  1. Although I wasn't at the Linbury performances so therefore did not see the programme, in other years the * beside the name usually indicates that the pupil had been an Associate. However, the information isn't always correct as my son was a JA, attended another vocational school and then the Upper School and there was never an * beside his name!

The asterisk (the *) was not taken from the list of graduates in the programme. On another thread somebody had asked which of the graduates had come to the Upper School from White Lodge. I responded by putting an asterisk by the names of those who had spent at least a year there.

  2. Re tempi - I remember spending two blissfully happy hours in the dance section of the New York Public Library on my first visit there in 1979 watching an American TV recording of Cinderella - Fonteyn, Somes and I must have the others written down somewhere

Would that be the NBC TV recording that was issued on VAI to celebrate the Ashton Centenary in 2004? If so, it was recorded in April 1957 and the Ugly Sisters were Ashton and MacMillan, the Jester was Alexander Grant, the Fairy Godmother was Julia Farron and the Seasons were Merle Park, Annette Page, Svetlana Beriosova and Elaine Fifield

Edited as some of the text mysteriously became gobbledygook and had to be corrected

  3. There is a long and detailed artiicle on Sergei Polunin in the latest issue (Sept / Oct 2012) of Intelligent Life magazine by Julie Kavanagh. This includes interviews with him and with members of his family and with staff at RBS and RB. I don't know if this will be available on line. (I'm sure the links team will locate it if it is). If not you may want to locate a print edition.

Sorry. Am editing this posting as I thought I'd found a link to the article but, despite September 2012 being at the top of the page, the article is clearly an old one! I'll leave the link in case anyone's interested in it.

  4. on a par I should imagine

Though I was hoping to get a Dancing Times over the summer, as there is an interview in there I was hoping to read (think its the August issue - or the one that comes out in August, not sure which). Anywhere recommended to find a copy?

The Dancing Times just informed me that, because of the temporary closure of the ROH shop, they're selling copies direct without charging postage.

    Here's their number: 020 7250 3006

  5. Last night the Floral Hall was being stripped of its fixtures and fittings before the audience had even left the building. A deep carpet in an unattractive puke-green colour has made an appearance in the amphi bar and corridor, not very good quality as bits were coming off all over it. Wonder who foots the bill for all this?

I asked an usher about the carpet. According to him it's just there for the Olympics and will be taken up again afterwards. I can't imagine why they would need a different carpet during the Olympic period.

  6. Bugaku - Balanchine's sensual Japanese ballet - certainly received more than one performance by the RB, as I well recall.

The ROH Collections database is clearly inaccurate then.....

    http://www.rohcollec...tion=6508&row=0

....as it only records one performance. I suppose that they must rely on the programmes they have in their collection and there are presumably some programmes missing.

    edited to add link

  7. OK. I've found some more:

Symphony in 3 movements only performed in 2001

Stars and stripes excerpt done in a gala in 2007- only one performance though (Alina Cojocaru and Steven McRae) so probably doesn't count as being in the rep.

    Liebeslieder Walzer – 5 performances in 1979

+ a ballet I’ve never heard of: "Bugaku" only performed once in 1988 so I don’t know if that can count as being in the rep!

Edit: Just realised that the question wasn't just about the Royal. Apart from a number of the ballets already mentioned, Concerto Barocco and Mozartiana are in the BRB rep. and Who Cares? is in the ENB rep.

I'm sure people more knowledgeable than I about these two (and other UK) companies can add more.

  8. Yes, RB have The Four Temperaments in their rep but I think that completes the Balanchine rep there.

.........there are a few more that I, personally, have seen them do in the last 10 years.

    Ballet Imperial

    Theme and Variations

    Duo concertant

    Tzigane

    Stravinsky violin concerto

    Tchaikovsky pas de deux

I've a feeling there are more. I'll have a look in the performance database.....

  9. I've just realised that we've only been given two names for each of the Apollo performances in Period 2. If my memory serves me correctly, at his recent Ballet Association talk, Kevin O'Hare made a point of saying he believed in announcing detailed casting in advance.

I thought I remembered that all three muses have been announced in previous years. I therefore did a search and came up with the following, very detailed, casting announcement for the April 2003 Apollo (announced in late October 2002) Changes were made later (eg I think Lauren Cuthbertson was replaced) but we were, nonetheless, given a very good idea of what to expect

    http://www.danze.co..../news/1538.html

Let's hope that Kevin O'Hare remembers his promise and gives us some more names before we have to book!

  10. Hope there are no typos! I'd be grateful if those of you who have your About The House could check as I think I only have a very short window for editing.

  12. Yes, thank you, Arky. It was a most entertaining performance. I thought the students looked as if they were enjoying it as much as the audience were and it was great to have an opportunity of seeing Les Rendezvous. I was particularly pleased that it, correctly, took place in front of park gates (see this discussion from the ballet.co site during the 2005 Royal Ballet performances http://www.ballet.co...ng/5262.html#18)

  13. ENBS is giving its Summer Performance at he Bloomsbury Theatre, [near Euston Square tube station] today at 1pm & 7pm, and tomorrow 13 July at 1pm. Having seen them in rehearsal last week, I'm looking forward to tthis afternoon's show. Is anyone else going or perhaps someone saw them last week at their Studio Theatre?

I'll be there this afternoon, albeit not in the seat I'd booked. It appears mine was the only seat booked in the circle so they'll be closing it and reseating me downstairs. Sadly this must mean that it won't be as well attended as they'd hoped.

  14. I saw somewhere on Twitter that Sergei Polunin is going to be dancing with Tamara Rojo in Marguerite and Armand. Perhaps someone in the know can confirm whether this information is accurate.

A photo of the casting page of About the House was posted on Twitter. I don't think the ROH would publish this casting if they didn't think it was accurate. Whether or not it will happen is another question!

  15. Alison - thanks for noticing the date faux pas. I have taken the liberty of correcting the date.

They got the date wrong in the body of the press release as well as in the title:

Joining the Company at the start of the 2011/12 season will be Tierney Heap, Mayara Magri and Donald Thom from The Royal Ballet School and Nicol Edmonds from the Finnish National Ballet. All join as Artists.

  16. Finally, a mystery. According to the RBS Linbury performance programme, two graduates not listed in the press release, will also be joining: Laura Day and Reina Fuchigami. Perhaps the company has already announced that they are joining but it is odd their names aren't included.

Laura and Reina both joined some time ago. I believe there was an announcement at the time.

Edited to add that, although I seem to remember an announcement, I can't find it on the BRB website. However the following announcement did appear on the RBS website on January 25 of this year. I've highlighted the relevant section:

Royal Ballet School students to join The Royal Ballet

Following a visit to the School by Monica Mason and Kevin O’Hare on Friday 20 January, two Graduate students have been offered contracts with The Royal Ballet.

Manchester-born Tierney Heap and Brazilian Mayara Magri will join the Company from the beginning of the 2012 - 2013 season.

Fellow-Graduates Laura Day and Reina Fuchigami have already joined the School’s other sister company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Teo Dubreuil has accepted a contract with English National Ballet.

The Royal Ballet School prides itself on having one of the highest graduate employment rates in the world.
