  1. Hello June Dancer

My Daughter is in year 7. I think from the final audition they offered 3 girls places, (two went to other schools) and 1 boy. There were another five girls who auditioned later and they offered places to. There are now 10 in year 7 but 3 of those are year 6 students who will repeat a year. Two year 7 boys and 5 year 7 girls. They keep classes small for year 7 (and maximum in any year is only 12) as they only offer if they see people they really want. They tend to add to the group in older years I think.

She loves it there, they do 3 hours of ballet a day, plus body conditioning on tues and thurs, tap and jazz on friday. Academics are very strong but there is a lot of homework! Most days she finishes around 5/6pm and they start at 8.30 mon wed fri, 8 for body con on tues and thurs. Pointe work some had started before September but some hadn't. The classical training is very strong, with great exiting destinations for upper schools each year. A lot of students are also Mid or senior associates with Royal. From year 8 there are also Saturday classes for those who aren't Royal associates.

Some students travel from both inside and outside London every day, and there is weekly boarding for those who are further afield. In year 7 there are 3 students who board currently.

Let me know if any more questions!

  2. I just want to say thanks for all your comments and advice, particulary about the value of hard work and determination for those without all the 'ideal' physical attributes.

(I can see it in my dd in fact - by doing her foot exercises every night, she is already showing this determination and willingness to apply herself, which will no doubt stand her in good stead for the future, whatever happens.)

And we are very fortunate to have a supportive, intelligent and level-headed dance teacher!!

And by doing her foot exercises every night she will be strengthening them and creating more flexibility in them in order to help her achieve her goals!

  3. Last year was 1600something applications but the deadline was in December. This year everyting is shifted ahead. Good luck to all of us  ;) !!

Odds are definitely better then this year! Expecting a longer wait for results though as they have lots more applications to look at.

  4. Appraisals are definitely a very real concern for all children at vocational school, and it is a stressful time for all.

At the moment in terms of places available I would have thought any information given out at prelim auditions would only be in terms of spaces because they have extra beds and didn't fill them all the previous year, or because someone has chosen to leave, as assessments have not taken place yet.

Good luck to all auditioning for schools and all who are already at schools and have appraisals coming up.

  5. Sounds like a thoroughly nasty teacher! I have been told by a previous head of a dance school we attended (left soon afterwards) that a previous student had no business going off to a top vocational school as was no ballet dancer - said dancer now dances with Hamburg ballet! Some teachers just don't understand progress, development and determination. I have seen it time and time again. It's easy to spot (and teach) the 'perfect' body, the great teachers recognise a person with 'enough' of the raw materials and are able to nurture that person, especially with a student that has bucket loads of determination.

DD's old teacher said that she had seen it year after year, the ones who were most naturally 'blessed' shall we say, with the physical attributes, if they didn't fully apply themselves were overtaken by a determined, thinking, hardworking student with enough of the required attributes.

  6. Won't they wait until all the auditions are finished on Sunday before any results come out? I know it's different for Associates as they have a number of places for each centre, but for WL I guess they want to see all dancers from all auditions before deciding who the lucky ones will be that are invited to Finals?

They normally release the results for years 8 and above before year 7 results from auditions. So Sunday is for year 7 entry. The first results usually out would be from Bath for years 8 and up as they are the first audition dates - think 11 Jan this year.

  7. That is a truly inspiring story, DanceFanatic! Your DD must have really impressed during the summer school.

It is interesting, in some schools in America I think they audition for full time training by inviting auditionees to a summer school so they can see how they perform over a week or two, rather than in a one hour class. For some children I am sure they may not be as good at impressing in a brief audition, but over a few days can really show their potential.

  8. Sunshine girl, my DD auditioned for Elmhurst the last 2 years for Y7 & Y8. Both times she got finals and the letter came in a DL sized envelope. It seems to be the finals results that come in different size envelops - she sadly got a no both times but then was invited to join Y8 after all in October so is there now and loving it. Wishing your DD all the best and hope she gets the result she wants.

Dance fanatic - what a fabulous outcome for your DD, and good for her for persevering. Was she on the reserve list this year and called off that in October? Or did she get straight no after finals?

  9. My DD would like to attend a good summer school this August (apart from her usual Ballet Cymru) but she decided she spends too much time away from home in her voc. school and doesn't won't to go to a residential SS anymore (so not Opes or YBSS as previously planned).

I understand ENBS SS is day time only?

Does anybody Remember what time classes started and finished every day? I understand they are held in school premises? There isn't much info on school website, just dates, fees and photos needed. I can't even find an application we need to send? Do I need to email them and ask for one?

How easy (or hard) it is to get a place? Reasonable or almost impossible like RBS SS? Any feedback from those who attended last year will be appreciated.

Edited to add that my DD would be in the younger group B.

Also worth looking at Ballet Boost in Pineapple? They do a day time only summer school. Lots of vocational students attended last year.

  10. I think at Tring finals last year the director of dance said something like 400 auditioned in total (for all years) and they brought back around 45/50 to finals (again for all years) - I know in my DD's final audition for year 7 there was a total of 20 girls.

  11. My dd is in year 7 at vocational school but doesn't board. She is up at 6.30 am and home 3 nights a week after 6, the other nights around 4.30. They do 3/4 hours of dance a day. They also get a lot of homework. She has to go to bed earlier than she used to but seems to thrive on the demands of it all. I think the fact she is getting to dance every day means she doesn't mind doing more homework and longer hours. I've never seen her enjoying school as much (or for that matter doing as well academically).

If it is something they love then I guess any tiredness doesn't matter. And the first half term she seemed more tired than she does now we are in the second half term. I think they adjust quickly.
