Two Cigarettes in the Dark (1985) looks at the monotony of life, whilst in Vollmond (Full Moon) from 2006, which was featured in Wim Wenders’ film Pina, Bausch creates a unique world for the dancers on stage. The striking visuals of Bausch’s productions are ever-present in these works, with long-time collaborators Peter Pabst and Marion Cito’s breathtaking sets and costumes. Pina Bausch was born in Solingen in 1940. She received her dance training at the Folkwang School in Essen under Kurt Jooss, where she achieved technical excellence. Soon after the director of Wuppertal’s theatres Arno Wüstenhöfer engaged her as choreographer, from autumn 1973 she renamed the ensemble Tanztheater Wuppertal. Bausch’s initially controversial fusion of radical theatre, surreal art, drama and danced body language, gradually achieved international recognition for the company. Her original approach to theatre and dance influenced the international development of dance and inspired not only a generation of choreographers, but also theatre makers, visual artists and filmmakers. Awarded some of the greatest prizes and honours world-wide, Pina Bausch is one of the most significant choreographers of our time. The company, now under the artistic directorship of Dominique Mercy and Robert Sturm, celebrates its 40th anniversary in its 2013/ 2014 season.
