  1. Masters of ballet have just announced the dates for their Easter and Summer Schools in 2017.

Elena Glurjidze (former ENB Principal) and Olga Semenova (Director of Russian Imperial Ballet School) are the Artistic Directors and both courses will once again be at Sadlers Wells.

The guest teachers include Elena Glurjidze and other industry professionals and I've heard only fantastic things about these courses, so I thought it worth sharing the link below!

  2. So if the DaDa's usually cover pupils for Dance, Drama and Musical Theatre courses, presumably the school will have to now offer scholarships for each 6th Form course? There's surely no way the school could come close to covering the number of DaDa's that would normally be allocated.

Also, is this situation just for 2017 entry or does the school reapplying in 'the next round' mean in 3 years time I wonder?

  3. The interesting thing about Mathew Wyon's research is that it's heavily preventative rather than dealing with injuries when they arise. It also highlights the fact that preventative training could be vastly improved at vocational schools and within ballet companies.

At my Dd's vocational school there is no physiotherapy session unless pupils are injured. They do have a Pilates class which goes a little way towards addressing this hole in the curriculum, but no specific education in protecting their bodies against the rigours of training/rehearsing and performing.

  4. PS   What does 10MB mean in photo terms?

How big should the image be to conform with this requirement? Thanks

If you have Photoshop you can reduce the original size of the cropped image by clicking on 'image' in the top bar, then 'resize', then 'resize image'. It will bring up a window with the megapixels in the top rectangle (with the MB size above it). Try halving the image size until your image is less than 1MB (ideally between 500kb and 900kb). Then save the image.

I take a lot of photos for applicants in my studio and the most awkward site seems to be Laines. The photos must be resized or you keep getting 'error'. Anyone using a professional photographer should ask them to provide them with a high res image of each shot and also an image suitable for upload which is resized to around 800kb.

  5. I don't know if anyone has any experience of this either with their DC or pupils, but since growing during puberty, my DD who is 14, is having difficulty flattening her shoulder blades and back when her arms are down in bras bas. Once they are moving into first, second, or fifth they flatten out, but when her arms are down they are sticking out of her back.

Is this something that might improve when the thoracic spine grows, is it weakness in the lats, or a genetic problem that can't be improved? Any advice would be great!

  6. I don't think anyone's mentioned this one before, but we stumbled upon this short dance course on FaceBook.

I've signed DD up as its three days and two nights residential and the teachers look great! It's actually up near Nottingham, but as that's pretty accessible for many of us I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Shannon and Peter Parker are teaching ballet, Lukas Macfarlane is teaching contemporary and then there are other classes such as tap over the three days. It's the first year that they've run it (I think this organisation usually organise Festivals) but it looks like a great one for part of half term. A friend of mine knows the organisers and says they have a very good reputation.

Here's a link to contact them for anyone wanting more info:

  7. My Dd was in group C and one of the ones taken to try the contemporary with the older ones, but I think it was just to try them out, not necessarily as part of their casting. I guess at group C stage most will have only done limited contemporary (including my Dd) and may have to wait until they're 15/16 and above to be included in a contemporary number.

  8. I can only comment on my DS at Tring . Achieved 9 great GCSE's and 2 AS levels . Hoping for two good A levels . His friend achieved straight A grades and is on track for 3 A grades at A level .

    Great teachers and teaching .

The dance training speaks for itself - with students gaining upper school places at Royal and ENB most years .

My Dd is also at Tring and we are really pleased with the academic teaching. The GCSE and A' Level results the past two years were a few percentages up on my Son's (non dance) academically selective private school.
