I've tried to find out if this was possible in the past but wasn't able to find any free software that worked & didn't want to spend a fair amount of money on paid software with no means of knowing whether it would work.

OBS Studio works very well. You will also need a Mirabox and something that outputs a TV picture to HDMI. I use my PVR and/or DVD recorder. The Mirabox also says you can use Potplayer which is easier to setup than OBS Studio, but this only works with M$ Windows and I don't think this has the ability to schedule recordings. If you want to edit your recordings (clipping out commercials, etc) Shotcut is the way to go. I think Shotcut can record from a source like Mirabox, but I didn't spend the time to investigate. Run all this on Linux for a completely free experience, or use your Mac or Windows box.

  2. Here is one on Tollhouse Way (A457) in Smethwick. The sign the on the back of this one says the same thing. The road is a 4 lane dual carriage way, and I assume the signs are to direct cyclists on the new cycle path on the other side of the road, which I'm standing on to take the picture, although this makes no sense if you are coming the other way. I think a sign saying "use cycle path" would be better.

  3. I learned of this on MelonFarmers As much of this site can offend, I have copied the text of the article:

Rajan Zed is a perennial whinger who complains about hindu imagery being used outside of a religious context.

He has taken offence at the ballet La Bayadère for its irreverent treatment of religion in general and hinduism in particular.

The ballet seems to be on world tour with Zed whingeing at each venue that stages it. Zed spoke of performances by the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet claiming that:

This deeply problematic ballet was just a blatant belittling of a rich civilization and exhibited 19th-century orientalist attitudes.

Zed further said that Norwegian National Ballet should have shown some maturity before selecting a ballet like La Bayadère (The Temple Dancer) displaying Western caricaturing of Eastern heritage and abetting ethnic stereotyping. He added:

It was highly irresponsible for Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, whose strategy stated We will create and present operas and ballets which make an impact; to choose such a ballet which had been blamed for patronizing flawed mishmash of orientalist stereotypes, dehumanizing cultural portrayal and misrepresentation, offensive and degrading elements, needless appropriation of cultural motifs, essentialism, shallow exoticism, caricaturing, etc. Norwegian National Opera & Ballet could do better than this to serve its diverse stakeholders.

The Norwegian Ministry of Culture and Equality and its Minister Anette Trettebergstuen should also take its areas of responsibility culture, equality and discrimination more seriously, and have better understanding of the feelings of others to do the job more effectively.

Now Norwegian National Opera & Ballet has refused to cancel its production and Zed is not happy:

We plan to appeal to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre as it is simply unfair, unethical and inappropriate to spend taxpayer's money on caricaturing other culture.

These Chrome issues which appear out of thin air often seem to happen when it has done an update.

I wish I understood it all better (and I work in IT...what does that say?)

Me too. I stopped understanding computers when they stopped looking like this.

Chrome is very annoying with updates. Over the weekend, it decided an extension that I have used for years and has never been updated, contains malware and is now disabled by Chrome. The extension doesn't contain malware and besides, if I want to infect MY computer, I should be free to do so.

  5. HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security), is a web security policy mechanism that forces web browsers to interact with websites only via secure HTTPS connections (and never HTTP). It can cause problems. This might help in Chrome

    1. Type this into the address bar chrome://net-internals/#hsts

    2. In the query box type the domain (eg www.example.com or example.com) - don't type the full path. This will tell you if HSTS is active on that site.

    3. In the delete box, type the domain and press delete.

Your browser will no longer force an HTTPS connection for that site. You can test if its working properly by refreshing or navigating to the page.

... she references a book called "Mime in Ballet" by Beryl Morina unfortunately it didn’t have an ISBN number which I found later  ISBN: 9780953935802 . What I didn’t realize was just how expensive that book was (Amazon new £1290.00 used £995.00),

Yikes! It was £25 when it was published and I thought that was a touch pricey when I bought mine.

There is a copy in the British Library. I don't know if it available for an inter-library loan (I have no idea how that works), but if you're in London, you could probably have a look at it in the reading room (again I have no idea how that works).
