it with ENB in her autobiography which was published in - I think - 2013 and would have been written beforehand.

Well there isn't supposed to be any industrial action today yet my train to London was nearly 15 mins late & I'm currently standing at Kings Cross waiting to see if my train home is going to be any more than the currently stated 20 mins late. I wish the Australian Ballet hadn't held their gala on a Sunday!

Come and join me Dawnstar - I'm in the pub at King's Cross!

    Hope your train comes soon.

"The ROH is aiming to set prices which achieve maximum occupancy and yield with as little a headline price rise as possible, minimising discounting and continuing to ensure it remains as accessible sible as possible.”

I understand headline pricing as 'tickets from £x to £y' or sometimes just 'tickets from £x' - as opposed for instance to dynamic pricing where prices rise and fall in accordance with demand. So, it fits with what we are seeing - they are playing around with pricing *within* that range, raising prices in the mid and lower ranges of the house so as to maximise yield without impacting on the top price.

  7. I wanted SCS for opening night of Don Q as I'm in London already that day for ENB, but didn't book as there were none left - so didn't book anything in this BP which is the second BP in a row as I also didn’t go to anything at the ROH post-Cinderella last season other than the RBS matinee. Haven't booked anything else although will see Northern Ballet's triple in Leeds and see Ballet Black regularly in York.

In the past if I hadn't managed SCS I would have booked Amphi but that's no longer a viable option.

For me it's a mix of price hike and unappealing repertoire.

  8. I didn't know Lindsay well but she and Keith were always a friendly part of the old ballet.co.uk community. I still have a postcard somehere that she sent me along with a book or DVD; a lovely Ballets Russes costume design reproduction that I had on my teenage bedroom wall. A few years ago I bought a standing ticket from them from this forum and when they handed it over they remembered me from the old days and we had a lovely chat. I've since been Facebook friends with both of them and enjoyed following their updates from lives well lived and full of travel and culture. More recently it was clear Lindsay wasn't getting out and about as much but it was still a shock to hear the news on Monday. My sincerest condolences to Keith.

So I failed my adv1. I’m absolutely gutted. I scored mostly 6s, a few 5s and a 4 for my allegro (I messed up on the day so was  pleased with that one) but for some reason that neither me or my teachers can understand, I was scored only a 3 for my variation technique so failed! Overall my score was a couple of marks away from a merit but I still failed.

    I’m absolutely gutted!

Edited to add I scored 6 for variation performance which is extremely baffling that I can perform well in a dance that I am not deemed to have the required technical ability to dance!

Lots of students of all ages fail Adv 1 first time - not on overall marks but because they failed one section. I've known people fail on a section (usually pointe) and then do it again in a few months and get distinction.

Which variation did you do? Could you look at whether the other one suits you better?

Daphnis and Chloe was not neglected at first. It was revived in 1994 in new classically based designs which all but killed its theatrical effectiveness since the whole idea behind the work and its Craxton designs had been to set the action of the ballet in a Greece in which the old gods were still powerful. In other words the intention was to set it in the pre-package  holiday Greece which Ashton and Craxton had encountered in the years immediately after the war The ballet was danced in its 1994 designs during the 94/95 season and the 96/97 season after which it was dropped. I have always suspected that it was dropped when the company finally realised how much it cost to stage a revival of it.

I'm fairly sure Daphnis and Chloe was performed in the early 2000s at the ROH. I seem to remember seeing Cojocaru in it (with Bonelli??) and Nunez in the secondary female role. I think it was filmed for TV.

I can't either, but it doesn't stop me from wishing some of them would be. I'd be really interested to see Checkmate or Job or The Gods Go A-Begging. I wouldn't mind if I was the only person in the audience, though whichever company was performing obviously would!

I think that like me, Dawnstar, you want to see those ballets particularly because they featured so heavily in the Lorna Hill 'Wells' books!

PS Do we know that Cope is coaching somewhere again? He left the RB to everyone’s dismay some years back. (I’m just checking because quite a few statements get made on BCF which are misleading.)

I think Cope is now living in Portugal. The source for that info is publicly available - a report from either Ballet Association or London Ballet Circle from a few years ago.
