We have just received our letters - auditioned 7th Jan for a Y7 DS & Y8 DD. My son has finals but it was a “not yet” for my daughter.

Does anyone have experience as to what to expect from finals?

Good luck to all those who may be receiving their letters soon!😊

A no for my DD year 7, good luck to everyone, signing off for now x

The audition is straightforward, around Gr4 standard, with some Center practice and basic pirouettes added.

The Director talks about seeing that special sparkle, especially in the eyes. Good Luck!

Thank you, she’s in idta grade 3 at the moment, full of determination and nothing phases her so not sure if to go for it or not x

We had a yes to the final round too! So happy!

Fabulous news for you!  My DD (applying for year 7) worried that she  might be asked to do stuff in the audition she doesn’t know, she’s still undecided if to apply or not, what sort of format is the audition, is it anything like the young dancers?

    thanks xx

Shellym - don't let one 'No' put you off applying again if your DD wants to and you can afford it.

Young dancers can change a lot over a year or two, and you never quite know what the audition panel are looking for each time.  Nerves can play a big part in how your child performs on the day too.

Also audition practice is valuable.  Every audition is a rehearsal for the next one.

Thank you, her dance teacher advised she has progressed a lot since last May, standing out from her peers

I think there's around 10 people apply for every place, around 40 to 50 get to finals for a max of around 20 places (girls). Numbers in each year group vary, year 11 is only 12 girls, year 10 around 18. Year groups sem to be nearer 18 than 12 though gurther down the school.

    Thank you x

  6. Can I ask what was included in the audition, my DD (auditions for a year 7 place) and her ballet teacher are interested. What sort of percentages get through to finals and then get offered.  DD got a no for young dancers last year so don’t even know if it’s worth even attempting.    Thanks in advance

I have no experience of the school mentioned  above

but i would  echo, as someone who took up ballet as an adult, that who teaches you   can make a massive difference,  i've been lucky enough to  take  classes taught by soem real big names , but that is  a side step the the point beign made , i have had things i;ve struggled with  formonths and then  a coupel of hours with a different teacher  and 'boom'  sorted  ...

I know teachers make a big difference, her private lesson is being taught by someone else than her usual dance teacher.  That’s why ideally we wanted to get into an associate class but easier said than done.

I’m feeling very similar feelings at the moment. I think it’s the time of year - hearing all the excitement of friends going to JAs and getting CAT places doesn’t help (although I am of course very pleased for them!) along with the miserable weather, coughs and colds! 😤

My DD had a no for associates and it feels like we’re at a standstill. BUT, after some excellent advice and kind words on here I realise that it’s just a lull in feeling ‘busy’ - it feels like we’re getting nowhere but actually the strength and technique my DD is building now we’re ‘back to basics’ is hugely valuable. After lots of focus on auditions, shows and exams before the summer, I’m taking a step back to appreciate the calm!

Ha ha, the dance school my dd goes to are busy preparing for a show!  No rest til March!!!

Unless she's also really fond of Irish dance, then perhaps that might be one to let go - the techniques of ballet and Irish dance don't really complement one another as my dd found out. Irish is all on the balls of your feet and you don't put your heels down when landing from jumps. This is completely opposite to ballet technique.

She is fond of it, they are busy preparing for a show, she enjoys all the dances, there will come a time when we have to cut back and focus on the strengths x

  10. Hello, my DD is 10, yr 6 at school and like many of the children here loves ballet with all her heart. She got a no this year from Elmhurst, royal ballet and Kings international, just auditioned for the nutcracker with BRB and a no for that today,

she’s currently grade 3 idta, practices in just about all her spare time, has extra private lessons.  She is petite, great flexibility, her teacher think she has great potential.  I see every rejection chipping away at her self confidence and there is only so much money, I can’t afford summer schools.  I want to tell her there is plenty of time and wish I could something to help.

  11. A no for my DD, y 6 at Birmingham not told her yet as ironically got the email just before I took her to dance, so proud of her for having the guts to go for it.  Well done to the yes’s and so sorry for the not now’s. DD got a no from Elmhurst too, double whammy rejection.  😢😢 not looking forward to telling her 😢😢

At MA level for RBS, speaking from my experience of the children in my child’s Y6 JA class, they really are all about physical facility as they like to call it. It becomes a much bigger consideration than at JA level. Also like glissade has said, understanding how to use what they have also becomes v important.

musicality and other more abstract esoteric qualities are equally important, but RBS want it all. I can honestly say that IMHO RBS definitely have a body type, Elmhurst less so.

RBS, slim, small head, long neck compact short to medium length torso, long arms, long legs that are proportionate, flexibility and beautiful feet with a high instep, especially for the girls.

At the vocational training stage, not the professional hiring stage, exceptional talent and potential is still of course a huge factor too, but ......

Get feedback every time and like others have said get an honest assessment of your daughters dance potential and physical suitability  for certain ballet training programs, they all are just that little bit different with RBS being about as purist as they come for classical ballet training.

Your daughter is still young, but find out now if her body type is right, so that she knows where her ballet strengths and focus needs to be.

Thank you, once we get the ja results I will chat to her teacher x

  13. Thanks I’ve asked her dance teacher to try and get feedback from a Elmhurst, DD is a petite girl, making fabulous progress according to her dance teacher, very bendy with some hyper mobility, going to be having a long chat with Dance teacher once we get J A results.  Just really wanted an insight as to how these auditions change as they get to year 7 x

  14. Hello, I’m pretty new to all this, DD has really only started taken ballet seriously in the last 6months, just a hobby before with weekly classes, she is a young year 5, year 6 in September.  As she kept going on about royal ballet and saying it would be her dream to go her dance teacher she suggested she should try for JA, we also tried for Elmhurst young dancers too.  Last week we found out it was a no from Elmhurst and she was truly devastated, really expecting a no from JA too so trying to get prepared.  It’s her first attempt at anything like this so we knew it was extremely slim odds.   She determined to work harder, and to up the practice she is already doing at home.  She wants to continue trying but I haven’t a clue how much more is expected of them at the MA and extended dancers auditions, what additional stuff do they have to do, what form does the audition take, is it still like a class?  Apologies if this has been answered in another thread.

    Thanks x
