Hi my daughter has had a yes from Tring with a funding audition for year 8 which is great news and very exciting. I am slightly confused though as the letter is offering her a day place not a boarding place which she would need. Does anyone know whether this is standard and that she could be offered a boarding place after the audition or should I let them know that she would need a boarding place? Any advice would be great 👍

We were told at the audition that most of the letters offered day places but not to worry because usually everyone who needed a boarding place was able to be accommodated. Everyone I’ve spoken to with an offer has had a day place offer not boarding.

She was absolutely terrified of all the super-flexible stretching going on in the waiting room! BUT, she came out of the audition saying it was brilliant!

Its her her first experience of an audition and I think she’s hooked!

Learning to ignore the competitive stretching is an important part of audition prep!

I went to the ROH stage door last night as I had some photos I hoped to be autographed.  Lovely chats with Bennet Gartside (who signed my Judas Tree curtain call pic) and Lara Turk and a few hellos and "lovely show" with some other dancers and stage management.  But, I also had a Sylvia curtain call pic with Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov and I was hoping they would come out sooner rather than later.  About 2305, Marianela came down, still in her tights but with a dance cardigan and wonderful woolly salopettes and boots over her shoes.  Even though she is still recovering from illness (which wasn't at all noticeable in her performance), she stayed for about 25 minutes.  Everyone who wanted to see her, queuing as if to meet Santa Claus,  got a hug, a picture and an autograph (or 2 or 4 or 5).  Some children asked for advice and Marianela answered with humility and encouragement.  She even took off her shoes and signed them for two young girls who were there (and went back to her room to get another for a third girl who was there).  The whole experience was unforgettable and so very heart-warming; one of the true stars of our age giving so selflessly of her time and enthusiasm.

Left just after 2330 (work night...) with no sign of Vadim (so I'll have to do it again another time)!

My daughter was one of the lucky girls to be given the pointe shoes from her feet and meeting her is something she will never forget and so inspirational for her as a young dancer. Such a shame Vadim didn’t make it out and we’ll have to return another time 😉

  4. Current year 9 has 8 or 9 boys, 2 of which are day pupils. It is very much done on what beds they have though, not how many in particular year groups, and the boys house is full at present. The current year 10 has 9 boys who will probably be moving out of the ‘boys’ house and so will free up those beds for whichever boys they take. Sometimes the year 7 boys are in with the year 7 girls in a different house if it’s a small year group. Basically, it’s anyone’s guess!! 😂

For any parents hanging out while auditions are taking place. Really recommend Jack and Alice's just at the bottom of the drive.

Yes, we were there yesterday and agree with this! Makes a nice change from the many Costas I sit in!

Dd very much enjoyed herself, even if the ‘presentation’ and tour was a little chaotic.

  6. It’s unlikely that any young person will have only one career in their lifetime these days, most will have at least three I think the research says. Ballet, as a dancer, may be limited but I imagine most professional dancers who want to, stay in the ballet world in some way in a range of different careers. Our dc are going to be working for a very long time. I’m giving mine the chance to do something they adore and are passionate about, for at least part of their life.

Dancia sell the So Danca SD16. Another excellent shoe but does not come in older  teen sizes, so DS swapped to Capezio Hanami. The material in the So Dancas wears better, so the shoes may last longer. So Dancas not available in flesh colour, which DS prefers, so choice is black or white for boys.

DS wears so danca SD16 and he’s size 10 so they go fairly large!

Well you put me to shame.... don’t think I’ve ever been so thoughtful - hats off to you MrsMoo!

suspect a few of us are now seeing how we can copy this one...

nutcracker tickets in the teeth of a nutcracker doll perhaps? Hee hee!

I did this for my dd last year, nutcracker doll had the tickets tied on a ribbon around his neck.

Is there a similar thread for narrow feet? I'm fine finding flats which work but I'm struggling with demi-pointe - Bloch A width are too wide.

Freed are the only ones that fit my dd’s narrow feet, everything else is far too wide.

I think you make some good points for discussion Fred, however another thought is that several more schools come into play at 16+.  Not everyone in the three lower schools actually wants to continue up into their Upper School/6th form.  Some would prefer to move to schools that don't have a lower school - ENB, Rambert, Central, Laines, Birds etc. so it dilutes the mix. (This list is only as illustration there will be other names that should be included).

However I would have thought that the vast majority of white lodge pupils would audition for US and not many would turn it down if offered?
