Are you looking for residential specifically or consider daily commute? If latter whereabouts are you based roughly & how far prepared to travel?

We are in Devon with my family in sussex so options and would look at either could combine a daily commute with a break away so open to different options.

  2. My daughter is a RBS junior associate and got a place on the waitlist for the summer intensive assuming chances of her getting of the waitlist are slim so looking for other possible summer courses she's 10 so she's not older enough for enb or brb courses. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or  places to look at?

I've seen London vocational ballet school do a course does anyone know anything about them? What are their courses are like? Many thanks

My Dd enjoyed Nicola Tarry’s summer school in Kent. She had a little boarding available. As a small dancer she enjoyed RCS in Glasgow - the contemporary was wonderful. She did a fabulous one in Northern France and we stayed in a campsite and had a little holiday at the same time. It was in a tiny village and quite remarkable. She also did an RAD one in Italy that her RBS associate teacher taught at ( very high standard) but she stayed with an Italian friend and we did not need to go.

There’s something really lovely and creative about a small, non competitive summer school. My Dd felt she learned more, got more attention and had more fun!

I can recommend Malvern and ENB for older students.

There are also summer schools in Marseille, Sicily and several in Switzerland if you can combine with holiday. Always good to see how the Europeans are teaching and the competition as you get older. There’s lots out there that are great, just try to look beyond the usual stuff.

I will try to find some links and post if I can.

Thank you will start looking any links would be great. She's 10 so first year she's been able to apply she gets so much out of her JA classes alongside her ballet lessons.

Waitlist for us too.  Will try for Spring next year, didn't even think to do that, but it's our first time that she's old enough for these intensives so we are slowly learning...

Same here, we did spring and summer at the same time think I may do it separately next time. We got waitlist for both which I'm taking as a positive.

From experience ( 3x summer intensive)

95% ( approx guess) of Summer intensive are international students - many are first timers. My Dd had only 5 or 6 English speaking students to mix with, of which several were at RBS already. My opinion ( I have no inside knowledge) is that it’s a chance for the school to see worldwide talent they haven’t seen already ( through the uk associate schemes). Internationals tend to want summer courses because of the academic requirements / term times internationally and, I guess, they make a summer of visiting UK. Internationals don’t seem to be so omnipresent at Eastertime. My opinion only - that at the higher levels 13+, the international students are at a very high standard indeed especially where pointework is concerned. My Dd struggled having just passed inter- foundation. Her fellow students from S.Korea and Japan were easily Adv 2 standard and looked like mini professionals. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter a jot because everyone takes their own time to develop and gain the strength needed and meantime, there are loads of other great opportunities out there which my Dd enjoyed just as much, if not more.

@Ruby Foo what other opportunities would you recommend this is first time applying for the RBS intensives I knew about them because my daughter is a Junior Associate which absolutely loves. She got waitlist for spring and summer, interested to know what else is around not necessarily for this year but next year. Any ballet opportunities she'd love. Thanks.

  6. We got waitlist same for the spring intensive, first time applying, took photos myself with her ballet teachers help for the position. Her JA teacher said that would be best did wonder if professional pictures would be an idea but thought having her teachers input would be more helpful.

Does anyone know what chances there are of coming of the waitlist?

  7. First time applying for my daughter she got waiting list.  We applied for the summer at the same time, now wondering if I should have waited and redone pictures found it hard taking them not sure I did her justice, if she didn't get the sprint does that mean she won't get the summer either. Does anyone know how many children they take? She's a year 5 JA so first time she's been old enough to apply for them. Good luck to all your dancers.

  8. Thank you for all responses I have read them and really appreciate the replies. It does seem interesting that there is such a difference in some marking, and doesn't appear to be any consistency with marking especially with video v in person examiners.

My daughter is still feeling disappointed in her marks but starting to feel proud of herself as she still sees that it is a good mark.

I am curious about the detailed report I didn't know you could do this, does her ballet school need to do it or could I request one. @drdance thank you for mentioning it I didn't know it was a thing I realise it does seem a bit extreme for a grade 3 exam when she got such a good mark but now she's got the brake down of her marks she needs more information what she did well, what she needs to work on etc I don't know if this report would answer these questions but she's comparing her grade 2 (which was an in person examiner) results to her grade 3 results.

She is very focused and determined so it's about getting back to where she was for her. She's back to grade 4 has started inter foundation and is back to her JA classes as a year 5.

All your comments are very much appreciated, Thank you.

  9. Hello,

Looking for some advice my DD has just got her results though for her grade 3 exam she got a high merit (71) which I am very proud of but she is disappointed and down hearted. Previously she has got distinction on her exams, results being in the 80s she has improved on her previous score so to drop so many marks is disheartening for her. Her ballet teacher was surprised by the result, she's worked incredibly hard for it is an junior associates her teacher there has said how well she is doing. It was a video recorded exam rather than an in person examiner.

I've told her we are proud of her, that she did her best and all she can do is move forward with more determination and focus. I can see in her face how disappointed she is and she's already wondering where she dropped marks. It does seem like she's dropped a lot when her teacher said she was ready and the exam went well. Has anyone else had this? Are the examiner harder markers? Ballet is very much her life and she's worried it will affect her applying when the time comes for dance schools/courses, I try not to talk about to far in the future but with a brother in secondary school and talk around future paths in school its hard to avoid especially as she is focused. She's 9 coming up 10.

    Thanks

They will say if they have a preference at the first session, yes. Different teachers prefer different hairstyles and in some centres it varies by year group as well.

At the centre we were at, the teacher preferred the crossed plaits and did a demonstration for anyone who wasn’t sure how to do it.

Thank you that's good to know I will do a bun for tomorrow and see what they say which I think is for the best I'm good a neat buns but think the plaits if required will need a few practice runs.

  11. My daughters starting at the Totnes centre I'm a bit unsure about hair had read somewhere that it was plaits but the handbook I received said this:

'HAIR FOR STUDENTS All students with long hair must wear their hair drawn back from their face in a neat style (for example a bun) so that their hair does not cause a distraction when they dance. Students with very short hair are allowed to wear it down if it is too short to be drawn back into a ponytail.'

I don't know if it's different for different centres. Think I'm going to do a bun take the ribbons with me and see what the teacher says we are allowed to stay for the first 30 mins so assuming they will go through things like that.

  12. Had anyone received their invoice? I had a form about payment how you would pay beginning of aug but no invoice yet it said payment was due 1st September realised that's next week so slightly panicking. Haven't received her uniform yet either 😬

  13. Have had information come through need to find a quiet time to sit and read it but does anyone know what JA1 means? Is it just the class? Timings are difficult for her current baller lesson so my head is a bit fried trying to make it all work 😱

For those who were fortunate enough to receive a place for September, once you confirmed the place acceptance by replying to the email with your child’s name and the centre offered, have you heard anything back?! Panicking I’ve not sent the email or they’ve not received it 😬🙏

I haven't received anything either just an automated reply. I've checked my sent because several times to double check I'd replied to the email 😬

  15. Hello, new JA mum here my daughter has been offered a place at the Totnes centre for what I assume will be a year 4 group is that how it works by school year? Does anyone know roughly what the times might be for classes? And how long before you get further information I know they must be so busy and have lots to do my daughter has asked me so many questions I don't know the answer too yet 😅  Thanks you 😊

Nope. Our audition was in April. I was going along nicely thinking there was loads of time before we hear. Now suddenly I am so impatient!!

Me too I think it's knowing all auditions have been held and thinking will we hear earlier than they said 😅

Omg I am the same - keep getting Royal Ballet emails and my heart skips a beat!

Daughter not asked at all yet but I am sure I will be constantly checking my inbox for the next couple of weeks 🙈🤣

Me too and my junk folder which I'm dreadful at checking normally 🤣 where did your daughter audition?

@Elz it consumes your life doesn’t it 😖driving me mad 🤪 and my daughter hasn’t asked for results or even mentioned anything since her audition, guess she knows her chances are slim

and she’s just enjoyed the whole audition experience x

My daughters the same she's focused on her next exam and hasn't mentioned results. I hadn't thought about it as knew auditions didn't end till beginning of June but now I know they have finished and I keep getting emails from the RBS I must of ticked a box somewhere putting me on a mailing list when I see the emails pop up it's a short in take of breath. She had a wonderful experience those I saw coming out of the audition before her had big smiles. Whatever the outcome it's a great experience for them all and am insight into how things run.

    Glad I found this forum.
