You must live in a posh area, Alison. I have just booked two tickets at my local cinema. Judging by the seating plan, there are currently all of 6 people booked in.
We had a very good turn out here in Worthing and a very mixed audience so not a "posh" crowd. They left delighted with their evening.

Our Voices sounds very interesting indeed- I will make a point of seeing that.
I’m also delighted about Giselle!
I will probably book for Carmen as I’ve only ever seen it as an opera.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased!
I really rate Johan Inger. I remember him well from Basler Ballet. I am sure his Carmen will be well worth seeing.

My comments aren't related to the ROH but the provincial theatres that I usher at and yes we are fully briefed and all or Duty Managers are skilled in the specific training mentioned above sadly this doesn't solve every problem we encounter. Most of our audiences are fabulous.

this is so interesting! I guess it’s a smaller audience but it still relies on people being cooperative. Practically I can’t see this working at roh.Unfortunately checking in a phone call wouldn’t work - people do like to keep in touch at the intervals and it would cause ridiculous queues for retrievals.
In an ideal world it wouldn’t be necessary but I think the messaging on phones should be stronger.
maybe before the performance a video could be played around no loud food, no phones, no talking emphasising it is distracting for others and disrespectful. There is an independent cinema in London that plays this type of film pre the movie and it seems to be effective.
I also would support ushers receiving more training and support to ensure they can and do intervene, I appreciate it is not the easiest job but if standards aren’t enforced I fear things will only get worse.
And to all the Paddington hard-starers and shushers, I am with you!
What training would you suggest, we are all fully briefed and if they still persist the Duty Manager deals with it. Even they can sometimes have problems getting them to stop using the phone without creating a disturbing incident during a performance, particularly if the culprit is mid row. We honestly do try!

I think this would overcomplicate things - a simple “no photos during the performance” covers it. (Which I think is what they do say anyway?)If you really wanted to you could have signs about the building that would inform people like an faq and images - someone with a finger over their mouth to indicate no talking, they already have icons outside the doors with crossed out circles of food/drink but they are almost too small and tasteful perhaps!
From my experience as an usher I am not sure those who are not respectful of theatre etiquette would take any notice of them at all.

Katherine Healy joined ENB as a ?principal aged 15 in 1984. I think Trinidad Sevillano was also a ‘baby ballerina’.
Yes both very young and referred to as "baby ballerinas"

You wonder why the feed was OK to some cinemas and not others.

It was fabulous, but did your cinema feed have a bit of a glitch in the matrix as well?
No it was all good and much appreciated by the audience

From RB: more Ashton. Sylvia. Some of MacMillan’s more classical pieces that haven’t been performed as often lately, eg Solitaire, Danses Concertantes. Any original de Valois ballets like Checkmate or The Rake’s Progress.
From BRB: some of their Balanchine and Cranko ballets that other British companies don’t have in their repertory, eg Mozartiana, Pineapple Poll. And Bintley’s Flowers of the Forest, Galanteries.
From ENB: Christopher Bruce’s Swansong. Their production of Coppelia by Ronald Hynd. Suite en Blanc. La Sylphide. Mary Skeaping’s Giselle.
Any company: Antony Tudor’s Dark Elegies. Fokine’s Les Sylphides
Any theatre/impresario: To bring National Ballet of Canada back after Covid cancelled their ROH visit. Australian Ballet, NYCB, ABT and Royal Danish Ballet to visit again! United Ukrainian Ballet to come for another visit.
Rambert used to do Dark Elegies, loved it.

I do voluntary part-time work as an usher in a certain medium size concert hall in London and I would say that taking photos by the audience is one of our major problems. The thing is with it anything can be done about it it’s often a matter of where the person is sitting. If they’re in the middle of a row towards the front of the auditorium it’s very difficult to get them to stop filming while the performance is going on, without causing disruption.
I also do voluntary work in theatres and agree it's so difficult to gain their attention and get them to stop. Some people can be quite abusive when you ask them to stop using their phone. Be assured we do try and do our best in our theatres here.

The list of successful candidates has been published. Sadly although there were 6 applications, no candidates have been selected from from UK.
Impressive number of candidates selected from Ballettschule Theater Basel

Thankyou! Will pass it on to my "Anglophile" DS.
I think most schools will carefully consider 18+ boys for training. Good Luck to him.

In the UK both Central and Rambert are excellent

I'm pretty sure this didn't happen in the 80's, I do realise this was a long time ago.

Please feel free to move to whichever forum you think best
I have 15 assorted hard back books about ballet free to a good home but would need to be collected from South Sussex. If you message me I can give more details, just didn't want them to go to the tip as a bookseller doesn't want them and the local charity shops don't take hardback at the moment.

I am surprised you were given a reason for not being offered White Lodge, is this a change in policy as they never used to give reasons.

@BallerinamamaWhilst the RBS does seem extremely preoccupied with flat turn-out (my pupil is a couple of degrees off and I was told this was why she wasn’t offered White Lodge finals) she was offered MAs in the first round of offers, and her box splits are good, but not flat. In fact she said hers were the “worst” in the room except for the boys, yet only four girls in her MA class received offers from RBS (two for WL and two for MAs) so it can’t be a deal-breaker.

Yes you are correct, Ballet Boost simply rent studio space, as do several other enterprises. Rambert School have their own Pre Vocational scheme which runs every Saturday.
Thank you

A friend of mine has a son who has been accepted on this, she was under the impression it is run by Rambert. I hope I am correct in thinking that they just use their premises. She is anxious for him to be dancing with more boys. He is 12, does anyone know how many boys there would be in this age group. Has anyone current experience that they would be willing to share. Many thanks
