Looking around at ENBS/RBS finals this year it certainly felt you need to be pretty tall ideally, long legs, flexible and, I would say, very very thin. DD's view is body shape, feet and height count for a lot more than natural dancer quality/musicality or stage presence when it comes to US auditions.

I viewed a First Year US class at RBS before Easter, it was part of the pupils B Tech assessments, using both contemporary and classical dance that they had choreographed in small groups.  The pupils were a range of heights and body shapes.  Not particularly leggy or skinny which did pleasantly surprise me.  They were all immaculate dancers technically, especially in the contemporary that we saw the most of and all had a lovely stage presence.

I would encouranpge everyone not to put too much store by rumours of height and weight requirements and just go in there and go for it.  You might just have what they're looking for despite being 5'1" or 5'9"

  2. But the point is that it's in NO WAY a lottery. There is immense skill & knowledge required to select the groups of students so that, as others have said, the classes are of children with the requisite ability. Do you not want people who've worked all their lives in a pretty underpaid profession to be paid properly?

Would your thoughts might e different if your child had received an acceptance? Would THAT be a lottery? I doubt it - it would be a recognition of their level of ability for the summer school.

After all, no-one is forcing you to send in an application ...

Let's stop down grading the real skills, knowledge, and qualifications of arts and teaching professionals!

Katy-N photos do not show ability and skill they show body type primarily, limb length and strength of turnout at most. If they wanted to judge on ability they'd ask for videos as POB and Masters of Ballet require.

  4. A friend of mine has a DD aged 11 who is extremely talented but who doesn't want to audition for full time vocational training until 15/16.

They are looking for a private ballet teacher in the Oxfordshire area with a very good reputation for lessons outside of her dance school RAD classes.

Does anyone know of someone they could suggest?

  6. Masters of Ballet at Sadlers Wells is a great Summer School with amazing teachers from English National Ballet and ENB School, such as the legendary Irek Mukhamedov OBE (an absolutely fabulous opportunity for DS's).

This is their list for this Summer: their website is www.mastersofballet.org

I think you have to send them a short video of some class exercises or a solo.

  7. The Director of Dance was not present at Tring US auditions this year but we were told this was due to personal reasons, not a recruitment drive at a major competition!. We felt very safe in the hands of the deputy who is also Head of Ballet.

The Director of Dance not being present this year at that audition was a one off, due to personal circumstances. She is otherwise always there :)

  8. My little issue is that my DD turns 15 just 13 days before the start date of this SS.

Having taken her IF this summer the lower group would not challenge her but then her age would send her into the older age group, however she is now Interm and Adv Found. Not studying Adv1 like the requirements as stated by ENBS. So stuck in the middle of 'no mans land' just like so many other SS.

Just don't know what to do for the best and obviously mindful of the additional costs relating to accommodation, meals incl packed lunches.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you

Balletbean, my DD did ENBS SS last Summer. She was 14 and had just taken RAD Intermediate and is at full time vocational school.

She was put into the group up to and including 14 years, which is then split into two groups based on age and photos. This group was extremely challenging and most of the girls were 14 and looked older. They day is long and the classes were full on and the repertoire more than hard enough, including the pointe work. The thought of going up to the next level (should she get in) is quite daunting, even though she's studying Advanced 1.

    Hope this helps!

  9. Balletbean, I also spoke to Olga about the video application and she said she was flying out to Hong Kong to teach this week and would consider early videos during the Christmas Holidays. They don't expect to receive many before the New Year as most people don't do their applications until then.

They run fantastic courses with pupils from ENB School and RBS attending, but they do not run a full time office so correspondence will only be viewed once or twice a week at this time of year. I'd contact Olga again at the end of term when she's back from Hong Kong.

  10. I think the best solution for anyone with a DC who's interested, would be to ask their ballet teacher if they would mind the recording being done during their usual class (the child in question would have to be in a position whereby other children in the class weren't in the video). Most ballet classes will be covering all of these exercises during a class anyway.

Alternatively you could film it against a blank wall at home in a room with a laminate/wood/Lino floor using a sturdy chair instead of a barre. It's the standard of execution that they'll be appraising rather than your filming or location :) Any ballet music from iTunes could be used, or the RAD/ISTD music from you tube videos.

I filmed my DDs application video for Paris Opera on my iPad and then downloaded the iMovie app to put the exercises together into one film. You can then upload the video to YouTube if you have an account. The link can then be sent to Masters of Ballet.

  11. As the application is supported by a video I would imagine that there is a 'grey' area for those children that lie in between and Masters of Ballet will make a final decision based on the work shown in the video. Paris Opera Ballet make their final grouping decision based on the video application too.

Hopefully you'll get a reply from them in the next few days and can clarify the situation.

I know a few DC who did the Summer Course last year (and all felt they had gained hugely from it) and were all placed in groups that they were very happy in. We didn't know about it but will definitely be applying this time around :)
