  1. Hi Kaymac,

Not sure I can offer any advice but my first question would be, what is her goal dance-wise? That may dictate to a certain extent, what she should be doing?

Secondly I wasn't sure who was asking for more? Her regular ballet teacher or your daughter? And is your daughter misssing styles of dance she no longer does?

I am sure everyone will be gentle!

  2. I know kids this age can be very keen and want to do more than 2 classes a week. However looking back, and knowing how ballet has taken over her life now, I would have encouraged her to do a variety of activities. Especially lots of outdoor, unstructured play.

Before you know it your dd has no free time, and nor do you.

Associate classes are great but their value depends a bit on how accessible they are. I am not sure if 3-4 hours in a car and a 2 hour ballet class is a sane way to spend a Saturday for an 8/9 year old. (which is what we did) It might have made a bit more sense in Year 6.

  3. Don't worry Aileen, I feel a bit ignorant too! My dd has been en pointe for about 4 years and it doesn't luckily seem this complicated for us. I go into the shop, she tries a pair on and and I pay a lot of money and walk out. Am I missing something? Her pointe work has never been spectacular, but then she has never complained of pain or got blisters.

Should she try on lots of pairs of different makes and fitters to compare?

  4. JulieW-Do they choose students who are strong (or potentially strong) in contemporary? Is a contemporary class part of audition process? Does this mean they prefer a more athletic body type?

    Certainily doesn't come across from web-site. Pointy22 teacher - I stand corrected.
  5.

Central is a ballet school as far as I am aware. Maybe she means Rambert. But I would expect her to know this. Didn't I read on another thread they are having a Day of Dance in December? You could get some first hand knowledge then.

  6. I just checked these weights on a BMI checker. This would be a healthy weight for a 16 year old, at the lower end of the spectrum. But this would give an adult a BMI of below 18.5 and would be considered underweight!

  7. Does anyone know whether or not students from other parts of the UK can apply to and attend The Dance School of Scotland. I didnt see this information on the web-site. I understand there are no fees. Are there m/any Welsh or English students there? Are the academics comparable? Finally how does the dance/academic mix work? Is it a normal secondary school with a dance and musical theatre course attached?

  8. It is lovely to watch these students, I would interested to know what I should be looking at to appreciate the Russian Style as opposed to the British style?

Also I counted over 25 fouettes, is this something all ballet students would be able to accomplish at the end of their training?

  9. Just came across this, a bit late for this year but they might do it every year.
