  1. Farfallina....it is about even more than that, according to various press reports. There have been bitter jealousies and rivalries ever since his appointment, with sides being taken and factions being formed...all very political. Allegedly. It sounds like a real nest of vipers...terrible stuff. If this is the way someone deems it acceptable to settle artistic or political differences, there is really not much hope for any of us.

I cannot believe what I'm reading. It's the cruelty and the barbarism of the attack which leaves me speechless. I cannot believe this is happening in our day and age... I desperately hope the doctors can save his eyesight

  2. Open arms, surely - but then I suspect He would also have expected them to give him a fair amount of attention when he was talking. Seriously, children's behaviour can be a problem during services if they're being so loud as to drown out the sermon or whatever.

Anyway, back to audiences: how about the guy who, admittedly in a theatre which was far from full, put his legs up on the back of the seat in front of him?!

Wow, now they're bringing movie manners to the theaters ! And I thought the buckets full of popcorn at the Bolshoi cinema transmissions were annoying.....

  3. good point, Janet. I didn't think of the emotionally touching ballets when posting this. During them I'm busy fighting to hold back the tears depending on who is dancing.

I probably had the more fun ones in mind like Don Q - there I think both dancers and audience can really give it it all. Not all of the smaller parts will be back for the final curtain call. So, I like to believe they appreciate instant feedback which I'm happy to supply.

Must have been 2007 when Osipova/Vasiliev danced DQ in Munich - sheere excitement on stage and among the audience - at least 4 curtain calls on the intervalls and massive applause at the end. Then two nights later it was Alexandrova/Filin's turn and the Munichs delivered only a polite level of applause during the performance and you could tell the dancers were slightly irritated - I thought "oh no - they don't like it !!!" - I was so wrong - this audience saved it all for last - enormous applause at the end - people just couldn't stop - they would leave through one door just to come back in through another door and continue applauding...

I'm not really sure which one I enjoyed more, but I think I still rather go for immediate reaction...

Katherine, I love that littel story - didn't know it. Guess Nurejev probably is on the other end of this scale - just imagining he loved the audience response...

  4. Last time the Bolshoi was in London I watched one of their cello players texting like crazy - he only put his device away when the conductor was ready to start the performance. The sound of the last note prior to the break was still in the air when that guy got back to his toy....

Why does it bother some people when the audience applaudes the moment they see something exciting in a ballet ?

  5. Cinemas seem to start noticing that their is a "market" for these transmissions. In our cinema the Bolshoi is always almost sold out. I love their live transmissions - I think Katerina Novikova presents it in such a charming way - I just wish they would finally interview Filin during the break

I wonder how they decide who will dance the live transmissions - must be at least the third time in a row that Skvortsov is on...

  6. Sue Shiffrin-Cassidy wife of singer David Cassidy runs that business out of Florida for some of the english speaking countries. She is something like a VP - they are a Swiss company and operate like Avon - not selling in shops. I think the UK also belongs to her area of responsibilty. Check her out on Facebook

  7. Hi Janet, thank you very mch for the kind welcoming. I used to be a little more active in the old forum, but fell into some kind of state of shock over Sergei Filin's retirement as a dancer. Gradually I'm overcoming that and him being the new Artistic Director is helping me to come to terms with it ;)

I'm not such an expert that I could write a sophisticated review that would do Zakharova justice - all I can say she was marvellous and it was sheer joy to watch. It was amazing how she would fit in and stand out at the same time dancing with a company which is not quiet her league.

April 2013 Munich will have the Mikhailovsky over for two nights of Sleeping Beauty - I hope to see Osipova / Vassiliev / Sarafanov there.

Next stop will be Amsterdam though for the premiere of Wheel don's Cinderella.
