  1. Isabelle Ciaravola's farewell is February 28th so not next month.  (it was previously scheduled on March 5th but moved to 28th) I wished I could see her farewell performance, it should be so emotional.

I also watched the performance of Onegin with Isabelle Ciaravola and guest Evan McKie on February 4th and 8th. Herve Moreau had an injury so he had to be replaced for the first two performances but good that now he is back. The performance I saw was also so magnificent, I saw Isabelle's Tatiana when she was promoted etoile 2009 but she has matured so much since then, very sweet and adolescent at first and really lost into her emotions at the last pas de deux, torn between her two loves. And Evan McKie is the best current Onegin in the world, embodying the spirit of Pushkin.

A little review of that performance by me here.

  2. I watched the premiere of Bintley's Prince of the Pagodas at National Ballet of Japan in 2011. It is a lovely piece, a great gift to the Japanese audience as much of the story had paid homage to Japan, and drawing the resurrection of a nation badly hurt, thus referring to the 3.11 earthquake in Japan (which Bintley himself experienced)

The artwork by Rae Smith was brilliant, and also the choreography was much fun and entertaining. I am so happy that this work will also be performed at BRB, and the two dancers Ayako Ono and Yudai Fukuoka from Japan will be guesting.

Here are some clips of Prince of The Pagodas, rehearsal footage, Bintley's interview and presentation of the artwork.

  3. Good news on Dancing Times

    http://www.dancing-times.co.uk/news/item/1384-maryinsky_ballet_london_2014

The season will run from July 28 to August 14, opening with Romeo and Juliet. The company will also dance a triple bill of The Firebird, Marguerite and Armand and Concerto DSCH, Swan Lake and a George Balanchine double bill of A Midsummer Night’s Dream – the first time the company has danced this work in the UK – and Apollo. The season will end with the London premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s Cinderella.

  4. I wonder how the people in this thread will react to Marie Agnes Gillot's "Sous Apparence" at Paris Opera Ballet, with women in bare chests and tied up in ropes, and men wearing pointe shoes.

Though this was not a successful work.

I don't think it is an exploitation of women concerning them dancing with their naked breasts, European audience are used to those things. Bella Figura is such a beautiful work and it has to be nude.

  5. I should also have said (in the light of Luke Jennings' recent piece in The Guardian) that it was disappointing that among the nine choreographers featured in the programme there was not a single woman.

In the Made in Germany program performed in Stuttgart, they did feature a piece called Symph by a female choreographer, Katarzyna Kozielska who is also a demi-soloist in the company. Bridget Breiner, former principal with the company has been nominated for this year's Faust Prize for her choreography so they do have female choreographers. Wished they could show one in London.

  6. For instance, Sue Jin Kang is awarded the title of Kammertänzerin, (chamber dancer) which enables her to work in a longer term than others at the company. (There's also the title of Kammersänger for opera singers)

I have a friend in the opera company and she said that as there were many cases that the renewal of contract was terminated at 13 or 14 years, the management were criticized for that and as a result the renewal termination began to happen earlier, such as 10 years. Not sure it is same with the ballet company but likely the same thing happening.
