When it first happened at The Kennedy Center, my friend (who is an usher at the KC), was told that the new food/drink rules relate to sports stadiums and theatres. New audiences compare performing arts to movies and games.

Yikes, chicken wings is a new low. That reminds me of that woman who decided to start chomping and slurping through an entire sandwich ….
Hey, Ms Chicken Wings bought a ticket. Nowadays, it’s a balance…bring in new younger audience members. Last year, the Kennedy Center in Wash DC had new rules about drinks with topped cups, for ex. Ye Olde Etiquette no longer works.- 1

Received from the Kennedy Center. Interesting I thought that the company requested it and it is not apparently house policy
Thank you for purchasing tickets to American Ballet Theatre: Romeo and Juliet. In an effort to provide a safe environment for the artists, the company has requested for no late seating once the performance has begun. Late arrivals will be seated during the first intermission for Act 2. Please plan to arrive early for your performance.
Nasty behavior when dealing with fellow humans is apparently a sign of post-COVID times. It’s a major topic on airplanes, trains, etc. Theaters and museums too.- 2

This was a year ago (2022). Is there news about the June 2023 graduation program? -
It’s usually four couples, right? It used to be from Bruhn’s affiliated companies - RDB, RB, ABT & NBC - with substitutes some years. Oh…ABT’s lady is Chloe Misseldine…prepare for excitement!

My original link takes all to the full Beliaevsky recon. Sharper than YouTube and uploaded by the stager himself.

p.s. My autocorrect function went crazy. The first name of the above-cited stager is Stanislav…not Stanislavsky!

This one-act ballet, written by Glazunov for Petipa in 1900, has disappeared, says the impeccable Nadine Meisner. However the music is happily still available and there are several wonderful recordings. Recommended listening for fans of the score to Raymonda.
Does anyone know if there have been any subsequent attempts to set a ballet to this tremendous music?
Hello. I’m aware of two attempts.Stanislavsky Beliavsky used the Harvard Notes and other primary sources to stage Russes d’Amour at the Hermitage Theatre in StP, just before COVID…Dec 2019, I believe. Info here:
https://afterpetipa.com/ballet/the-trail-of-damis-1900/Too, I’m aware of one earlier attempt by a French ballet master, 15-20 years ago? The film of the last 12 minutes did not seem as correct as the more recent reconstruction by Beliavsky. Sorry, the name is in my catalogue; far away from it now. Apologies.

I think about Justin Peck as a Jerome Robbins type, due to the general variety and Americanism of his work…not just the West Side Story connection.
Despite the Russian/USSR connection, I’ve not thought of Ratmansky as a New Balanchine. Crazy thing. It may be about the direct tie to the Stepanov notations for the classical pieces.

FYI, I’ve been hearing about the Australia connection for Harlequinade since before I saw the H premiere in NY. It may not have been in the original announcement but was known at the time of the NY premiere. We may have even discussed it here…but I’m too tired to look. 😉 [Years ago, we talked about London perhaps seeing Harlequinade in the next tour of the Australians…discussed well before COVID.]
Often there are huge gaps between premiere times, even before COVID…such as the premieres of Of Love & Rage between Costa Mesa, then NYC, and Canada, which hasn’t even been announced, that I’ve read. “Collaboration” could be monetary - not just the creation of designs, etc.

Wasn’t Harlequinade a co-production with Australian Ballet? A co-creation.
The way that new AD Susan Jaffe talks in this recent interview, there will be few luxuriously-designed full-evening ballets in ABT’s future.

Would you like to keep us updated with those, Jeannette? I for one wasn't aware of them.
And all the best for your retirement.
Thanks!re PNB - Information on digital subscription is here:
https://order.pnb.org/packages/fixed/1080
Luckily, they’re offering a partial-season subscription to the four remaining winter/spring presentations…full reconstructed Giselle, full Balanchine Midsummer Dream and two mixed bills. It’s all in the above link. Each stream is just after the final live performance…usually a film of the first-night’s cast.
It’s pricey but in high resolution. A gem for people living far from world-class live ballet. If more companies did this, I’d be subscribing a lot.

I’m hoping for more paid streams, as Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) is doing, as I’ve retired to Puerto Rico, where there’s minimal live professional ballet. That’s all - sweet and simple.

Excellent news! As with the ABT arrangement, he should have time to continue to freelance elsewhere. A win-win situation.

Horrible news. I remember him well from live performances in Zurich and Berlin.
May he RIP.- 2

Probably a post for the shortest ballet programme in the world, but since it’s available internationally, and available on i player for 11months in the UK, I thought I’d mention this annual performance for tv by the Staatballett Wien (Vienna State Ballet). I’ve been watching this new year concert with family for decades since young, and am amazed at the quality and thought put into the dancing nowadays. The thoughts don’t always work (especially when the choreographer tries to go avant garde) but this year’s offering is full of classical dancing and charming performances so I wanted to recommend it here.
The choreography this year is by Ashley Page, previously artistic director of Scottish Ballet, who has choreographed for them as well as RB, San Francisco Ballet, and other companies. Page may be known for modern and groundbreaking choreography, but he is also a masterful choreographer for grand occasions and galas, able to produce the most elegant pieces of classical dance that show off the beauty of his dancers’ line and virtuosity.
The pieces danced are a waltz by Josef Strauss called Pearls of Love, a brisk and witty polka by Eduard Strauss called Up and Away, and the famous Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss Jr. The dancers include their first soloists (ie principals at VSB) Hyo-Jung Kang (a wonderful dramatic ballerina who was a principal of Stuttgart Ballet for 10 years before heading to Vienna), Maria Yakovleva, Ketevan Papava (both previously from the Mariinsky), and Davide Dato (Milan and Vienna trained, and a popular gala invitee and guest artist). The dancing starts in the second half, but the non danced pieces are well worth watching too.
So glad that you’ve posted this thread-review, Emeralds. I’ve watched - and taped/DVD’ed - all dance segments every year since 1987! Considering what we’ve all been through, watching mostly-pared-down, modernized and “wonked” ballets this past year, it was a pure joy to savior three ballets, all with gorgeous Imperial-style costumes and pointe shoes for the women. It was a light and bright traditional dream come true.
I especially adored the short blue butterfly tutu, and blue pointe shoes, on Maria Yakovleva, during the Up and Away polka. Even Marius Petipa would have approved!

I have to say I'm completely mystified by this! What is it about Pite's modern dance steps that apparently promotes socialism (or indeed any other world view)?
Pite’s mass groupings, moving together as machines. Dark, bland, muddy. Ugly as h***. I turn to Imperial joy…Petipa forever!
-
For me: CLASSICISM. Pointe shoes for women and a general “classical” look for costumes, to melodious tunes (old or new). Aspiring to Imperial beauty, even if not the theme, eg, Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco!
Absolutely no Crystal Pite-style socialist modern dance.

I believe that it’s primarily budget and, secondarily, past casting decisions that may or may not jibe with Wokeness.

The ABT Board may be favoring these sorts of commissions, with the Woke angle:

LIFTED is ABT’s newest commission. Food for thought.

Digital Access to PNB’s Historical GISELLE (starts 16 Feb)
in Ballet / Dance news & information

Yes, Fiona, the price is rather steep. However, as I’m retired and living on an island far from any major ballet troupe, PNB’s annual digital subscription (about $250 for 7 ballet nights) is a saving grace. Imagine what it would cost me to fly to a large US city + lodging, etc! Oddly, PNB has become my “virtual local company,” as I am their regular subscriber in the Caribbean. (If only other companies on this earth also offered full-season virtual subscriptions! I’m hoping that PNB can maintain this generosity for many years to come!)
Watched Giselle yesterday. What a treasure, so gorgeously filmed in HD, with a mixture of camera angles/zooms! This was better than the single high-up camera of a 2014 performance shown during the early-COVID months…and I was darn grateful for that in May 2020.
My lone complaint about the PNB recon of Giselle, compared to the 2019 Bolshoi-Ratmansky version: no Fugue des Wilis in Act II, as at the Bolshoi (or the later Ukrainian-Ratmansky version, I’ve read)…but the PNB recon includes the drunken villagers episode in the middle of Act II, before Albrecht’s entrance.
