  2. May I ask the UK based members if there was any discussion of Carlos Acosta's race when he first started dancing? I ask because it seems that Misty Copeland has really promoted her race and has spun lots of stories and promotional campaigns from it.

I assume that there was not very much talk about it, but thought to ask.

Also, just in thinking about past British Dancers, I was surprised also that noone has mentioned Wayne Sleep, as he seemed to be on television also very often, as a proponent of overcoming the views of shorter dancers, and of course being a world record holder for Entre Chats.

wasn't Josè Carreno in UK before Acosta?

I saw Carreno dancing several times in Italy (with La Scala and other companies) and I don't remember anybody mentioning his skin color. His dancing was more relevant than that, I suppose.

  3. I made the same comparison, Sim - this magnificent, passionate, fantastically imaginative work of dance/theatre, compared to the sterile, inward-looking, self-conscious tosh at the ROH last week. Not just a difference of style but of substance.

In Manchester I asked Tamara Rojo why they scheduled so few shows in London and she replied: "We couldn't run the risk to have more shows: we weren't sure of how it would have been received"

To have to be sure to produce something of value to survive having no money to waste, probably stimulates thinking and evaluation, and care and attention in the creative process. A leader as Rojo and a choreographer a Khan also help of course.

  4. If you have a friend or a child crazy for ballet, consider bidding for Alina Cojocaru's signed point shoes: the auction is open until 01DEC on BalletNews and includes also 4 ENB Nutcracker tickets.

The shoes will be consigned to the "winner" personally by Alina.

Here the page and the link to send your bid

The auction is in favor of Hospice of Hope and its project in Copaceni, Romania.

    http://www.hospicesofhope.co.uk/campaign-for-copaceni/

As already reported in Afternoon Tea event post, Alina has supported Hospice of Hope over the years, especially with successful ballet galas: the funds raised at those events helped to build the Hospice Casa Sperantei in Bucharest, as it can be seen in this video

  5. On The 20th of November (15:00-17:00), Alina Cojocaru invites you for an afternoon tea at the Millenium Hotel Mayfair.

In this charity event, she will talk of her life as a ballerina.

What a great Christmas present, just a little bit in advance, can this be for a ballet lover and for those thinking to donate to a charity organization at Christmas time!

The event has been organized by Hospice of Hope and will raise fund in support of a new hospice in the nearby of Bucharest, Romania.

Alina has been supporting Hospice of Hope for several years, organizing ballet galas in London: the funds raised gave an great help in building Hospice Casa Sperantei  in Bucharest.

Here a video with Alina filmed by Johan Kobborg visiting the building site and patients and the final result

  6. As I said earlier up the thread it took me 3 viewings to notice several moves that enhanced the story. I am fortunate that I was able to see it 3 times, most people don't have that luxury.

You were also fortunate to see James Streeter as Albrecht: he enhances the story more than the 3 viewings, IMO.

Streeter is my reason to fly to Southampton: I want to see Cojocaru dancing with him.

Both Cojocaru and Rojo are wonderful, very different of course and even more interesting for this reason.

The same can be said for Corrales and Chacon.

  7. Re Giselle death: at a second view and from the circle, it's evident that when she lies behind the Landlord and between the two attendants, Hilarion is called to do the dirty job. Obviously they don't want the rebel and her bastard around.

Another interesting point: when Giselle and Albrecht are Alne for the first time, he mimes the hat but she has already moved to another direction and doesn't notice it. So he tried to tell her, but too blandly

  8. Thanks for this heads up Naomi M - I certainly hadn't seen it coming. I'm assuming this is the 2015 Gala with our Melissa dancing the Manon Act 1, Scene 2 pas de deux with Claudio Coviello and have been looking for reviews with little success. I can't remember any comment on the forum - can I ask please if anyone was there or has any advice to offer? Would it be a worthwhile buy?

    In my opinion, no.

I think Manon pdd was particularly bad (but not the worst), in a modest gala overall. I think there are some clips of the gala on youtube: maybe you can try to check there if it's the case to buy it for your collection.

  9. Rather following the trend of other companies, only two new graduates are joining the company - plus Rina Kanehara following her Prix de Lausanne apprenticeship.

    Congratulations to everyone.

Francesca Velicu (18) is a new graduate too. She was already dancing with the company in Bucharest (she danced Kitri and Theme & Variations leading role), but as a student: she graduated from the ballet school just few weeks ago.

  10.

By the way, did I once see Marianela Nunez substitute something else for the fouettes, or am I confusing it with something else?

I really hope not! It would be just crazy.

As it was quite crazy to have Nunez dancing the solo parts in Dances at a Gathering in the show that resulted to be the last one of Alina Cojocaru for nearly a whole year: there were two shows that Saturday and probably there was not time to make a full cast change, so Alina danced the partnered parts and Nunez the solos.

  11. Marcia Haydée. Alessandra Ferri. Alina Cojocaru. How could you forget them???

I don't know, they are the 3 names popping out in my head when I hear "dance actress".

I would just add Silvia Azzoni and Tamara Rojo (when she want) among the contemporary dancers.

  12. Among the other things said: prime minister Dacian Ciolos writes and recommends to those who made such a bad performance at ONB to look at Bucharest handball team winning the Europa League. According to him they are the example to follow L. And the trainer is a Dane.

Yes, truth hurts and also blatant mediocrity and lack of reasons, poor Mola & C.

  13. Truth hurts. Sometimes is much better to admire an artist for his performance and not extend his artistry to his personality. I would say going public to this extend, JK has done too much harm to be welcomed to ONB. Trying to go even further using political intervention is absolutely outrageous. There are 52 ballet dancers from his department saying he is not wanted, what else to be said?

You know perfectly what else has to be said and ehas been said and you know perfectly who signed that fake press release (not present on ONB web site but published in the nationalistic xenophobic media already used by Soare and Iordachescu and in protesters own blog - linked here) and who didn't.

The level of the protests listed speaks clearly of the authors.

Btw, it seems that Act 1 Birbanto solo doesn't exists.

Here three Romanian ballet dancers interviewed today, they are among the 30 who signed in favour of Kobborg (30 other signed aganist- the rest of the oppositors is people waiting for a never coming retirement: the full list is on the xenophobic site, you know where to search)

I see that your level of information remains surprising low. Or maybe not surprising.
