Some people don't have sufficient, or any, online access and some people prefer to avoid Amazon. Some people just like having the actual items to use at will. To stop issuing dvds/blurays would not, imo, be a good idea.
(I was going to write something stronger but changed my mind)

Even with on line access, without a TV browser, I have to use my computer browser and play on the small monitor, or I could run 40 feet of HDMI cable to my large screen Smart TV, but imagine if someone were to trip over it. Apparently the browsers which come integral to smart TV's are fairly poor quality. So continue with your DVDs and Blu-Rays and enjoy the convenience and quality. Nothing stronger needed, the message is clear.

Europe is the same for Amazon, i-tunes and others. Also if you, or Amazon close your account, you lose the ability to stream your purchase. If you buy a movie on disc, it usually comes with a digital code, so you get own the disc without it being taken away from you at any time plus you can stream it free whilst your account remains valid and the streaming is available. You can watch the disc without buffering, lost internet connection, you can loan it to friends, play it without access to an account and sell it on used to get money back.

We may be getting away from the original intent of this thread, so it maybe useful if a moderator could consider whether this subject should be transferred to another thread.

You interest me strangely - have you tried closing an account on Amazon - despite the reams of advice on-line it is virtually impossible or so I found when I last tried. In the end I just stopped using it and it remains up there gathering dust for all eternity. It's a salutory thought that thousands of years hence future generations will be able to gaze in wonder on my purchasing history! Or were you talking about closing Prime?

Yes, Prime, many times. The streaming is done through Prime. Fortunately it is so easy. I have opened an account by mistake several times, which is also very easy and then closed it. The Amazon customer services told me that thousands of people open accounts for the free trial, just before Christmas, to get free p&p. Then close them straight after. There was a problem not long ago where Amazon closed many accounts due to errors they had made in their account. However it is also very easy to cancel your Amazon account, but I did this only in error.

just remember that if you buy a digital copy, in the US at least, you don't actually own it (books as well). It can be withdrawn at any time and for pretty much any reason

From the US Amazon T&C -" i. Availability of Purchased Digital Content. Purchased Digital Content will generally continue to be available to you for download or streaming from the Service, as applicable, but may become unavailable due to potential content provider licensing restrictions or for other reasons, and Amazon will not be liable to you if Purchased Digital Content becomes unavailable for further download or streaming."

  5. You currently have all these choices without penalty, so why would anyone wish to limit themselves  and others to only one choice. Where there is healthy competition, it is best for the consumer market. You can be sure that prices would escalate if such restrictive practices were introduced. If you prefer streaming, then go for it and if someone prefers disc to keep his favorite productions, than he is currently able to do so. That is the beauty of market diversity.

  6. The Theatre setting is stunning, but the stage set looks rather spartan. This is a full length ballet, longer than most previous attempts at Carmen. The producer has thrown away previous protocol, having gone back to the basics of the original book. He has also added other composers works to the Bizet score, with elements of Flamenco and Gypsy music. The cast appear to be very competent with lush traditional costumes. It appears that there are no big names, with the principle roles being selected from the corps de ballet at the last minute. The on stage horse idea is taken straight from the production of War Horse, with the dancer needing to ride it on stage. The ballet appears to be mainly classical in style, with the selection I have seen appearing very well choreographed.

Overall it appears to be of interest, but without seeing the complete performance, I cannot say whether or not this interest would endure a full length ballet. Much depends on the stage presence of the selected principles and they look the part in selected scenes.

I don't know where they got them from, the same source put Coppelia out too....I've just checked the page and now all RB content has been removed

Although illegitimate RB content is now getting removed, I notice that there are currently eight full length Bolshoi ballets, recent performances, uploaded on youtube for streaming. All by the same screen name but not by the Bolshoi. Surely they are not legitimate streams and like you say, where do they get them from ? You cant even buy these.

Not fair.  I made a mistake, which you have very publicly corrected.  I was in no way trying to catch Jeannette out, or feed her any bait.  To suggest that I have is disingenuous and wrong.

All good 'banter', which I cannot pretend that I didn't enjoy. No one damaged, but never claimed it was fair and far be it for me to attempt to correct a moderator.:D. Enjoy the streaming.

There is no company called Australian Ballet Theatre.

There is one called Ballet Theatre Australia

    www.ballettheatreaustralia.com

But that would be BTA not ABT.

Anyway, the streaming is not them and they are closed for maintenance. If you look at the link below, which is now streaming, all will be revealed.

That's interesting, I don't remember noticing that when I watched the Blu Ray - in fact I was highly impressed with the quality of the reproduction. I wonder if this means there is a chance of a Jewels release in Japan?

Alternatively, I wonder if the quality would be good enough for a future streaming if that was an option for ROH.

Jewels had been streamed illegally before it was removed by Naxos. The visible aspects of that streaming were so much better than those of the currently streamed Don Quixote, that they could only be contrasted. So I would suggest that it would be well suited to streaming.  It may be that streaming itself is not up to DVD standards. That having been said, it had been my opinion that it was good enough to release on DVD and Blu-Ray , so what do I know.

I'm wondering whether Stuttgart Ballet could be prevailed upon to release Initialen R.B.M.E. coupled with something else (Song of the Earth?  It's roughly the same length), but suspect there wouldn't be sufficient demand for "short" works, regardless of quality/significance.

I don't think that being short works would be a limiting factor. Stuttgart have made a couple of full length releases recently, however they are not known for being prolific in their DVD releases.

There's also, off the top of my head, Scotch mist and (in music) the Scotch snap. Scottish people have may have objected to the word in broader contexts for some time, but I doubt Balanchine was aware of this and it has a long history, being used by Scotsmen including Burns and - not far from Mendelssohn's own era - Sir Walter Scott.

(To be pedantic, Mendelssohn only ever privately named it the "Schottische", and as far as I'm aware never did so in English.)

So I wonder if he had anything in mind, an idiom for something difficult to find, a tasty snack, an alcoholic drink or as you say, just lack of awareness. My bet would be on the whisky, but we may never know.

Of course the English translation of the German 'Der Schottishe Tanz' is, remarkably,  'The Scottish Dance', so doubtful that he derived Scotch from that.

I doubt that Scotsman ever raised any concerns about it, including Scott, not that I ever heard and I worked there for over 25 years, but I find the 'Scotch Symphony' wouldn't have sounded quite as poetic as 'Scottish Symphony'. Of course, full of whisky at a Scottish ceilidh, may have been more fun.

Balanchine  and those that followed him got this very wrong. Scotch is primarily a type of whisky distilled in Scotland, but also can refer to a type of egg preparation or a form of broth etc.

The music from which his choreography was derived is based on the more respectfully named Scottish Symphony, written by Mendlesohhn, following his visit to Scotland.

  14. A good way for Ballet lovers to be introduced to Opera could be through Operas that contain Ballet. One such recommendation is the Richard Eyre 2010 production of Carmen, for the Metropolitan Opera, on DVD and Blue Ray. It is beautifully choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, with two fine PDD's introducing the first and third Act, performed by Martin Harvey (Ex Royal Ballet) and Maria Kowroski (NYCB) and dancing from the cast. It stars Elina  Garanca, Roberto Alagna and  Barbara Frittoli. The dancing, acting and singing is sumptuous with a favourite of mine being the Michaela area from Act 3.

  15. A good way for ballet fans to select an Opera, would be to chose one with ballet sequences as well. A good candidate for DVD and Blu-ray would be the Christopher Wheeldon choreographed 'Carmen' for the Metropolitan Opera 2010 production, starring Elena Garanca, Roberto Alanga and Barbara Frittoli. It has two Ballet Sequences from Martin Harvey and Maria Kowrosky and one of my favourite Arias for solo Soprano.

There is a Ballet sequence opening 1 and the second of the Ballet sequences can be seen on facebook under the following as well as choreographed sequences for the cast.

My dogs have had names that seemed appropriate to them but sadly not ballet related as far as I am aware.

My first dog was Shelley (name chosen by my Dad but he couldn't say why).  Then we had Pepper, name chosen by us all, because she was a brindle.  She had a dark strip down the centre of her back and was a pale brindle on one side and a much darker brindle on the other.  Then we had Chunk (not named by us - she had been the runt of the litter).  My current dog is called Chip.  He is a rescue and the Dogs' Home I got him from give the dogs names that are plays on sayings so he was "Chip off the old bark".  I thought Chip suited him so I kept the name rather than renaming him. He's absolutely keeping me sane during this awful pandemic.

Some of my friends are ballet AND opera goers.

and another friend is more Opera only and I’ve heard a few opera complaints and that they are definitely not going to see such and such a production or will definitely be giving certain operas a miss 😳....so I’d better check out with them first if there’s anything I should avoid ...well for a newby anyway.
I suppose it’s similar to ballet.... die hard ballet fans like myself will attend almost any ballet....well at least once ....though may sigh at certain choreographers but will give new works  a go in the hope of a miracle this time 🙄.... but some ballet goers will only go to the big well known classics as they know what they’re getting especially as these days tickets are not exactly cheap.

I don't know if we should be discussing Opera here, there may be some dispensation whilst we are in isolation, but Glyndebourne are streaming 'Der Rosenkavalier' in full, on you tube on 5th July. Not my favourite libretto, (men getting mixed up for women and visa versa) but the Richard Strauss music is stunning. Look out for the final trio and eventually the Orchestral suite.

It’s been almost three months since the full-ballet streamings began. Is anyone else beginning to experience Stream Fatigue? How many hours in each day do we have? Not that I’m not grateful. Just sayin’. 😏

Time for reflection ? I have been in lockdown since 6th March. Many things that otherwise I would not have the opportunity to see. Some really good modern and contemporary productions and an excellent full Raymonda from Mariinsky, all now favourites. I don't feel guilty either, because I also put  a base down and built a garden shed and learned how to bake bread and make soups and did some repairs.
