DD and I have been to visit Queen Alexandra House today and have put her name down for a room there.

Was wondering if there was anyone else with experience of a DD living there whilst at ENBS?

It seemed safe and secure, if a bit shabby and old fashioned, but a fabulous area to live in. Anyone got any advice, pointers etc?

My DD lived at QAH for her 3 years at ENBS and she was very happy there. They tend to put the ENBS students on the same floor, so that they can be together to socialise, cook etc. I liked that it had someone at the desk 24 hours, so that it was very secure. The food was excellent, although not always healthy, so they have to be disciplined on what they eat. After the first year, my DD's room was upgraded, which was fantastic and I believe that they are slowly renovating all the rooms. She had the small room, which was fine, as they are not in their rooms much. The staff are very friendly and caring of all the residents too.

Please send me a private message if you need to know anything else. Hope this helps. LTD

  5. I was at the working stage rehearsal on Wednesday evening and wow what an evening. The first piece In The Middle, Somewhat Elevated, was beautiful danced, although for me it went on a little too long and the music was not really my cup of tea. Standout performer was Precious Adams. The second piece Adagio Hammerklavier was beautiful. The 3 couples were Fernanda Oliveira, James Forbat, Laurretta Summerscales, Fabien Reimair, Tamara Rojo, Isaac Hernandez. The piano playing was exquisite. Finally Le Sacre du printemps with Francesca Velicu as 'The Chosen One'. I was not sure how I would feel about this piece, but OMG it was so emotional. The commitment from the dancers was amazing. In short, Graham Watts Instagram post sums it up "gorgeous, life-affirming dance". LTD

  6. My DD was a JA from year 4 and applied for WL summer school each year and never gain a place. Needless to say she was accepted into WL and spent 5 years there, gained the RBS Upper School SS award and is now dancing in one of the top companies.

What I'm trying to say is that SS acceptance is by no means an indication of future achievements. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with what they've achieved already upon application, body type (well maybe a little) or if your a JA. My DD is living proof of this.

  7. So with the auditions process well on the way and heading to finals and the decision stage we have reached a crisis.  DD has always done well academically and following feedback from the final parents' evening of primary school last week we are concerned about the academic records of vocational schools.  A conversation at the weekend with someone who knew two children leave vocational  schools age 14 due to parents being unhappy about the academics has really put DH off agreeing that we should continue down this route.  I have struggled to find information that is up-to-date and/or impartial about how well DCs do academically at vocational school .  Can anyone give me an insight into how good the teaching/results are at the big four?

Here is a link to The Royal Ballet School academic result:

    https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/school/102947

There is a search function for you to use for other schools you require information for. Please bear in mind that there are DC's at vocational schools of varying academic ability, as they are taken on for their dancing potential and not on academic merit. When my DD was as WL, the brighter students definitely fulfilled their academic potential, with some students not moving to upper schools and instead, moving on to further education at top academic schools. I also felt that for the less academic DC, due to the small class sizes, the school allowed them to possibly achieve more than they would have done at a 'normal' secondary school.

We turned down a place at one of the top grammar schools in the UK and felt that our DD still fulfilled her academic potential, but it was a hard choice, as you never know whether they will get assessed out of the school. We were one of the fortunate ones though.

I hope this helps and good luck. LTD
