Well reality is Watson, McRae, Soares are coming up for retire in next few years as will Cut, Nunez, Lamb on female side. It is as it always is though. You need one eye on future. Great signing.

I don't know what timeframe you have in mind with "next few years" but I, for one, would hope that (barring injury or the unforeseen) Nunez does NOT retire ANYTIME within what I understand them to be.

Of course, any good director should plan for the future in making staffing decisions, which I think is O'Hare is doing well.

I must be drawing a blank, but who is "Cut"?

When did Osipova dance Olga?  (At least, I'm assuming she wasn't displaying the wilfulness while dancing Tatiana)

Your assumption is correct!  Osipova danced Olga in June 2012 during ABT's Met summer season.  (If I recall correctly, she was originally scheduled for two performances, but only danced the first.)  Diana Vishneva was the Tatiana, and speaking of Vishneva's Tatiana, her ABT farewell performance in the role, partnered by Marcelo Gomes, was absolutely shattering.

Vogel was superb, Badenes was superb, I'll keep my opinion about Amatriain to myself, but there are lots of people who admire her in the role.  Stuttgart still has so many small details you don't see anywhere else. Adam Cooper couldn't dance it technically, but he blew me away, I saw things like never before and never again. Wow, he was great.

I did not see the performances that were filmed, but I saw the same cast the previous weekend, and I agree with Angela's comments about them, as well as that Adam Cooper was a great Onegin.

I've been watching Onegin since 1971, and have seen many wonderful Tatianas, and a few great Onegins, in a number of companies.  Haydee remains for me the greatest, and though I think she perhaps took greater risks, at least in the mirror pas, with Richard Cragun (I have never seen that level of rapturous abandon elsewhere, although I thought Cojocaru came close in one pre-injury performance with Kobborg), for me Heinz Claus' characterization felt truer.

Having said that, Maximova was a glorious Tatiana, and I loved Birgit Keil in the role (as I did in almost everything). I thought Rojo was a great Tatiana (and that dropping her on the following run was a heinous act), as was Ciaravola, and in more recent times Svetlana Lunkina.  I've been deeply moved by the Onegins of both Lantratov and Skvortsov at the Bolshoi, and by Evan McKie at NBoC (not having seen him in Stuttgart).

Besides Badenes, I'd single out Osipova and Tikhomirova in recent times as best achieving the wilfulness Olga should display, along with gorgeous dancing.

Egon Madsen left his mark on Lensky for me, but the dancing of both Heymann and Polunin in the role just blew me away.  I deeply regret never having seen Vogel's Lensky , as the video of his first act variation stuns me everytime I watch it.

In 2014, the last time the RB did Manon, I re-posted the interview I did with David Wall, creator of Lescaut, in 2005.  He has some interesting things to say about it, and also about Rudolf/Mayerling.  I am posting it again here, so that those who haven't read it can do so if they wish (or for those who have, you can re-read it if you like;  I just have after a long time!).  As well as being an amazing artist, David was a truly lovely man.  We always meant to do Part 2 of this interview, but sadly never got around to it.  I regret that to this day.  However, at least we have Part 1:

I'd really like to read this, but everytime I've clicked on the link, it says the Gmail account is temporarily unavailable!  I've tried 2 different browsers, to no .  Help!

  5. The Shrew, Nutcracker, Dame aux Camellias, and Giselle this season were always scheduled to be previously recorded, rather than live, cinecasts, and PatheLive 's original announcement was clear (see the original post above).  I can't speak to advertising in the UK; here in the US, there's a small asterisk on the US website indicating a recording of a former performance.  (But, following a change in the US distributor last season, even our so-called "live" cinecasts are all shown on a delay of at least 2 hours...)

I'm not sure that the number of female principals that the company has brought is important, in the Mariinsky most of the First Soloists have danced principal roles for many years. I'm not even sure that the title of principal dancer is reliable as a measure of quality to distinguish Principal dancer from First Soloist. There are many ballet watchers in St Petersburg who would argue that some of the First Soloists are more talented than the Principals, on both the male and female sides.

And not just ballet watchers in St Petersburg! (Of my 3 favorite Mariinsky ballerinas for the classics, only one is a Principal.)

Looking forward to tonight's Don Q, hope Renata Shakirova will be a pleasant surprise, really enjoyed the opening night although the production looked tired the dancing was glorious, Tereshkina and Kim produced the technique I had expected, her fouettes were truly outstanding, and she danced a more delicate solo in the vision scene.

Shakirova also dances the beautiful Dudinskaya vision scene variation.  Wish I could be there for it!

I vividly remember watching Paquita at the Garnier, my companion was seeing Thibault dance for the first time, he was so excited at what he saw, he nearly went over the parapet.  He is, unsurprisingly, a huge admirer of Lopatin too.

Thibault had an army of admirers, his first leading role was in Don Q., conveniently a matinee, that had fans from across Europe congregating in Paris for the event, Clement Crisp and John Percival were sitting together in the front row of the stalls.  The atmosphere was very special and the POB students chanted his name 'Manu!, Manu! at the curtain calls.  I had hoped that reception would have made the POB management reconsider his position within the company but it wasn't to be.  Apart from Don Q. his only other lead role was Colas in Ashton's Fille and unsurprisingly he was the best in the role I've ever seen.  I sincerely hope he gets an opportunity to pass on his skills to the next generation.

Ha, I remember sitting there at the Paquita premiere in something of a funk because Legris, who had initially been cast as Lucien, had been replaced, and then Thibault came out in the pas de trois and it was "Whoa, who IS that?"  I wasn't near the parapet, but I certainly sat up a whole lot straighter!

I was unable to see his Basilio (a source of regret), but I did see his wonderful Colas and Mercutio, as well as many other great performances in smaller roles.  He certainly never had the career his talent deserved, whether for emploi or other reasons.

  9. I got caught in a torrential downpour in St Petersburg last year; everything was drenched (I looked like I'd gone swimming in my clothes), including the contents of my bag, which included my Iphone.  It totally froze, so I couldn't even turn it off.  There was no Apple store in St Petersburg, and I did not want to risk an off-label repair, so I left it untouched (did not know the rice trick and no one I asked told me about it).  Eventually the battery wore down, and to my delight, I was able to turn it on again after 2-3 days.  I took it in to the Apple store when i got home to have them check it for me, and it was fine.  So good luck and don't give up hope!
