No doubt the full facts will emerge and at present we don't know them.

But it does make me think how very wise it is not to allow glass into the auditorium and I hope they stick with the rule and police it even more carefully (I know they do  - I have often seen people being turned back with glasses)- but it  is perhaps easier to sneak a glass into the door to the slips. Someone could have been hurt. I wish other theatres would take note.

When I left the amphitheatre there was a lot of glass near the doors, including on the floor - small tumblers etc, so with or without anyone smashing glass, that alone was serious a trip hazard.

So, since people have asked what happened tonight:

    - announcement that Ashley Dean was being replaced by Meaghan Grace Hinkis in Danses Concertantes and by Isabella Gasparini in Requiem (this is showing in the cast sheet currently on the ROH website anyway, but I guess it must have been a late enough replacement that an earlier sheet had already been posted);

    - Kevin O'Hare appears front of curtain to explain that Reece Clarke has been taken ill and advised not to dance, and that because of the complexity of the choreography this has entailed knock-on casting changes for the dancers' safety (in particular since it presumably involved Serrano changing from dancing Andres to being the Drum Major, and therefore Benjamin Ella needing to step in as Andres).  I was disappointed not to see Osipova and Donnelly, but in fact I think this may have been the best performance that Sambé and Hayward gave (although I must admit to getting distracted by extraneous events).

    - Ah, yes, those extraneous events.  During Different Drummer, it sounded like some glass smashing somewhere amphitheatre right, then several bouts of loud shouting - unclear, but including a few f-bombs - during the later part of the ballet.  I suspect it was loud enough to be heard on stage.  I gather someone else fainted down in the Stalls Circle as well.

    - and then Hirano's injury during Requiem :(  Not a good evening :(

Yes, after the unnerving + unpredictable commotion during Different Drummer, came out Piazza exit + walked around to Bow Street + saw approximately 6 Met police officers restraining someone on the pavement outside the main entrance with other patrons looking on. The person was resisting + making the same loud noises as could be heard in the amphitheatre, at that point I decided to go home, but hoped they were able to deescalate the situation as it looked pretty volatile.

Blake Works II has already been performed in Britain. It was made for Tiler Peck, with Brooklyn Mack, Lex Ishimoto and Roman Mejia, supported by funding from CLI Studios. Ms Peck brought it to Sadler's Wells in March last year with the original cast.

You're thinking of Blake Works V which he made for the ballet company of La Scala in Milan in May 2023. (He made Blake Works  III for Boston Ballet in 2022 and Blake Works IV for Dance Theater of Harlem shortly before working with La Scala.)

Unfortunately none of the Blake Works ballets are scheduled for the Forsythe programme but it will be even better to have two ballets of his that are new to recent audiences- a new creation and New Suite.

Thank you, yes you're right I'm thinking of V!

  4. I was an usher for the Christmas period at ROH a decade ago + remember we used to have to push the marketing when ticket sales were very low at the Linbury via then Twitter etc. However at the theatre I now usher at, we stopped using TodayTix last year because of big issues with them publishing the wrong start time (!) + also selling duplicate seats. I can see + have seen how ROH are trying to reach out to new audiences, especially to those who are tech savvy to fill the empty seats + make bigger profits, I'm not for or against third party sellers, so will be interesting to see how it pans out for ROH.

However, one thing I did notice recently that really shocked me was how ROH is now re-posting/sharing stories on their official Instagram from the public, not from influencers or anyone in the public eye in particular, but those who've tagged ROH in their story. The story I saw the other night, showcased an 'evening out to The Nutcracker' with a really explicit backing track. I first watched it with the sound off + then turned it on + I didn't really know what to think at that point! I'm all for new music + new audiences enjoying ROH for the first time, but I definitely felt this was a low blow + wasn't sure if the person handling ROH social media had listened to the track before they pressed share!

  5. Interested to see how this media exposure will pan out in the long term...impact on budding young dancers, their parents/guardians, teachers of pre-vocational students wanting to signpost, all those working in these institutions or those who aspire to, the countless alumni, the sponsors, those above that + the fee paying audience.

Hope further safeguarding concerns are raised to highlight the need for change. Personally I had a place one of the other elite schools (not RBS/Elmhurst) at 11, but didn't go due to lack of funding, continued to train pre-vocationally outside of academic school until I was 16 when I decided I didn't want to continue on this path. Most sad, almost ALL of my ballet friends, most went onto vocational school at 16, yet didn't gain a place in a classical ballet company + are no longer in the industry or too damaged by their experience to even live a normal life in the UK, a lot moved abroad. Similarly, I personally know many people ranging from 5-30+ years older than me who attended either RBS/Elmhurst + experienced the most harrowing abuse, yet they were either too scared to speak out, never listened to OR believed + have struggled on many different levels, trying building a life for themselves either within the arts or outside.

Also, try doing a search of this Forum to pick up other dancers' tips. If a quick Tube trip to Waterloo (straight down the Northern line from Euston) is not out of the question, have a look at Central Nights, the Central School of Ballet's adult/open programme. Some excellent teachers. Also a 3 stop trip on the Piccadilly line from Kings Cross to Covent Garden and Pineapple Studios for Christina Mittelmaier's and Hannah Frost's classes.

Thank you, yes their old studio location would have been ideal, but Piccadilly Line in rush hour is a no no as I work two jobs, so need to stay in the area! Already take classes at Base Studios, just wondered what good quality dance is left in the King's Cross/Euston area, as there seems to be a lot of empty studio space, but not so much expertise anymore! Will check out Central Nights again to see what's on offer this term, thanks again.

Have a look at the Open class programme at The Place. I've not done class there, but I'm sure others in this Forum have. And they have some wonderful teachers there, as well as gorgeous studios.

Thank you, yes I've taken classes here too, just always looking for something other than contemporary or ballet, but see they do Street Dance now too...will check it out

  8. As everything is moving so fast in the dance world + following a negative experience before end of summer at what looked like a very suitable class, I would greatly appreciate if anyone had any good recommendations for drop-in evening dance classes (17:30-20:00) within walking distance from King's Cross/St Pancras (15 minutes max).

Interested in all styles of dance, as well as pilates, yoga, gyrokinesis etc + anything interesting for my friend + I, both adult dancers. Intermediate/Advanced level.

    Thank you!
