Tomas Mock, Lukas Bjørneboe Brændsrød, Nathalie Harrison, Lara Turk and Hannah Grennell all spring to my mind.
oh no, not Lukas Bjørneboe Brændsrød. he is a prince, belongs as a principle. not stuck in basically non-dancing roles.

I've just seen a photo online of Hayward in Manon Act 3 last year, and her dress was still raggedy but knee-length (it's a Facebook photo and I don't know how to post it here or if it would be OK to do so). So the dress has obviously been considerably shortened for this run. I wonder if that was for 'dramatic' effect or for practical reasons?
i am thinking it is not a dress but an undergarment of some sort. the men ripped off her dress and left her in tattered unders. personally, i find long skirts to be antithetical to ballet where i want to see legs at least of the main characters.
reminds me of performance of Kings of the Dance with Hallberg many years ago - in a big, heavy, pleated skirt. I mean, here you have one of the real greats of ballet and they put him in a stupid skirt. what line? what movement? all covered up.- 2

That reminds me: of all the stupid things which have been going through my head while I've been watching this run of Manon, the most frequent has been to wonder, given the relative newness and, I think, increased length of the other deportees' dresses in recent years, what on earth happened to Manon's to get it so torn and shortened? Perhaps it got caught up in some of the ship's (possibly fairly rudimentary) machinery and got ripped?
i always wonder, why are they so short-waisted. makes the dancer look deformed. but that's a fun question you asked.

The Osipova/Shklyarov Manons were among the most passionate I have ever seen. If we are never to get a reprise I have the memories indelibly stamped in my head and my heart.
there is the most wonderful video on you tube - brought me to tears this evening. and i see i commented on it a year ago. i think i was not familiar with him. the two of them are SO joyful, so inhabiting the roles they are real. there is also a video of the curtain call. they don't seem frosty at all.
i think shklyarov is the best i've seen in this role, of course being in california, i am talking on video. he has a wild way of emoting that is fabulous, but still in control. as much as i love vadim, sometimes he is just too precise and flowy with his hands.

White Crow has made its way into cinemas over here, and I saw the film on Friday night.
... I loved the acting, too, both by Oleg Ivenko and by Ralph Fiennes....In summary, very impressed with every minute of the film.
what about Polunin?

Oh dear that is awful and so disheartening for him I hope he recovers asap.
A very difficult ballet to suddenly have to adjust to a new partner too.
i hope Reece Clarke had time to practice those treacherous throw-twist lifts during interval. i've not really heard of him before.
it seems there should always be covers for the leads just in case. -

Vadim will be guesting in National Ballet of Japan's Manon in February, two performances. He is very hugely popular here as he used to be the season guest principal there as well as appearing in many galas and RB tour. He doesn't need aggressive marketing because that doesn't suit him and he is a well known and brilliant dancer, the very best of his generation and has lots of opportunities to dance all over the world. His art speaks for himself.
popular in japan is one thing, popular and well-known world wide outside of ballet circles is another.
let's put it this way, when i got back into watching ballet it was because of polunin's "take me to church" and the other films, advertising, etc he did. the poster ROH made with him leaping into the sky was amazing. it grabbed your attention, made you say "whoa!"
i used to be part of this forum when bruce ran it years ago.
art may speak, but it doesn't necessarily translate to $$ which can be put away for when the art is silent. -

"If ROH placed a well designed poster in just the top three Tube stations (passenger-wise) they would attract the attention of many hundreds of thousands of people. ... Busy people with disposable income but a lack of joy in their lives are the perfect target."
exactly! they've done some amazing posters in the past.- 2

Perhaps he just doesn't want to be marketed though!
Maybe as an artist he hopes his dancing speaks for itself and he's happy with that.
perhaps. he does a lot of guesting around the world which speaks to an agent putting things together. maybe he only wants to appeal to ballet lovers. which, in the overall scheme of things, is a very small audience.
to market himself more broadly would be to bring dance into the eye of those who aren't normally aware of it. -
will vadim be dancing in manon again this year? does it seem wasteful to have guest artists in when there is the most marvelous dancer already in residence?
i think vadim needs more aggressive marketing. modeling gigs maybe. something that gives him the kind of exposure sergei or bolle had. something to generate excitement other than he is a very good dancer. -

Tewsley and Ferri in the final PDD in Manon. (Is it just me or does some of the partnering seem a tad uncertain?)
no, i don't think it is just you, it looks a little under-rehearsed. but i do love ferri in this role. she is so loose and her feet!
the way she just collapses in his arms is quite amazing.
but my all time favorite couple is Cope and Guillem. that special PDD performance - can't remember what even right now.- 1

* A caveat in this regard....I am no film technician, but are we sure that the recording/playback speed of the older version (in particular) accurately represents the speed at which this was actually performed?
exactly my thoughts. i was trying to listen to hear the pitch was different in the orchestra and i think it was definitely higher in the fonteyn slip.
re cutherbertson: I don't see a bad night here, maybe one bobble, but sergie's one-arm fish are the best ever. and the turns SO fast. he was just a great partner. blair wasn't a slouch either. i've seen some really horrid versions of this pdd on youtube.
i wish we could see his Manon. -

and here i was hoping kobborg would have put the kabosh on putin showing up. that's not rebelliousness, that's disrespect for the whole ballet, the other dancers, the audience, the choreographer. it is not part of Romeo the character and above all, dancers are actors, portraying a role and costumes reflect that role. it's polunin saying his tattoo is more important than everything else.

... I am mostly struck by the loss of finesse in Polunin's dancing. ...But at many points, there is an evident lack of precision and polish in much of the actual dance quality - the landings; the pirouettes; some of the partnering - which I find a rather sad reminder of greatness let slip away. It's still there in glimmers, but what could have been...
...
yes, i totally agree. i was watching a video of a bit of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and was reminded of how good he was. the finesse.
i wonder if koborg choreographed sergei's romeo to reflect his style of dancing now. flailing arms, horrid landings. polunin may think it is a freer way of doing ballet but i think many times it is just sloppy and reflects his spoken attitude about not taking class on a regular basis. -

oh this is great, so they didn't dance in black the whole time. that's good to hear.
-
just looking at the videos that are out there, curtain calls etc, i gotta say, black long dresses for all the women seems like a bad choice. especially at the distances people have to view the stage. they simply fade into the shadows. but that's my aesthetic.

Verona arena capacity is 30,000 people although only 15,000 are allowed due to health and safety reasons apparently. cf ROH less than 2,300. Or did you mean Belgrade?
it was a short vid posted by one of the dancers - caption said a few minutes before the show. i think it must have been the angle of the shot because later pics showed thousands of people.
it's hard to imagine all the work, the time and effort it took to put on this production for just one night. whatever i think of polunin's politics and antics, this was quite an amazing undertaking. -
a different photo shows a packed house! or arena as the case may be.

i thought polunin looked amazingly thin. good thing cojocaru is tiny.

a video on instagram shows so many empty seats!

i am wondering how it went! anyone see any reviews anywhere? i didn't realize it was an outdoor venue, not being familiar with Italy.

Jonathan Cope has been on sabbatical leave for the last 2 seasons. It is not uncommon, when people take a break from their jobs, for them to develop other interests and/or decide not to return. And it is quite usual, also, for the door to be left open in the way the RB has done with him.
oh, i thought he was still teaching. i miss his dancing! thanks for the info.

i like this video of polunin and Maria Kochetkova. he does the best one-armed fish dive i've seen. unfortunately it is a truncated version of the pdd so only two fish. the lift of his chin as he waits for her to grab his arm is one of those small things i notice, that made him an exciting dancer to watch in the old days.
