  1. Hi everyone,

I am Elia, new to the forum. I am interested in finding a SS for my daughter, who is 12.  I thought of it rather late, is there any application dates still open in London area or elsewhere that I can apply. I checked on OPES which sent the application form already but I am totally unaware of the procedure. Are there any photos included in the application form, application form via post or email? I have also seen the RAD, the London and Devon SS. The Devon offers the residential also which would be a nice experience. Does anyone has any suggestion/advice/opinion for any of the SS?

    :)

Thank you very much and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Welcome to the forum Elia, OPES is a first come first served summer school & the only photo required on the application is a passport photo. My dd is doing it this year for the first & we got a confirmation email about a week after we sent the form off

  2. It is a very surprising yes... of course very aware of all the no ...

Good luck for the future to all the DC ...

Congratulations to your dd Hopeful. I'm sure this is the start of a very exciting journey for her

  3. In shock to say my DD is one of the 2 JA girls from Eastleigh...

There are 2 girls and 2 boys with yes emails from our centre.

Those that have followed my story will know that we started this road with a "no" email from RB in yr4... So just goes to show it really does just mean "not yet"

Please don't let your lovely DC give up :x

Huge congratulations to your dd. What an inspirational story

  4. Soo sorry to hear of all the no's & thinking about those dd's & their parents. Remember what a huge achievement it was for all of them making the finals & how proud they should all be of themselves. I'm a great believer in when one door closes another door opens & a bend in the road is definitely not the end of the road for any of them.

  5. As DS now knows, I'm very, very proud (and in absolute shock!!!) to say that he has been offered a place at WL for Y7 in September. Good luck to everyone still waiting. xxx

What amazing news!!! Well done to your ds & good luck with the exciting journey ahead.

Thinking of all of those that are still awaiting emails

  6. I would recommend Dancique in Birmingham too. Even if you aren't local it's definitely worth travelling to as they stock lots of different makes & spend as much time as it takes to find the right shoe. After experiencing a fitting with little choice for dd's first pointe shoe fitting I would definitely recommend going somewhere with lots of choice & an experienced fitter. Helene in Dancique fitted dd & was wonderful

  7. I'm working on the basis that we will hear at the end of the week. No insider knowledge, but im presuming they're so busy with WL finals results, that those children will get their results first, perhaps older years finals today, boys finals tomorrow, yr 7 girls finals Thursday, leaving summer schools to hear late Thursday/Friday, simply because they said we'd hear this week.

I don't envy the admin staff at all at RBS this time of year, imagine the pressure to get them all out, on time! And correct! You seriously would be double and triple checking your work this week!

Good luck to all. Hope it's sooner xxxx

I think you are probably right Balletmummy55. I definitely don't envy the admin with so much to get out in the same week

  8. are we meant to hear today?? I know it will be a No but just want to know!!!

We are the same. Not holding out much hope but just want to know. I read on here that we would hear this week though haven't seen a specific day mentioned.

  9. Hi,  we will be looking into summer schools next year, so reading all this has been great  Thank you.  Just a question, Do the children have to be at a certain grade for the summer schools or doesn't this matter.  My little girl will be 10 when we apply next year but at the moment is 9 and in grade 2 RAD

Some summer schools ask for the children to be working at or above a certain level to apply while others don't but ask what their most recent exam passed is or what grade they are currently in presumably to know what group to put them in at the summer school

  10. I'm not familiar with grades as no experience of ballet before DD started. It seems she is doing 2 exam boards so IDTA grade 5 and inter foundation RAD. Does this sound right?

Yes that sounds about right to me. Some schools seem to do the graded exams alongside vocational exams while others like dd's school do either or after grade 4

  11. Did this application consist of only pictures or did the application form ask pertinent questions such as training, length of training, etc.? I'm just wondering how they will decide based on pictures alone!

They asked on the form what their last exam passed was, current level of study, hours of ballet per week, hours of other dance per week though I have no idea how much any of this is taken into account when selecting.

  12. Of course TooTu I wasnt thinking of the difference in days. My DD is 12 and I think a week would be too much away from home.. We don.t have time to arrange for her teachers help with the positioning. Im a bit worried as a non dancing Mum that I cant advise her on the positioning. The drawings are not great so we will just have to muddle on.The drawings don't really show what they are looking for or can I just not see it? Any idea what they are looking for so that I can advise her re positioning.

The closing date is 10th March Toomuch so i assume a few weeks after that.

I think you'll be fine positioning your dd. Dd's teacher is just the type of teacher that likes to oversee these things. Would taking a few shots of each pose & sending them to your dd's teacher to chose the best be an option for you?

  13. Thanks everyone, bare feet etc did seem to make sense. She has a few leotards so sticking with a simple black one. I did look at OPES Sarah but its about £200 more than Elmhurst. I will look for the thread. Did you take the photographs yourself TooTu. Also do you have to print the photographs off and send them in? Unless Im missing some text there isnt much information.

I would stick to a simple not too fussy leotard. I took the photos myself but dd's teacher positioned her & I just took them on a mobile phone & printed them off in a photo kiosk to post off with the application form. Also don't forget about the passport photo because I very nearly forgot to put it in this year.

OPES is a full week in comparison to Elmhursts 3 days which would account for the difference in price. DD is doing OPES this year for the first & really looking forward to it too.
