  1. No real surprises I think!

Though I think Matthew Ball being promoted to First Artist and not Soloist reflects that he has only done 1 full complete season with the company, as didn't he join midway through the 2013/2014 season?

I am surprised that Tierney Heap has not been promoted to First Artist considering that she has done Lilac Fairy, Queen of the Willis and is down to do Carmen next season.

  2. I agree, but I do think Tamara Rojo is trying to strengthen lower ranks in the company. Laurretta Summerscales and Shiori Kase seem an obvious choice for promotion there, but yes international names may still be needed to boost the company's profile. Maybe more poaching from Royal Ballet?

In an interview, Tamara Rojo did say that she would retire when ENB no longer needed her name to sell tickets

As the Royal Ballet now has no discernible overall style and the English/Ashton tradition has disappeared, on reflection the idea of bringing in dancers to perform certain roles doesn't seem such a bad one.

That is a strong statement, you only have to watch a video of Russian ballerina and an English ballerina to notice an obvious difference in style. At Christmas in 2014, my Mum and I went to watch a live relay of the Bolshoi's Nutcracker, and a few months before we had gone to watch the Winters Tale live. My Mum has a limited knowledge of ballet, and even she immediately picked up on the difference of style, noticing that English ballet was more lyrical, with more accurate footwork.

The English style has perhaps evolved over time, as technique has become more refined. It was never going to stay the same forever, as Frederick Ashton is no longer alive to choreograph new ballets!

Delighted to see Heap as Carmen. I thought she was fantastic in DGV last time round,

Is Salenko coming on full time contract or Principal Guest Artist as partner to MacRae?

Always enjoyed watching Tierney Heap on stage, and as for Iana Salenko, these questions will be answered when promotions are announced?

  5. It has just been announced on the ROH website that Melissa Hamilton will take leave of absence for the 2015/16 season to join SemperOper Ballett, Dresden and concentrate on particular works in their repertoire.

Also it says that she is going there as a principal.

Maybe Leanne Cope has inspired other dancers to try out ballet elsewhere, maybe out of frustration with Royal Ballet?

  6. I agree with previous comments Muntagirov and Takada are not a great match!  I thought it was just me!

I've only seen the Don Q rehearsal video of the two of them dancing together, and I wasn't convinced either! I've seen Muntagirov dance with Cojocaru, Daria and Fernanda Oliveria when he was at ENB and their chemistry was miles better!

Maybe when we finally see Muntagirov on stage with Lauren Cutherbertson, there might be some exciting chemistry there (Polunin replacement?)

  7. Did anyone else found it interesting that in the 2015/2016 trailer that O'Hare placed so much emphasis on giving younger dancers more of a chance? I think it will be fabulous season if he does carry that out, but I wonder if he is aware that a lot of his principals are of a similar age, and may fear a repeat of Benjamin, Galeazzi, Cojocaru, Kobborg and Rojo departure?

I noticed something flash up in there called 'Cheri'.  Have I missed something along the way in all the info disseminated so far?  What is that?

     on the website it says

    Chéri (Linbury Studio Theatre)

    By Martha Clarke

Martha Clarke’s impassioned work of dance-theatre, inspired by Colette’s novels, charts the doomed love affair between a woman and a man half her age in belle-époque Paris.

  10. I can't help wondering what the dancers' reaction is to the 2015/16 programme.

If I were a Principal, First Soloist or Soloist or, indeed, if I felt that i had a chance of proving myself worthy of promotion, I might feel that the pickings were rather lean. If I were a Corps member, I would be noticing the number of ballets with small numbers in the cast and hoping that my opportunities to get on stage were not going to be unduly limited or repetitive.

I disagree, I think the amount of mixed bills and repeated ballets might give more opportunities! Especially such a long run of The Nutcracker!

Also I think, from the amount of injuries this year across the ranks, next season's repetoire might reflect management trying to make things a bit easier.

  11. I hope they give some of the lower ranks a chance to tackle roles in R&J and the Winters tale. However the Nutcracker will provide a lot of opportunities! Fingers crossed for Matthew Ball as the Prince!

After the Rain is the Wheeldon they *didn't* do last time, isn't it? The one with the gorgeous pdd which I missed because it was only in a gala? If so, great, although I wonder about casting for an all-Wheeldon bill, given his fondness for using the same dancers for much of the time.

Yeah he does have his favourites! Hopefully roles are not just reserved for principals this time!

  12. I have to say that I found it strange that given the duration of this run of Swan Lakes and the fact that it must have been known at quite an early stage that it was unlikely that Cuthbertson would dance her allotted performances that no effort was made to prepare someone at soloist level for at least one performance. There was enough time. I would have thought that preparing an in house Odette /Odile was more important and more useful to the company than that dancer appearing in a new ballet.

     I agree!

I'm not familiar with the usual run of things, but do they understudy for roles in the Royal Ballet?

Claire Calvert and Hamilton have both performed extracts from Swan Lake for gala performances, and Choe has performed the role abroad.

I hate to say this, but does the constant drafting in of external talent show a lack of confidence in lower levels?
