I thought London  had gone all ready  unless it;s moved ...

however my suspicion aobut the UK   importer / master franchise  appears to be correct

Online warehouse part she referred to as London. No click and collect available and she was unable to say if they would still be operating by this Friday.

Have just been to the Hull Sansha shop to find a notice on the door that they ceased trading on 1st May. Probably explains the sale!

Hi. I spoke with them on Tuesday as wanted to order a leotard

Hull is closed. London will be closing but they are not sure when

I have to agree with Harwel, why do you need external classes especially if the child in question is at vocational school.

I am not saying she will continue with her current hours. Dd did not want to board so this was our comprimise.

20 hours at school plus a max of 5-6 for grades and tap will be the limit.

I don’t Even know why you would consider doing external classes apart from a summer school or 2.

Its a non boarding performing arts secondary school - no Tap Dance or grade work.

Whilst it will give Dd the opportunity to further develop singing/acting (included in the quoted hours) she would also like to do her intermediate/advanced.

Auditions are being held all next week at local dance schools....look at facebook page too....

We aim for small cast around 40-60.   Students get a chance to dance the main lead solos with repertoire from Royal Ballet and Scottish Ballet.   We have some wonderful ex-professionals teaching and coaching for us.  We work with the teachers to promote their school and principals and teachers are welcome at all rehearsals.

I emailed last week but no response?

    Hi all.

Im sure this has been asked before but as usual I can’t find the post.

    Floppy practice/half tutu’s.

My DD has been loaned one for her upcoming Adv1 exam. It’s rather floppy/droopy and I’m not sure if spray starch will work. I’m also wary as it’s black and don’t want to leave any white marks on it.

If spray starch is the answer how do I apply it? Per layer, over the entire skirt, upside down and then do I have to iron it to activate the starch? Thank you.

I handtacked my dd one with black hand stitching thread (super strong) as she needed a pancake look and I refused to let her practice in the real one!

I found a video online different to the links above where u tack in a straight line looping back on yourself from the shortest layer out to second longest just catching the under layer as you go. It was super easy.

But who is doing the "expecting"? Are parents pushing children into every lesson or competition? If it is a school, then as others have said, pull back.

But, please, can we be cautious here, rather than get wound up. To be frank, you say "I have heard" - so this could be second-hand or a misunderstanding of what people think children are doing ... We need evidence, rather than hearsay.

Other posters' responses suggest that the norm is not 70 hours a week! And that in the main in the UK, there is more good sense and care, than the overuse you are claiming. The good sense and care would seem to be the norm, which is good.

And if it's your children, then take control! No teacher is worth overworking a growing body, no matter they promise miracles.

I have seen two timetables for myself

All you have to do for actual proof is look through instagram. There are many dancers /teachers that love to say how many hours the kids have been hammering away at whatever class.

  8. I know of two schools with extremely good reputations in the dance world where it is the "norm" to dance 4-8 every day plus weekend Associates and weekend classes... 25+ hours a week as a junior.

My dd is 10 and dances 14 hours a week  plus comps and Associates but in September will attend vocational school and I will be looking at whether to reduce external classes as will be doing 20 hrs at school.

I agree though, as a parent you need to take responsibility for your childs schedule - I insist Dd has 2 evenings off dance classes and not all holidays are full of workshops /conventions.

Unfortunately it appears the commercialism of how popular you are on social media/where you're seen doing tricks/who you ve had a photoshoot with is becoming more important than your dance facility and talent.

Hi this is my first post. This may seem like a stupid question but my daughter is in year 3 and will be auditioning for both Royal ballet junior associates and elmhurst this year. She wears leather full soles in her normals classes and satin split soles for her festivals. Any advice on which shoes she should wear ?? What did your dd’s wear ?? Thank you in advance xx

My dd is an Elmhurst JA. Their uniform is pink full sole stretch satin ballet shoes - I would go full sole.

Last month Duchy Ballet celebrated its 20th anniversary with a splendid performance of The Nutcracker with Sara Maria Barton of Ballet West as the "Sugar Rum Cherry" Next year, Chelmsford Ballet Company will celebrate its 70th anniversary. It will be a splendid affair if the 69th year performance of The Snow Queen is anything to go by.   I started to think that if two medium size communities in the South of England can produce such excellence then perhaps we in the North should have a go too.  I canvassed the idea with friends on Facebook and found lots of support and encouragement from dancers of all ages and abilities from all parts of the North.

We discussed how to get started.  We decided that one possible way forward might be to hold a free 90-minute class at a place  easily accessible by road or public transport from the M62 corridor and see who turns up.  Huddersfield is an obvious location as it is on the Trans-Pennine main line  with direct rail links to Barnsley, Bradford, Rothrham and Sheffield and it is close to the M62 and M1 motorways.    To attract good dancers the teacher would have to be well known on both sides of the Pennines.  I am glad to say that Jane Tucker of Northern Ballet, an excellent teacher who also teaches the intensive repertoire workshops for KNT in Manchester, has kindly agreed to give that first class.

That class will tale place at Huddersfield Leisure Centre which is a short walk from the rail and bus stations on 26 May 2018 between 15:00 and 16:30.   Admission to the class is free but space is limited so attendees have to register in advance.  They can do so through Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/powerhouse-ballet-tickets-45023701102,  After the class a vote will be taken on a show of hands as to whether we want to form a ballet company in the North. If we decide to do so, 4 or 5 volunteers will be chosen for a steering committee to decide the legal format of the company, draw up a business plan, seek funding and eventually appoint an artistic director and ballet master or mistress.    If all goes well, we should be ready to stage our first production early in the New Year.

We hope to give opportunities to dancers of all ages and abilities from talented students at the leading ballet schools to kids who are learning the basics and everyone in between.    As we plan to hold a short business meeting immediately after the class and have not yet made any chaperoning arrangements, those attending that first class will have to be 18 or over  but one of the first prorities of the steering committee will be to arrange a class or audition for students below that age.

We are looking not just for dancers but also for artists, costume and set designers, carpenters, musicians, stage crew, photographers, technicians, front of house managers and administrators.  In short, just about everyone with a skill, talent pr experience that can help us stage a show.

The provisional name of the project is "Powerhouse Ballet".   We have chosen that name partly because there is already a Northern Ballet and a Northern Ballet School and partly because we hope to attract dancers from he whole M62 corridor and points North and South.  We may well change that name to something more elegant if and when we get started.

For those who want more information,  we have a website at http://www.powerhouseballet.co.uk/, a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/powerhouseballet/ and a twitter account at https://twitter.com/powerhousedball.   I have already written to the RAD Regional Manager for the North and the dance agencies for the Northwest and Yorkshire.  Over the next few weeks I shall write to every dance school in the region that I can find from the Hammond and Northern Ballet School downwards.   Should anyone have any questions he or she is welcome to contact me through BalletcoForum or the Powerhouse Ballet message form.

I have one under 18 that would be interested if you open this out. Also my mum is a costume designer for theatres -  I will pass this onto her and if Dd was attending audition wise I would happily chaperone the audition.

I cannot help with the liquid face paint but just wanted to ask - with the official face lace - that fell off - did you add any extra adhesive or anything to help it stay in place? I know my DD has eyelash glue and I have seen comments that people use it to stop face lace peeling off. I know my DD uses it other than for just eyelashes but not sure exactly what for as she dances in the Caribbean (hot and humid)

No not tried eyelash glue but I ll give it a go thanks

I believe that EVERYONE should be able to do a ballet pirouette with the right teaching. There are lots of fantastic teachers out there who aren't quite so prolific in their commercialism and social media presence! Having studied with several teachers who 'claim' to be experts in pirouettes, I was surprised to see that I use a lot of the tips and tricks with my own students, including those at MIDAS (and have done for many years). I'm not saying don't go to those workshops, but you might be better off spending the same amount of money on a private lesson with a less famous, but equally expert teacher (such as a teacher at DD's school if that's possible).

I think op had mentioned had asked about this but not able to find anyone. I certainly dont fall for the commercialism of alot of the dance world but credit where credit is due Rosina has helped my dd in her technique.

If you contact Rosina via email she will let you know of any open workshops up in this area - you could ask if possible to do a quick 15 minute surgery with her after session ( she does these at move it for £5 for 5 minutes I think)

Dd did one in Halifax last summer.

Or they have launched a new set of training courses - theres one in Preston towards end of the year maybe you could tag a quick private onto that?

I m sorry my knowledge of dance is fairly limited. If its ballet ones your Dd struggles with but can do jazz ones I d think maybe due to needing to strengthen muscles in turnout???  Other than that the tip my dd uses is balance foam yoga block on ledge of raised leg ( whilst strengthening for tge position not whilst turning) and holding on to one with arms - also tells herself shes going to do one more - so says to herself I m going to do a quad and more often than not can secure a triple using this.

Sorry not much help. I thought might be balance/inner ear issue but I m guessing if can do jazz ones then that's not the case.

She has done one of Rosina’s workshops we travelled to London & back on Easter Monday. It helped with jazz ones

Unfortunately we can’t affird the hundreds of pounds train dates, studio hire & fee it would take to bring her here for a private & the only 1:1 availability is down south on weekday evenings which would mean taking Dd out of school during GCSE’s.

    Where are you based?

  15. 22 minutes ago, Picturesinthefirelight said:

Angel I agree, but no one seems willing or available or capable of helping.

She has asked & asked teachers for help but only ever gets general advice/corrections with no one actually looking at her & analysing the issues.

She feels confident in jazz, but ballet isn’t working.

Its doubles & triples that are the problem.

Pictures I would highly recommend getting in touch with Rosina Andrews and asking for workshop info or 1:1. Yeah she mainly does jazz but is fab at breaking down the mechanics of the movement. She has books out too.

My dd found a wobble board helped with core strength and foot strength - legs in ballet prep pirouette position and a turn board helped with spotting and control of arms to help stability.

  16. Hi all.

Odd one but - Dd has a new comp routine and teacher wants face lace down one side. So I ordered the official one. Its great - silicone type material that sticks to skin but Dd danced in it and it fell off.

Wondered if anyone on here has used liquid latex face paint with a stencil Before? And if so did it work??

I really need something that I can apply over full face of make up that I can remove relatively quickly...  Open to suggestions..

  17. My Dd has also had this 'perform' more when younger.

Dd was told to watch you tube - srarch novice dancers and professional dancers and see which was more interesting to watch - then asked to say why

Dd has never been a show off but has learnt that posture and emitting confidence to whoever is watching is key - not always a cheesy smile but getting your eyes to show you really enjoy what you re doing.

    Good luck

I have looked at the Buxton audition for my dd, she is interested in doing it but was wondering how her associate class would be with missing so many weekends?

My Dd finished JA thankfully in June and starts performing arts secondary school sept. We had said not taking on anything else while she settles into school but Dd missed last time we were able to do as was 3 days off being minimum age for audition.

I guess the only thing would be I know our JA didnt start til mid Sept so the first rehearsal weekend might at least be ok??

Regarding leotards - Miss Lewis has a problem with the colour purple, it actual makes her feel very ill. This doesn’t mean girls wearing purple don’t get in because they do,at the last EYB audition DD purple was the colour of a local school, the majority of them got in despite wearing purple  but if you can avoid it then do for Miss Lewis’s sake more than anything.

Thanks pointetoes thats helpful to know. Wouldnt want to make her feel sickly.

My DD wore a Bloch cap sleeved. Her class leotard is getting a bit faded bobbly so I wanted her to feel confident and smart. Others had their regular class leotards on though. On the email It says 12 year olds who are below grade 5 can audition for juniors so I think your daughter will definitely be in Juniors. Good luck!

    Thanks Tatasmum.

I was dreading them looking at grade 6 on her form ( takes grade 5 end april) and her being told to dance with those much older

  21. Hi for those who have been to the audition, what colour leotard did you wear and what style?

DD will be attending Buxton audition.

Also will she Def stay in with Junior group regardless of grade?  Shes 10 grade 5 and just started learning grade 6 too.

Dd will have taken grade 5 before audition.
