“A grave beauty” The Guardian on OCD Love

Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sharon Eyal and her co-creator Gai Behar present the UK premiere of their company L-E-V’s latest work, Love Chapter 2 on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 July, the company’s first reappearance since its Sadler’s Wells Debut in 2016.

OCD Love, with its focus on the heart through the lens of obsessive-compulsive disorder, elicited critical and audience praise alike. Co-produced by Sadler’s Wells, Love Chapter 2 builds on those themes with an even darker take on loneliness, despair and the search for connection, in Eyal and Behar’s trademark club-like atmosphere, enhanced with a score by music collaborator Ori Lichtik.

L-E-V launched in 2013 with a pledge to move and engage a diverse spectrum of new audiences and join together movement, music, lighting, fashion, art and technology. The work could equally be seen at a techno club or at an opera house.

Eyal was born in Jerusalem and danced with the Batsheva Dance Company from 1990 until 2008. She served as Associate Artistic Director from 2003 - 2004 and House Choreographer of the company from 2005 - 2012.

Behar initially started as an events producer and was a leading part in the Tel Aviv nightlife scene as well as a curator of multidisciplinary art events from 1999 until 2005.

Lichtik is a multifaceted musician, drummer and creative DJ and is one of the founding fathers of the techno scene in Israel. He has created and produced musical productions, techno raves and various other music and performance events since 1996.

Sadler’s Wells Artistic Director and Chief Executive Alistair Spalding said: “I’ve followed Sharon’s work for a number of years now and seen it develop in an extraordinary way, culminating in her debut here, with OCD Love in 2016. In my view she’s one of the most original choreographic voices today and her work with Gai Behar and their company L-E-V is thrilling to watch. I am delighted to present Love Chapter 2, which builds on the themes of OCD Love and takes their ideas even further.

Love Chapter 2 is the third of four presentations of Eyal’s work at Sadler’s Wells in 2018 following Bill, a piece for Ballet British Columbia’s evening in March and the world premiere of her work as Guest Artistic Director of NYDC Used To Be Blonde at Easter, and ahead of Killer Pig for Rambert 2 in November.

About Sadler’s Wells

Sadler's Wells is a world-leading creative organisation dedicated to dance in all its forms. With over three centuries of theatrical heritage and a year-round programme of performances and learning activities, it is the place where artists come together to create dance, and where people of all backgrounds come to experience it – to take part, learn, experiment and be inspired.

Audiences of over half a million come to its London theatres each year, with many more enjoying its touring productions at venues across the UK and around the world, and accessing its content through digital channels.

Sadler's Wells commissions, produces and presents more new dance work than any other theatre in the world, embracing the popular and the unknown. Since 2005, it has helped to bring over 160 new dance works to the stage, many of them involving its 16 Associate Artists, three Resident Companies and four Associate Companies – the most exciting talents working in dance today.

It also nurtures the next generation of talent through research and development, running the National Youth Dance Company and a range of programmes including Wild Card, New Wave Associates, Open Art Surgery and Summer University. Sadler's Wells' learning and engagement activities reach over 25,000 annually through programmes that take dance out into the community and invite communities into the theatre. Projects include community productions and the renowned Company of Elders, its resident over-60s performance group, while events range from pre and post-show talks with dance artists to classes, workshops and assisted performances.

Located in Islington, north London, the current building is the sixth to have stood on site since entrepreneur Richard Sadler first established the theatre in 1683. The venue has played an illustrious role in the history of theatre ever since, with The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and English National Opera having all started at Sadler's Wells.
