Dd and I were just talking about the future of our British ballet school graduates and reflecting on what other companies around the world offer. The US and other countries offer apprenticeships / trainee positions that the dancers pays for so they can be part of the company. This gives them valuable company and performance experience for their CVS etc and also provides an income for struggling ballet companies. Ds’s company in Europe has apprentices that get paid per performance only and are then auditioned for a corps contract at the end of the season. It’s a development program of sorts. Ballet companies need to think quickly in these difficult times how to help this generation of graduates and support their companies futures. Parents are going to have to pay for further training etc anyway so why not pay into / invest in a company. It’s just a suggestion, anyone have any ideas 💡

These schemes have flourished in recent years with the lack of paid contracts being available to new graduates. Schools are listing them as graduate destinations when in fact they are partly doing what the 3rd year of sixth form was designed to do - prepare the students for company roles. They all come with a cost and we have noted that some students do consecutive years at different schemes in the hope of gaining paid employment. Dd completed one recently, enjoyed the teaching and got plenty of performance opportunities as part of the main company. It would be interesting to hear other’s experiences of these schemes as despite her positive experiences my dd feels they are predominantly a money making scheme for the companies and a way to fill the gaps in the cast without having to pay a wage.

My DD has been offered an unpaid apprenticeship following graduation this year aged 19. As she will working but in an unpaid position does anyone know if she would be entitled to any help from the Government in relation to job seekers allowance, though she is not job seeking, but it used to be unemployment benefit and technically she is not employed as will not be receiving a wage. Anyone else in a similar position that can advise? Many thanks
