Except for mid-performance emergencies or where I've planned in advance not to see part of a triple bill, only one: the Tristan & Isolde staging at the ROH which left half the auditorium only able to see a white box. Though I would have walked out of McGregor's Entity at Sadlers Wells, had it not bored me so much that I fell asleep despite the deafening music.
I can't actually remember walking out on a dance performance, although I've been very tempted - & really just worried that I would start laughing (Medusa springs to mind), which would not be nice.
But I remember - being stuck in the middle of a row, during a performance of Tristan & Isolde. It was truly boring! And because I was hemmed in, and also because I'd been given the ticket by an orchestra member, I remained. And slept 😴 Did I mention how boring it was, not to mention long....🙄🙄🙄

I am so excited and pleased for Claire Calvert. She is such a lovely ballerina and an accomplished interpreter in every role. Her beautiful legs, arms and particularly her gorgeous feet are perfect for this role. I've got a feeling that this performance is going to be such a great success that KOH will be sorry he didn't give her a couple more shows. Well deserved - and about time.
It would be great to start a thread (if it hasn't already been done) on particular dancers who despite always giving amazing performances either don't get promoted or and therefore don't get to dance certain roles. Romany Pajdak immediately springs to mind.....🙏🏽

Interesting, lovely article. It brought to mind former SWRB/BRB dancers, Chenca Williams and June Highwood. I think Williams worked at her mother's bridal boutique after retining from dancing and I believe Highwood used to knit sweaters.
I loved June Highwood, such a beautiful dancer with legs and feet to die for. I do think she was a bit underrated....as it's us old die hard SWRB fans who remember her I think...

Very interesting hope I get a chance to see it.

Wow thank you Jan. What a really interesting article. I loved Elisha, a beautiful ballerina - and those feet!
David Bintley was such a great director/ choreographer because he always chose the perfect dancers!

She famously likes her pointe shoes very, very dead.
Yes everyone can see the condition of her shoes, I was not aware that they were a cause for injury though, or that she was injured often....?

Osipova does get injured easily. If you see a closeup of her feet, you understand why.

Although I find it extraordinary that neither the RB or ENB have posted an obituary to this very special ballerina....or have I missed it???

A beautiful romantic ballerina. The last of her era. Such a huge inspiration to Italian dancers. RIP 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I think Romany Pajdak was also someone who without a doubt deserved to be promoted to 1st Soloist. Whenever she is on stage she always draws your attention with her beautiful dancing. Her promotion to soloist was LONG overdue but when it happened I thought finally she is being rewarded for her artistry and the incredible work she has done over the year's.
I just don't get the MGH promotion???
But we all have our favourites....

Congratulations to all of them! This news affected me more than I expected (in a good way)!
Honestly, I am surprised to not see Bracewell among the new principals.
Still, very happy for all this amazing dancers, so well deserved!
Bravi
I have to say I was totally surprised that William Bracewell hadn't been promoted - such a beautiful lyrical dancer with gorgeous lines. Big oversight!

What an inspirational wonderful man and such a great dancer! From admiring him in Seven Brides and memorised by Carousel. I spent my youth day dreaming of dancing the pdd from Carousel with him.....thankful we have so much of him on film. 🙏🏽RiP🙏🏽

Can I just recommend this wonderful Korean series on Netflix. About a young ballet student and a 70yr old . The storyline and acting is really good and the dancing as you'd expect from Korea is excellent. It's also really interesting to see snippets of the Korean countryside and I have to say it looks like a beautiful country. Maybe a place to visit one day....🙏🏽

I love that some of the time she is dancing with "afro" hair, this was one of the things that was talked about about by Marcelino Sambe in the RA's Black History Month insight. Apologies if there is a better way to describe black hair, happy to be corrected.
Afro hair is perfectly acceptable:)

Demelza Parish has announced on Instagram that she is retiring from the RB after 15years with the company. Demelza is one of those company artists whose presence on the stage was always a great pleasure to see. I for one would like to thank her for all the years she has performed and although she will be missed I send her my sincerest best wishes for her future plans.

Yuri Fateev did use to be a guest teacher with the RB. That is how Xander Parish came to join the Mariinsky. When RB classes have been open to the public in the past, they have been 1hr 15mins. ENB classes are 1hr 30mins. So, obviously, the length varies between companies.
Of course he did, how did I forget that?! I🙄🙄🙄
