Inspired by the works of the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin, award-winning choreographer Russell Maliphant’s latest work The Rodin Project, returns to Sadler’s Wells for its first full run from Monday 29 October - Wednesday 31 October.

 

For The Rodin Project, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant, has worked with a diverse mix of talented performers using influences from dance forms such as popping, breaking and contemporary dance alongside his own choreographic language of flow, form and dynamics.

, who has previously worked with Michael Clark and Rambert as well as the designing costumes for international tours by Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears.

 

The Rodin Project is made in collaboration with lighting designer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Hulls, who Maliphant has worked with for over 20 years and features dancers, Tommy Franzen, Thomasin Gulgec, Dickson Mbi, Ella Mesma, Carys Staton and Jennifer White. The work is set to a newly commissioned score by Russian composer Alexander Zekke, who was the only person to compose music especially for the recent 2009 Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch production …Como el Musguito en la piedra, ay si, si, si.

 

Russell Maliphant trained at The Royal Ballet School and graduated into Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet before leaving to pursue a career in independent dance. He danced with DV8, Michael Clark, Rosemary Butcher and Laurie Booth.

He formed his Company in 1996. In 2002 he received he Time Out Live award for outstanding collaboration for his work Sheer, and in 2003 a South Bank Show award for Choice. He worked with Sylvie Guillem and Balletboyz on Broken Fall, which was nominated for an Olivier award for best new dance production, it was later restaged in 2004 as part of Rise and Fall, and won the Critics’ Circle award for best modern choreography. In 2005 Sylvie Guillem invited Russell to create PUSH which won a South Bank Show and Olivier award. He worked with visual artist Isaac Julien on Cast No Shadow and again with Sylvie Guillem and theatre director Robert Lepage on Eonnagata.

In 2009 Russell created Part One of AfterLight, a solo inspired by Nijinsky, which received the Critics’ Circle award for best modern choreography and was nominated for an Olivier award. AfterLight Parts Two and Three followed and the work is touring as a full evening together.

Russell became an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells in 2005.
