Shame that the female star of the film, Michaela De Prince, isn’t even named!   Wow. That smacks of r*****. ..but I’ll shush up for the sake of peace.

I thought he did! I just checked my blu-ray collection and I've recordings of the following Neumeier ballets - Beethoven Project, La Dame aux Camélias, Ghost Light, A Midsummer NIght's Dream, Nijinsky, and Tatiana. At least two of those I think have been released in the last year!

Precisely. That’s why I asked about Liliom. ;)

What seems ridiculous is that the test in question was done on Christmas Day but apparently the result only came a few days ago. Surely the results of tests should be available more quickly, and especially with top sportspeople and above all BEFORE big competitions not in the middle of them.

Veteran US sports journalist, Phil Hersh, may have expressed it best during an interview on the Peacock Streaming Network’s show Olympic Ice:

Was Valieva’s sample purposely transported to Stockholm by an old Russian sleigh, moving across the Baltic Sea?

Hersh also quipped: Going by these methods, we should learn the results of the figure skating Team Event by 2036.

Many thanks Jeannette for highlighting this. All new to me and fabulous to see. I’m sure I’ll watch it again in the next couple of days (and I’ll fast forward the interval).

Just watched it live. Wasn’t it sublime? Lovely performance, so well filmed.…e.g., knowing when to employ close-ups, medium or far distance. All three works are delights. How lucky can we be?

p.s. Childs’ Concerto is new to me…packing a punch in 10 minutes.

  6. Speaking of Vienna…

We cannot forget the Vienna Philharmonic’s annual New Year’s Day concert, always featuring a couple of works performed by the Vienna State Ballet. Some details in English on this PBS (US) website, including the full list of musical offerings. One of the ballets seems to be the “1,001 Nights Waltz” by Strauss, Jr., filmed in Schoenbrunn.

Sorry Jeanette, I'm confusing you with triple bills.

Sarasota said they weren't able to carry on with streaming their own work (cost I think but not really sure). The filmed triple bill I referred to was the UK Ashton triple at the end of April,  beginning of May. That does seem to be being streamed which is good news for all us Ashton fans (especially international ones like you)

When I said 'we have the triple bill' I meant the UK. Sorry to get your hopes up. But at least you may have an option of attending Sarasota (lucky you!) And you can also enjoy our streamed Ashton triple.

Thanks for the clarification. I already saw the April/May streamed program as a subscriber…a half-year ago.  It was lovely.

So I’ll continue with plans to see the show in NYC this August 2022.

Such interesting insights and comments on this production.   Would someone who has seen the ROH stream be able to comment, please, on whether the stream features the same dancers in the "The Royal Ballet rehearse The Dante Project" in the rehearsal pas de deux?   Watson/Lamb and Ball/Hayward, IIRC?   Thank you all in advance.

“Yes” is the answer to both questions, Myrtle. They performed magnificently. Merry Christmas!

Adoring the Dante Project stream. Of course, it was uniquely amazing live, but still has the same profound impact …..

Me too! A total work of art. I look forward to multiple repeated viewings while it’s still up.

I love the score, which seems to borrow from the classics in some spots. I recognized Ashton’s Apparitions (Liszt) towards the end of part one.

Lucky you, Jeanette. I'm very envious. What a pity Sarasota have stopped streaming. I'd love to have seen that programme and also the new David Bintley. I did email them to ask but they said they couldn't carry on with the streaming. At least we have the triple bill which hopefully is being streamed as its being filmed so that's something to look forward to.

Hi, jmhopton. Sorry but I don’t understand. Did you read or hear that an upcoming Sarasota 3ple bill will be filmed for possible streaming?  I won’t travel if I can pay to watch a performance at home. ;)

  12. Happy news from Sarasota on the Ashton front…substantial  ballets on the horizon!  The troupe’s August 2022 visit to NYC’s Joyce Theater will consist of a triple bill that includes two (2) Ashtons: Birthday Offering and the rare Varii Capricci. Woohoo!!! 🥳

Hopefully, this portends a return to substantial Ashton programming during their 2022/2023 home season.

This rather confirms the view that the only place where Ashton's work is really safe is Sarasota.  As has been said previously they dance Ashton from and with love, the Royal Ballet more from duty.  Regrettably BRB appear to have abandoned it entirely.

Ashton ballets are safe in Sarasota only when they are programmed. Alas, there are none this season. Maybe in 2022/2023?

I remember when LFB/ENB mounted Apparitions in the late 80s with Peter Schaufuss and Natalya Makarova.  Despite being a huge Ashtonphile I distinctly remember being underwhelmed by it and thinking it very long.  Despite all the best intentions the revival was not regarded as a success, especially by the critics.

I do remember hearing Jean Bedells saying that she had been involved in the revival but was so unhappy with the result that she demanded her name was removed from the credits.  She was mounting Job for BRB at the time.  Job went very much better.

The revival of Apparitions in Sarasota three years ago was better regarded than the ‘80s LFB one. It didn’t seem long to me. Gomes was fantastic as the poet.

I caught the “new lockdown” repetition of this program yesterday. Fantastic! Schlaepfer’s Marsch, Walter, Polka is a fresh and witty look at favorites from the Strauss family, with truly ingenious costumes, some based on Hungarian folkloric dresses. I’ll never think the same way as before when hearing the Radetzky March at the annual New Year concerts from the Musikverein!

Balanchine’s Symphony in C was neatly rendered by the Vienna dancers & magnificently filmed.

I’m looking forward to the Dec 4 “new lockdown repeat” of the September 21 stream…Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements among three works to be shown for free.
