It’s the mazurka with me, which I can’t complain about.
That's still popping back from time to time, too - but as it's the bit I've known since childhood, having been a classic of my school orchestra's repertoire, that's less annoying.
-
Not TOO soon , I hope - I've still got a bit of the music stuck in my head (the bit when all the dolls start dancing) and it's showing no sign of going away after several weeks...

I can't see a post about NBC on the spring casting thread 🤔
Could a link to the post be put in here to save hassle going to another thread?
4 minutes ago, David said:Can I echo this please. Do we actually know what they are bringing? Is there information re the the NBC visit somewhere on the ROH website? If so can someone help with the link please.
I think bridiem's reference to the Spring casting thread may have been related to her statement about the Heritage programme, not NBC's visit.

I am now hearing excellent things about Dinara Alieva's debut last night. Sadly if I want to see/hear one of her performances I will need to stomach Oren again.

Very sad not to see Vadim as Onegin, but what a great opportunity for Reece.
Vadim is a lovely dancer in absolutely everything, but somehow Reece strikes me as more suited to the character...

So did I... but on the plus side, I thought Itziar was a terrific replacement for Lauren in the previous run. It's so rare that she gets to play a romantic lead.

The Royal Ballet has reported on Twitter that Reece Clarke has been promoted to First Soloist.

Oh! Interesting... so still no Tatiana for Lauren

I saw that one critic gave him (and his hirer) both barrels the other day. It’s one of the RO’s great mysteries that he returns every year - I wish someone could explain it to me!Without naming any names, I have had this discussion with:
- principals
- choristers
- orchestral musicians
...and none of them seem to know!
(Edited to add: I hope this post doesn't break forum rules. If they DID know, I know the forum wouldn't let me tell you, but they don't, so it's a moot point.)

I didn’t book anything this run as the various Violettas haven’t set my heart racing, although in one or two cases the names are new to me so perhaps one should make the effort (after all, this is traditionally a part when new voices break through). Does anyone have tips?
I saw Hrachuhi Bassenz on opening night and she was fine, but no more, while the tenor Liparit Avetisyan really struggled with the conductor's tempo choices and kept drifting flat.
My hot tip, were you to pick one cast this time, would be Kristina Mkhitaryan, who I saw in the same role at Glyndebourne, and impressed me very much. She gave the whole performance a real sense of heavy melancholy. I'm going to see one of hers in a couple of weeks' time, and she doesn't have Daniel Oren's conducting to contend with, either.
But I fear last January's marvellous run, not all of which had Placido Domingo in it, has ruined me forever.

Mark Kelly's beginner class at 7:15 on Thursdays at Rambert also appears to have space: https://www.rambert.org.uk/join-in/adults/ballet-beginners-class/
And it begins THIS WEEK...
-
One more thing - all of Morley College's beginner classes are still showing availability for the upcoming term. Again, I can't recommend them personally as I haven't tried them. https://www.morleycollege.ac.uk/courses/12896-ballet-beginners

Sorry I’m going to miss you in class this term Ruth! I had hoped to make it but not ready for the level of Alex’s barre in the more advanced class it’s a lovely barre but at Intermediate level though the centre is easier and probably what I would call Elementary level.
I am starting off with a very beginners ballet class in Brighton for this term in mid Jan and I know the teacher really well as usually do her more advanced classes so she is very understanding of the situation. I’m quite nervous about it nevertheless!
I bumped into Alex at the ROH so he knows I’m starting again in April.Glad to hear your ankle is on the mend!

Hannah seems to have a galaxy brain for people and faces ( and their dancing)
Very true! I wonder if she still remembers my name as I haven't taken her class for 6 months and was thinking of doing it this Friday...

The other problem with Alex Simpkins's class (which runs twice on Tuesdays, at 18:10-19:40 and then 19:50-21:20) is that this term is already sold out - though I too would recommend it. I've been taking this class for a year and am moving into his Thursday Improvers class this term.
Some other options for you:
LinMM mentioned English National Ballet at their new HQ on London City Island. They have three courses of Absolute Beginner classes running this term. The Monday one with Mark Kelly is sold out, but Tuesdays (20:20 with Sarah Golightly) and Thursdays (19:00 with Hannah Cameron) are still showing places available. Sadly the one-off taster class tomorrow is sold out. I have no personal experience of either of these teachers, though I did some taster classes with Mark Kelly last term. They have lovely new professional studios and a live pianist. https://www.ballet.org.uk/event/absolute-beginners/
.
Natalie Krapf has a Ballet Introduction class at The Place on Mondays at 18:30: https://www.theplace.org.uk/adult-dance-classes-spring-2020 (edited to add: sorry, I missed the part where you said you'd tried this and it was sold out)

TodayTix has another deal on. It’s marketed as a Boxing Day sale, and I received an email about it giving me “advance access as a loyal customer”, so I’m guessing if you can’t see it yet you’ll be able to on Boxing Day.
Dress Circle seats are down to £35-£45, Upper Circle down to £20. But again, you can’t select your seat.

The thing is, matinee start times vary so greatly at the RB that people usually know to check anyway. Not so much with evenings.

Concerto O'Sullivan replaces Takada
Oh excellent! Double Anna-Rose (as she's also Dorabella at these performances). I couldn't get to any of her scheduled Concerto performances, so I'm very happy about this - while obviously also wishing Takada well.

Note to self: do not try working to Shostakovich's First(?) Piano Concerto again (it was just on the radio). The last movement's so totally manic that it made my head spin!
Looking forward to seeing this again soon.
There's something particularly catchy about anything in a fast 7 time!

Front row Stalls Circle, round the sides a bit, gives a slightly angled view but would tick all the boxes you’ve described.

The original characters names are completely different and basically the character of Swanhilda is called Clara and Coppelia is called Olimpia the only similar name is Coppelius which is the same in both and they are into the same kind of thing...well sort of!!
Olympia and Coppelius also make it into Offenbach's opera Tales of Hoffmann...

I was very impressed with Anna-Rose O’Sullivan, for only her second time in the role she was remarkably good. Not only is her dancing secure, but she has the confidence to carry the performance. In terms of very picky detail, her Rose Adagio may have been slightly less secure than her debut but the solo after the Rose Adagio was extremely well finished. She has absolutely blossomed in the last year.
Yes, I was very impressed. Am I right in thinking that it wasn't just only her second time in the role, but only her second time in the lead of any full-length classical tutu ballet?

There were pretty much no decent tickets available for the first night of The Dante Project when booking opened for Premium 2 Friends!
When I booked as a Supporting Friend last week, it appeared that the whole of the Balcony (except boxes) was unavailable for Dante, for some reason.

Will tourists flock to NBC in the same way that they flock to the Bolshoi, though? For those who aren't ballet aficionados, the Royal Ballet and the Bolshoi (and possibly the Mariinsky) might be the only companies a lot of people have heard of. Don't some of the prominent international companies which tour to e.g. the Coliseum have trouble selling tickets?
