Next season at Staatsballett Berlin: Sasha Waltz and Johannes Öhman presented the program of the first season under their joint artistic directorship at the Staatsballett Berlin.

    Premieres:

"Sleeping Beauty" by Marcia Haydée (her Stuttgart version from 1987, but with new décor by Jordi Roig, not the original one by Jürgen Rose)

"Plateau Effect" by Jefta van Dinther

Triple Bill Alexander Ekman (creation) | Sharon Eyal (creation) | "Sunny" by Emanuel Gat

Triple Bill -  Balanchine: "Theme and Variations", Forsythe: "Second Detail", Richard Siegal: "Oval" (creation)

Sasha Waltz will stage "SYMPHONIE MMXX", her first exclusive creation for the Staatsballett Berlin, with new music by Georg Friedrich Haas

    repertoire:

    "Giselle" by Patrice Bart

    "Jewels"

    "La Bayadère" by Alex Ratmansky

    "Nutcracker" by Yuri Burlaka/Vasily Medvedev

New to the company: Aya Okumura, who comes from Het Nationale, as Soloist  - I'm sure there will be some more changes

I think that’s a good mix...and they’ll be getting their money out their new (2018/19) productions. But, I’ll have to wait another year to see if they’ll ever celebrate the MacMillan era with a triple bill featuring Concerto and the original one-act Anastasia. I think they’d do My Brother, My Sisters well...failing that Elite Syncopations. I can but dream ...

  2. I’m starting to feel a little guilty about not seeing it again, but the pull wasn’t strong enough to get me trek from Berlin. I also thought he would have pruned the start and beefed up the initial meeting with his creation. That disappointed me. Re marketing...I’m a basic (?!) Friend and have liked ROH on Facebook and I’ve never received any “buy this” marketing. All I get (and it’s interesting) are bits and bobs - some nice stuff re Woolf Works was the last one!

  3. Well “Friends’ Booking” opens tomorrow, and there is still nothing up on the website. Well this friend is feeling more like a fiend, and I’m not sure whether membership is worth it after all. I wouldn’t mind if they billed it as a gala of surprises...I seem to remember way back when the jubilee programme or queen mum or Princess Margaret or someone was marketed as such. But surely they know the what’s and who’s by now?! It’s just 3 months away!!!

Guests for the Ballet week at Bavarian State Ballet:

Ashley Bouder from NYCB in Rubies/Jewels on 11. April

Natalia Osipova as Tatyana in Cranko’s Onegin on 13. April

Ivan Vasiliev as Petrucchio in Cranko’s Taming of the Shrew on 14. April

Anna Laudere and Edvin Revazov for Neumeier’s Lady of the Camellias (actually they will dance all performances, so no Munich couple will have danced in the main parts)

Booking starts on Monday 10.00 CET

Beg borrow or steal tickets for Osipova - her interpretation is thrilling and not  a little disturbing too. A very brave take on the role.

  5. I’m starting to be almost as disappointed with Zelensky as I am with Polunin. Even if he wants to remain loyal to him and still feels sorry for him, allowing him to dance is indulging him. I’m not sure how much he’s distanced himself and by association the company from Polunin’s views, or condemned them in the latest press release, but it’s not good. And I was shocked that the Times describes Zelensky as a friend of Putin which is depressing. Sigh...

That was the doctor, wasn't it?

I'm not exactly surprised at this, I must admit - I did think that after his last performance in Winter Dreams he was very emotional at the curtain call, and I wondered then if something was on the cards.  After all, he hasn't been cast in a lot this year, and he has been developing other projects outside the RB. I'm glad he's staying as Guest Principal for now, though, but I wish him all the best for the future.

I think it was the captain/drum major (not sure of exact title)

  7. I agree that his choreography is a possible issue, but he will have far bigger issues and challenges. I’m glad he’s name checked Ashton and MacMillan, and he’s right to look at those choreographers which are new and homegrown talent too. Good to see the pointer to women in dance. If he gets all of this done, then why not let him try a crowd pleaser one-act work (heavens that’s come over very patronising- sorry!)  which he can do well ...I didn’t like his Carmen although Tierney Heap was amazing in the role and almost saved it, but it just wasn’t right for the RB nor Covent Garden. But I think he learnt a lot from the experience.
