I'd never thought I'd see this Mayerling version on a screen.

Likewise!  I was fortunate enough to be at this performance (I thought at the time that my "Bravos" were quite loud, but could not hear them on the recording, perhaps because I was near the front of the stalls), and was thrilled to be able to revisit it.  A huge "DANKE" to Stuttgart for making it available, and to Angela for pointing it out.

(Yet?) Florida has been getting all incomers from abroad to self-isolate for 14 days, hasn't it, or am I getting confused?  One would assume there was a good reason for it.

Alison, I think those guidelines were revised a few days ago:  https://www.wesh.com/article/florida-coronavirus-self-isolate-after-international-travel/31286388#

Of course now, anyone entering the US who's been in a Schengen country in the last 14 days is required by Federal regulation to self-isolate.

In my view a phenomenal performance from the whole cast last night. Seems wrong to pick out Nunez/Bolle but their chemistry and dancing was electric. I saw them do this same ballet in Milan last autumn, so was so excited to get another chance to see them - and as Roberto Bolle said on Instagram that he got to play Onegin one more time, I am assuming this was the last performance in these roles for these 2 as a partnership.

FYI, they are scheduled to dance Onegin with La Scala in California this summer.

In the past she danced Marguerite & Armand with Robert Enache in Bucharest and with Friedemann Vogel in New York (in one of her ballet galas in favour of Hospice of Hope): I'd love so much to see her again with Vogel, probably one of her very best partners after Johan Kobborg's golden era (I cannot forget their wonderful performances of Derek Deane Romeo and Juliet!)

I was unable to attend that New York gala, but I believe that she and Friedemann danced only excerpts from M&A that evening.  They danced the entire work (wonderfully) with Sarasota Ballet in New York in the 2016 Fall for Dance festival.

They also danced the MacMillan Romeo & Juliet on tour with La Scala Ballet in Tokyo in 2013, IIRC.

I agree wholeheatedly with your assessment of their partnership.

  5. I am traveling and don’t have my notes with me, but I believe I saw Storm-Jensen do Lilac once in the last run and 4 or 5 times this season, and each time, her variation was far from well -executed. Lilac Fairy requires more than a statuesque build and a pretty face. In a company with the depth of talent the RB currently possesses, I find it incomprehensible that a dancer who cannot execute the choreography is continually cast in the role.

  6. Yes, Muntagirov is scheduled for the 22nd. BUT it looks extremely unlikely: the current version of the rolling warning of possible cancellations issued by the Opera runs through that date, and they’ve stopped selling tickets for the performance.

I had originally booked for 6 & 19 December, but when I read about the forthcoming “unlimited” strike to begin on 5 December,  I switched my first ticket from the 6th to the 3rd, and am very glad to have done so! I feel very lucky to have been able to see that performance.

  7. I think there's been some confusion here, to which I did not intend to contribute.  I don't believe Friedemann Vogel was ever listed for the London gala; the list in my earlier post is from the FB page of Daniele Cipriani, the producer of the Etoiles gala in ROME.  Here's the cast list for the ROME gala as shown on the ROME theatre's website (https://en.auditorium.com/evento/les_etoiles-20147.html😞😞

    Elisa Badenes (Balletto di Stoccarda)
Sergio Bernal (Balletto Nazionale di Spagna)
Young Gyu Choi (Dutch National Ballet)
Aurélie Dupont (Opéra di Parigi) 25-26 gen
Robert Fairchild (già New York City Ballet)
Vadim Muntagirov (The Royal Ballet di Londra)
Marianela Nuñez (The Royal Ballet di Londra)
Yanela Piñera  (Queensland Ballet di Brisbane)
Denis Rodkin (Teatro Bolshoi di Mosca)
Luis Valle (Balletto dell'Opera di Nizza)
    Friedemann Vogel (Balletto di Stoccarda)
    ed altre stelle dal mondo

As I said earlier, I've seen a description of the Rome gala listing Novikova (plus Sarafanov, Alexandrova and Lantratov) that turns up on Internet searches that I believe describes the last gala (i.e., in January 2019).

  8. Don Q Fan, where did you see Novikova listed for the 2020 Rome gala?  I have seen a listing for the 2019 gala floating around the Internet, which includes her name, but here's the 2020 roster from the producer's Facebook page:

    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - MARIANELA NUNEZ | Royal Ballet di Londra
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - FRIEDEMANN VOGEL | Stuttgart Ballet
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - ELISA BADENES | Stuttgart Ballet
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - YANELA PINERA | Queensland Ballet
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - VADIM MUNTAGIROV | Royal Ballet
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - LUIS VALLE | Opéra de Nice
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - SERGIO BERNAL ALONSO | Ballet Nacional de España
    25 e 26 gennaio - AURELIE DUPONT | Opéra de Paris
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - DENIS RODKIN | Teatro Bolshoi di Mosca
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - ELEONORA SEVENARD | Teatro Bolshoi di Mosca
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - ROBERT FAIRCHILD | già New York City Ballet
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - YOUNG GYU CHOI | Dutch National Ballet
    24 - 25 - 26 gennaio - OLEG IVENKO | Compagnia di Stato di Opera e Balletto di Kazan

As for Ballet Icons, while the list may look similar to the list for the last gala, that actual performance featured very few of the dancers originally promised.  I hope the audience has better luck in January.

  9. I saw nearly the original NYCB cast of DAAG (everyone except for Jonathan Prinz) several times, and then over the years with some additional changes but several of the core dancers remaining, and always loved it.  As I did some subsequent performances with wonders like the young Gelsey Kirkland.  And I saw nearly the original RB cast (everyone except, I think, for Jonathan Kelly), and time stood still.  What a glorious performance!  If I could magically go back in time and see again only five of the thousands of performances I've seen, that would be one of them.  So I greatly anticipated the RB's revival, but I found the two performances I saw in the first cycle disappointing and flat.  (To be fair, I've seen many other DAAG performances by other companies, including NYCB, in the last two decades or so that featured individual performances of brilliance, but were in their entirety unsatisfying.)

I had been planning to skip the Marston/Scarlett program.  There are a number of RB dancers, though, that I'd love to see in DAAG, and I suspect many of them will be cast, although not necessarily in the roles I would choose for them.  (Casting may well be subject to the wishes of the Robbins Trust stagers.)  So I think I will wait until casting is announced, and then if scheduling works and decent tickets are available, give it another chance.

  10. I travel independently to Moscow several times a year, and do not find it difficult.  My Russian speaking is quite limited, but I do read Cyrillic.

The Bolshoi Theatre puts tickets on sale roughly 3 months before the performance.  Under the system initiated last season to solve the scalping problem, buyers purchasing during the first two weeks the performance is on sale are required to submit passport details, and a certificate, rather than the ticket itself, is issued, which must then be exchanged by the purchaser, who is asked to present passport and credit card, at one of the theatre's box offices, for the ticket.  It's an extra step, but not very cumbersome.

And Esmeralda .... I saw that  at StaatsBallett Berlin which was the Bolshoi version and I really enjoyed it, real live goats and all👍

DQF, if I recall correctly, the Esmeralda performed by the Staatsballett Berlin was an abridged, 2-act version of the Bolshoi's 3-act version.  Both productions were the work of Yuri Burlaka and Vasily Medvedev.

Esmeralda has been out of the Bolshoi rep since Burlaka's tenure, and I fear that it will not be performed there again in my lifetime.

It was more the point that Macaulay would make a statement in this manner (the implication being that the RB is doing something very different from NYCB and, therefore, bad) but not then finish up with the actual facts when known (particularly when they rather blow his point out of the water).

And for that very reason, I would NOT expect him to include “the actual facts.”
