Hello Stevie, just reading your post now...  I can relate to having too many things and having to store outside of my home (in my case an apartment)! Just please do be careful about using your shed as storage if it isn't temperature / humidity controlled and *if* the recordings are precious to you as even plastic will deteriorate under extreme conditions over time. DVDs also have that metallic layer inside which again can deteriorate. (I work at an archives and we sometimes receive donation offers of items which sadly have been stored in less than ideal conditions.) Something to consider, but I get that the shed may be the most viable option at this time 🙂

Recently I have purchased plastic wallets, which store 90 DVD's at a time and occupy minimal space, but I cant bring myself to dispose of the original cases and booklets, so they have gone back into the shed in their boxes. When I get time I will catalogue them as per wallet number. But thanks for the tip, I hadn't considered frost damage, just ease of access, but it sounds a sensible precaution. I am sure that there will be many of us with similar issues, so it is good to discuss issues and potential solutions.

Monday 4 September, 6am. SkyArts: Rhapsody (Osipova, McRae) & The Two Pigeons (Cuthbertson, Muntagirov), Royal Ballet. For those who’d like a little Ashton magic after getting up early! 😆

The Two Pigeons, in Cinema, was the first time I had seen Fumi Kaneko. As I recall, she stood in at short notice for Laura Morera, as the Gypsy and was very good. I also confused it at the time with the Three Pigeons, which used to be a pub on the Portsmouth Road.

    ???!!!

Well, I already have the RB version on disc, so I think I'll assume that's what it is - particularly since I haven't been able to set up my old recording system since I moved.

At the risk of being obvious, have you carried out a factory reset.

    1. Press the Functions menu button on the remote control, and when the menu appears, select Others and press OK.
    2. Then select Set Up and press OK.
    3. Select To Others and press the right hand arrow on the circle pad.
    4. Then select Initialize and press OK.
    5. Wait for it to complete tuning in.

    Failing that, try a reboot.

Unplug your DVR from the power socket for a few minutes, until all power has drained. Then plug in the power plug again and switch on, Maybe the channels will need retuning, and try again.

As long as something does....!  The usual ridiculous show time for ballet.  Sky Arts clearly has no time for our artform.  Oh it does...always before 0800.. :(

Yes, rarely after 6:30 am GMT. Not an early riser, so I always record them, it will be a while after when I find out what they finally broadcast. My guess is they don't actually know which version it is.

I have just found a different Sky Arts Schedule which says that it is the Mariinsky version starring Viktoria Tereshina, another saying it is the POB and two others agreeing that it is Royal Ballet. So I will wait and see what shows up ???

And one of them says Nunez, Osipova and Munagirov.

Well yes indeed, I welcome the return of vinyl despite its cost and so do my family who have invested in expensive turntables, etc. CDs never cut it with me coz they never sounded the same, I think coz they only sampled sound waves so you didn't get the full-bodied sound? Anyway, good to hear from you again Stevie - you have informed many of my choices over the years. And yes, I also have the Houston Ghost Dances - but in my case the cost was far from reasonable so well done you!

I should have suggested a link to the thread which said, 'rare and out of stock releases at reasonable or bargain prices.' I will keep a look out !

"Put out the torches! Hide the moon! Hide the stars!"

This thread has been a major source of information to me since it was started by charliewise back in 2015 and quite recently I have gratefully added Coppel-A.I and Like Water for Chocolate with it's beautiful final pas de deux.  But these are exceptions. I have been building my collection of recordings for over 70 years, embracing not just Dance but also Theatre, Opera and much else. But sadly that is coming to an end as theatres and companies embrace streaming. Will we see programmes from such diverse companies as Opus Arte, The BBC, The Bolshoi etc issuing recordings on disk or being broadcast in the future? I fear not and much of the material from the past will not find it's way onto streaming. My collection is pretty comprehensive (and bulky!!!!) and I am so very grateful to Members of the Forum who have shared copies of their precious recordings with me. But I still mourn my failure to record certain performances eg.  :

    Theatre - Oscar Wilde's Salome - the performance of the original French Text by Radiodiffusion Television Francaise back in 1969 with the French Prima Ballerina Ludmilla Tcherina writhing orgiasticly in the title role (there is a copy on You Tube but it is virtually unwatchable;

    Opera - Harrison Birtwhistle's Gawain aired by the BBC but my recorder failed;

Darcey Bussell's Farewell Performance including Das Lied von der Erde with Gary Avis and Carlos Acosta, amazingly never released on disc.

I have seen many changes of format since my boyhood when I first started haunting second-hand shops looking for the old one-sided, G&T shellac 78 recordings of the like of Caruso, Schipa, Melba and Galli Curci. Each change of format has meant loss! Those of us who have been recording assiduously over the years are holding what are fast becoming historical collections which I suspect will never again see the light of day. And IMHO, streaming, targetted at the bucks,  is a poor substitute!

I have also built a sizeable collection and recently added 'Like Water for Chocolate' and 'Coppel-A.I'. Unfortunately when new recording like these arrive, something now has to go to make space in my cabinets. I am now storing older and less popular recording in boxes on shelves in the garden shed and catalogued under  'Garden Shed'.  Agreed, there are not so many new releases of late but a few out of print and some old rare gems turn up occasionally, recently picked up Houston Ballet 'Ghost Dances' at a reasonable price. Maybe we could add to this thread 'Rare and out of print releases'.

Remember, vinyl has made a comeback and the size of storage required for vinyl was a bigger issue than the compact disc version and being positive it has every chance of a return because of its convenience, hopefully when pandemic and wars fade away.

So it is not yet time to despair and we must try to remain positive.

I watched my DVD of Wheeldon/Talbot’s LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE ballet last night, as I prepare to travel next month to New York City’s Met to see ABT’s US premiere! A handsome production, beautifully portrayed by the Royal Ballet! 💗

As for the ballet, my short takes:

    - This is the ultimate Celebration of Mime and story telling, most handsomely decorated!

    - There are almost no traditional dances, that could be included in a gala program. The one big exception: a two-minute dance by the revolutionary leader, Juan Alejandrez (Cesar Corrales here)during the Campfire scene near the end of the work. I wonder which fabulous ABT soloist or corps man will essay this role?

    - The ghostly head of Mama Elena (Laura Morera here) floating above the stage will be remembered by all!

I’m truly looking forward to my trip next month! ✈️

Be careful in New York if they offer you Quail in Rose Petal sauce, it appears to have strange effects. I make sure that I stick to the British traditional Fish & Chips when out, they are quite safe.

  10. When I saw this ballet streamed, I hadn't read the synopsis previously and had difficulty in understanding what was happening. I have now read the book and seen the restored film on blu-ray and hence better prepared for the ballet release on disc, without it being any more credible.  I enjoyed the music and dancing though.

I mean the links to where the DVDs are sold. The video itself is fine.
This video's description has broken links only -
    DVD - https://naxos.lnk.to/OA1366D Blu-Ray - https://naxos.lnk.to/OABD7312D - these lead to 404 errors
So there doesn't seem to be an official selling page yet.

It is listed on Amazon.c.uk. I can only send the direct link to an email address, not yet available to pre order, but the bar code is
