I heard that was really good-unfortunately didn’t have time to travel to Leeds to see it, and missed the 2019 ENO production due to a clash of dates too! Hopefully ENO will bring it back soon, as 2019 does feel quite a long time ago, when Tosca and La Boheme seem to be done annually nowadays! But I agree, the ballet doesn’t even get a look in at all. Perhaps if National Ballet of Canada’s new artistic director Hope Muir (who used to dance with ENB) is considering putting on the visit here which was postponed/cancelled by the pandemic, she might be persuaded to bring Merry Widow instead of Sleeping Beauty, which we can easily see from RB (this year), BRB (next year) and ENB (2018 and no doubt it will be back soon)!
I believe the production is already in their repertoire so that makes it very easy.

Here is a recent article from the New York Times about, among other things, Ratmansky’s reaction to the recent production:
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/25/arts/dance/alexei-ratmansky-mariinsky-pharaohs-daughter.html
This article is behind a paywall but that is usually not too difficult to deal with. The article is headed “The Star Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky on Russia’s Cultural War”.
Quite sad that some of the choreography and staging was stolen from him for this production, as he wasn’t able to complete his own production. I’m not surprised but disappointed.

Forgot about her Final, Final performance in Himeji (Japan) on Saturday 8th July.

Not sure that I’d call R&J harsh, Benjamin, but I do agree that Cinderella is magical and mysterious. And I’m now totally hooked on that magic and mystery.I don’t know if harsh is the right word but I don’t know what else I’d use.

Bit confused by that, but it’s not like they aren’t going to not do the production they spent millions on, they might just try to hide the name Liam Scarlett and just call it: Swan Lake.

Do you not think it is more ‘jazzy’ than R&J Benjamin?
Romeo and Juliet is more harsh and emotional. Cinderella, still harsh is more magical and mysterious.

Don Q 2019
17 performances
· Marianela Nuñez x 3
· Akane Takada x 3
· Lauren Cuthbertson x 2
· Fumi Kaneko x 3
· Yasmine Naghdi x 2
· Natalia Osipova x 2
· Mayara Magri x 2
Sounds about right, I wonder if Lauren will be back, if she won’t I’d give Osipova more shows, or Lamb, Hayward, O’Sullivan or Gasparini

I wonder how many Kitris there will be?
If anyone wants to do the math: Find other RB shows that have a similar amount of shows in a similar time period and then they could theoretically tell us how many Kitris there would be.

People often say that, but I don't think they are that similar. I'll have to have another look at the DVD when time permits.
Sorry they aren’t that similar, again my lack of re-reading sabotages me. But they do share some similarities.

@Dawnstar if you want a flavour of the 'old' Cinders, with Ashton / Helpmann, if you look on the Nina Timofeeva thread and follow the links to historic footage of Timofeeva on YT the same person who posted the historic footage on YT has obliged with three separate acts, four months ago. Sibley / Dowell. Slightly faded and all that but it's important these things are avaiable for posterity, critical comment, comparison and anyone with a scholarly interest.
(And yes the entire 2023 version has of course also been posted, but not by that person and I'm not giving any clues.)
Yep I’ve found it too, I will say no more.

I agree that Kitri wouldn't suit Hayward. But then (as another poster above said) I don't think Don Q suits the RB generally.
Agreed they more suit a British, French or even Russian Ballet. Not this fiery explosive style. They can still do it, and pretty well they can too.

I have seen his R&J a few times (Stuttgart Ballet brought it to London a few years ago) and I like it. Much of it is similar to MacMillan's. I think the latter drew on Cranko's and then expanded it (and added his gorgeous pdd). There is a story (maybe apocryphal) that Cranko took a friend to see MacMillan's R&J early on. The friend said to Cranko 'I liked it, but I also want to see yours.' 'You just have', replied Cranko. Ouch!
I’m glad that there’s (presumably) no bad blood but I wish Someone put Cranko as Original Choreographer in the credits for Macmillan’s or something, because I’ve seen both and they are very similar.

There's just been a really nice feature about BRB and the Black Sabbath Ballet on BBC Breakfast News. The news programmes are available on the iPlayer for 24 hours and the item started around 0845.
Black Sabbath the Ballet is also on at Plymouth Theatre Royal on 12-14 October and Sadler's Wells 18-21 October.
Yep BRB just posted about it on Instagram. 18 to 21 Oct, Sadlers Wells. Booking for BRB supporters opens on the 15th of May and general public on the 22nd.

The package also claimed that they hope to present it worldwide.
(Could that be why booking still hasn’t opened in Sunderland. The company has never replied to my request for a booking date.)
Interesting about worldwide, I assume they will book things in once they know that it’s a hit in the uk. I guess they will take it to New York?

Interesting news from the 2023/24 press release:
This is on top of wider digital innovation as we make available 24 more productions on ROH Stream. These will include work from Wayne McGregor, and Joseph Toonga's See Us, as well as The Royal Ballet’s new production of Cinderella. These will be supported by a raft of new behind-the-scenes films, interviews and performances, including a celebration of Antonio Pappano's tenure as Music Director of The Royal Opera; a host of choreographic and vocal masterclasses; and exclusive World Ballet Day content, with rehearsals and insights from across its rich ten-year history.

Am just catching up with the long ROH press release.
In the Cinema and stream section they unfortunately don't give out a complete list of cinema broadcasts but just say it is the largest season ever, with 13 broadcasts. Ballet wise they just mention Swan lake and Nutcracker which were obvious anyway. I'm keeping everything crossed that at least one Ashton performance is filmed for cinema and hopefully the other streamed. The gala would be good for cinema and hopefully get some publicity for Sarasota as well as Ashton.
Re streaming, it does say 24 more new productions will be added to the streaming offer. This is continuing the current 2 operas and ballets a month they currently do. I'm assuming that 'new' means new to streaming not necessarily new performances though it does specifically mention the new Cinderella will be a streaming offer at some point in the year though of course it has already been a cinema broadcast. Apparently the streaming will include works by Wayne Macgregor and Joseph Toonga (no comment!)
Looking forward to the 'commemorative displays of beautiful historical costumes including a celebration of the centenary of Nicholas Georgiadis who designed sumptuous costumes for Kenneth MacMillan ballets including Manon and Mayerling'.
Where is there an actual breakdown of days/dates of performances? People have commented on the few matinees, especially lack of Saturday Nutcracker matinees so it must be out there somewhere and I've just missed it. Matinees and linked performance days are so important when you're travelling long distances.

I think it’s safe the assume that all the money for new Main Stage Productions has gone to the Royal Opera.
New Das Rheingold
New Carmen
New Jephtah
New Elektra
And no new Main Stage work for the Royal Ballet.
Hopefully the tables turn the season after next.- 3
