  1. I agree with your comments, but I also think it is important that these issues are acknowledged and discussed. Youngsters should never be made to feel their feelings are somehow taboo or shameful, or that they should keep quiet and hide them.

They need to know that others feel the same way they do, help and support is available to them, and that they are not alone in their distress.

I totally agree. When I was a young teenager you didn't discuss your feelings nor admit to having them. I spent a long time very frightened of some negative thoughts and feelings I was having and instead of being heard and listened to and told it was a normal part of growing up, it was medicalised and I was labelled as ill and put on medication. It has taken me a long term to learn that feelings are ok and are not going to hurt me and that everyone has them and that I am not ill!

I think by the time a condition has been 'diagnosed' it is often too late! If a child has concerns about their figure or weight etc it needs to be talked about and they need reassuring that it is ok to have those concerns and feelings.

  2. I saw the Laines grad show a couple of years ago and the contemporary pieces were excellent. If you are on the dance course there, I believe it is an integral part of the training.

To get into Laines at 16 is an achievement indeed! I heard that one of the boys from White Lodge has turned down top classical ballet school to go there - a brave decision but best for him I'm sure.

My brother got a full scholarship to the Laines at 16. He is now 28 and been in full time work on the westend since!

  3. I mean it isn't a 'school' in the sense that it doesn't offer A' levels or GCSE's like RBS or any other full time course. There is no full time training there other than this graduate year. But it is very different from your local dance 'school'. It's hard to explain. A lot of children do go there for their open ballet classes so in that respect it is like a local ballet school. And yes as kitsch queen says it does get confusing with The Northern Ballet School in Manchester which provides full time 6th form dance training.

  4.

This looks like a great opportunity but surely it is not like an apprenticeship? Whilst the link mentions the opportunity to work with Northern Ballet the Northern Ballet Academy is a separate entity and a school!

The northern Ballet Acadamy is not a school. There is a seperate 6th form aged Northern Ballet School in Manchester that is different from the Northern Ballet Academy in Leeds. The Academy runs open classes, associate and CAT schemes. The professional graduate programme I think would very much be linked with the company. I may be wrong but I think I looks a great opportunity and I imagine it could well feed into the company if they liked what they saw!
  5. Probably because Tring is an independent school and they have different term dates. I imagine your school would be fine letting your DC out of school. My Dd's school has always given her 'educated off-site' days for auditions or RBS workshops / theatre visits.

  6.

we recorded it and my two girls are watching it now. they both said please mum dont turn into one of them mums. Not a chance. So glad we dont do comps.

We do comps but are so not like this! Not have we ever come across very competitive mums at comps! Comps can be very enjoyable and a great learning experience for kids and mums if you don't take it too seriously!

  8. Do you mean the one facing to the corner? With the toe pointing in front? We sent our Dd's with her arms slightly out instead of in first because we were doing both Elmhurst associates and royal and did them together. She got in RBS. I would say try to get them the same as the little drawings if you have time but if they like what they see they probably won't penalise for a slightly different photo. I worried loads about my Dd's photos but in the end it obviously didn't matter. However, if she doesn't get in you might always wonder?!! I sent mine off to photobox (uploaded them) and they came back very quickly. Sorry I'm not sure I am helping! Lol! As they say though they do take children with no dancing experience so it is unlikely they would penalise for an incorrect position.

Obviously if it was summer school where they only go on the photos they have to be perfect.

Edited to say I notice that the position I m talking about does have the arms out slightly. They were in first for the MA application. Sorry that's no help whatsoever! X
