Emeralds
It was a hoot when I first discovered the existence of Fairytale of New York (apparently it is the most popular pop song at Christmas in the UK). Amidst a lot of the saccharine (impossibly unreal stereotypes of "perfect Christmases") or the commercialised (the media exhorting you to spend and spend) in entertainment at Christmas, Kirsty MacColl and Shane MacGowan's performance of this irreverent and gritty song by MacGowan and bandmate Jem Finer was the refreshing antidote to all that. Very sad to hear of Kirsty's untimely death in an accident in 2000, and now Shane's passing. May they rest in peace.
