I can’t understand why they closed the whole school another school / collage had 24 cases the other week and 3 were in one year of BA’s. It’s been heart breaking , my DD flat Got it last September and she had to isolate for a whole month as the periods reset itself each time someone tested positive, she chose dance for assessments which were assessed dancing in her flat kitchen and has come out with lower grade than her friends who chose drama vocal and singing, she’s never done a live performance  in 3 years, they have one evening next week for agents and parents to watch! Theve been given just a week to learn it all.     I could cry for all these students.   So many of my dd friends have decided to take time out or even leave the industry already

They discussed it at length with PHE, but were instructed to close. It was definitely a scenario they had tried to avoid, but with an order from PHE they didn’t have any choice.

The narrative from Gavin Williamson about schools sending too many students home is infuriating. The schools are only doing this under instruction.

It’s so sad for the students and staff who have worked so hard to get the show ready. And for everyone who was looking forward to watching. I’m not sure how much freedom we have gained with all these vaccinations if we are still cancelling events and closing schools.

  2. The artwork just explains the different aspects of the various LGBT+ flags. It doesn’t promote or discourage, it’s just a completely neutral presentation of the flags. RBS are acknowledging and celebrating the diverse community that forms their past, present and future. Your comments seem to imply that they are promoting a gender ideology, which is simply not the case.

  3. I have found last years MDS photos… you need your P60, March payslip, documentation to show superannuation and/ or pension contributions, self assessment form (if self employed), business accounts if appropriate, plus evidence of all other income, such as child maintenance, interest on accounts, pensions, dividends, unearned income of children etc.

If you expect that your earnings will be significantly different in the coming year, you can fill in an extra page for a current year assessment.

I have never been asked for evidence of child benefit, which comes under non-taxable social security benefits, presumably because it is standard for all families that are in receipt of it.

I completed last year’s form on 25th June, and that was a year that it arrived late due to delays at the DfE, so this year is very late… I expect to have to have a fairly quick turnaround on it!

You get sent a booklet along with the form, which explains how to complete it. It is fairly straightforward, but does take ages the first time you do it!

    Good luck!

  4. We had an email to say it was delayed because they are waiting for information from the DfE.

If it’s the first time you have filled one in, you could get together your P60 and three months of payslips. That will definitely be required. A top tip is to photograph each page, as next year’s will be almost identical and it saves a lot of time! xx

  5. It is true that associate schemes are not necessary if your DD is planning on becoming a dance teacher. However, don’t rule them out completely, as they serve a wider purpose than preparing for a performance career. Associates are a good way of experiencing non-syllabus classes with a different regular teacher, good for networking with dancers from outside your immediate area, and can give a useful link to a prestigious institution, which certainly won’t do any harm on a CV or when attracting parents if she wants to open her own dance school one day. They are expensive, but if that is not a problem then there are lots of advantages to doing them.

Intermediate is a vocational exam, which is required for teaching as a registered teacher. It’s often taken at around the same time as grade 6 or so.

If she wants to open her own studio, being able to teach more than one style will make this easier, especially in the early days when she may be trying to teach all or most of her lessons herself so she can start to make a living. You don’t need to be able to teach all styles, but if there are big gaps in your offering as a studio you can risk having to share students with (and possibly lose students to) another dance school.

If anyone is selling a JA character skirt to roughly the measurements below, I would be interested for my pupil:

    Waist: 56cm

Length waist to below knee: 54cm

    Thank you!

The I have one on another post is a bit bigger, but if you take up the hem and move the button, it would potentially last until Year 6, if you don’t find a smaller one.

  8. I have an almost unused (probably 30 minutes wear in total!) RBS JA royal blue character skirt 58.5cm waist, 63cm long. £20+ postage.

I also have an unworn JA white leotard (size 1... I bought the wrong size and hand-washed it but it was never worn). £10 + postage

Same here, I asked but I don’t think anyone knows. There’s three Eastleigh Yr5’s on here then including your daughter :)

It always used to be JA1 (Year 4-5) before lunch (about 11am I think) and JA2 (Year 6) in the early afternoon, but I can’t remember the exact timings as it was a while ago for us. Miss Cooper is the loveliest teacher you will ever meet!

Congratulations to the DC with places! My DD has also been offered a place - she's very excited 😊. Bit of a random question, does anyone know if they are allowed to take hair dryers?

Hairdryers are fine, but not hairspray or other aerosols because they set off the fire alarms… gel mist or pots of gel plus water spray and a stick deodorant are the way to go!

(Sliders are also useful for getting to and from the showers!)

If anyone asked me now, would you do it all over again? Mmmm I may not. But then we don’t have any regrets either. We started off on a slow stroll until about yr9, winding up to the 100m sprint by the start of yr11 (audition season)!!

It is terribly difficult as it’s not just one element ie homework to sort out (if only life was that simple) it’s a whole plethora of things to consider . Including demands from other siblings, work commitments, health, wealth, friendships, school trips, sports days 😩social life (what ever that is🤣)  etc ..........

What works for one might not work for another. By all means listen to others but don’t question yourself and been swayed by peer pressure. You will know deep down what is the right thing for your Dd and your family.

I wish you all the best. Just remember nothing is set in stone, every dancers  journey to their end goal is different. 🩰🤞🏼

Family circumstances have been key for us too. I was always the ‘ballet parent’, and between JAs, festivals and workshops would often be tied up with taxiing DD to dance during weekends and school holidays.

My younger child has loved having his mum back since DD started at vocational school, and now exeat weekends and school holidays mean quality time with his big sister too!

  12. There are so many schools of thought on this, and there will always be stories of students that got into a top vocational upper school without attending a lower school first. Every child is different, and every situation is different. For DD, the overall experience of a vocational lower school is really enriching. Inspirational teachers, beautiful working environment, lots of ‘wider dance education’ and the opportunity to relax with her friends in the evening because the art of juggling academics with vocational training is done for her.

She has friends back home who are opting to audition to go straight into upper schools. At the moment their lives are full, going from school to dance every day and almost no down time, but this works for them, just like vocational school works for DD.

Would DD do just as well at upper school auditions without lower school training? Impossible to say. Is her life richer for being at a lower school? Absolutely! We are definitely doing what works best for DD, which is all each child needs.

  13. If you are thinking about affordability of the application process, bear in mind that travel can also be expensive as the start time is often during peak times on the train, and early starts can require an overnight hotel stay. White Lodge finals is over two days, so that actually ran to two nights in a hotel for us as an 8:30am start needed us to be in Richmond the night before. We had great fun, though, so considered it all to be money well spent. Booking the same hotel as JA friends made the whole process really lovely!

  14. Definitely socks while still primary age. Also elastics on ballet shoes as they may well take shoes and socks off, and need to be able to put them back on themselves. YDs and full-time students all wear waist elastics (belts) as they help to show alignment, so wear one if you have one.

Yup, Bristol Road. Depending on which way you approach it you may need to drive straight past and loop back when u turns are permitted.

    Good luck!

  15. Most secondary schools in my area (South East) have a dance department, and employ graduates with a PGCE. It’s a great way of having a secure income and comparatively sociable working hours (unless it’s production week!). The RAD degree with teacher training is probably the most well respected course provider. (Not least because most headteachers don’t know the difference between RAD and RBS!)

I know a few colleagues who work part time in a secondary school, and part time at their own dance school. It’s a good way to get the best of both worlds, at least initially.

It was the first and last time I sat in the balcony, the ledge was a bit of an issue for me, as was the woman to my right who told me to let her know if she was in my way before it started (she wasn't) and then proceeded to lean over the ledge and get in the way (though not pictured here thankfully)....I had no idea if moving my seat away in to the 'aisle' would block other peoples view. I'd also never given much consideration to the position of all those wall lamps until sitting here.

Ah, slightly obscured. That’s a shame! Still a better view than the back of the amphi, so we’ll take it as a win. We like to go ‘cheap and often’! Thank you for sharing your photo. It’s good to know what to expect.
