  1. Natascha Mair is a beautiful and lyrical, lovely ballerina, also fabulous in contemporary as well as classical. She is a native of Austria and grown up at the Vienna State Ballet school, Manuel Legris nurtured her. She often appeared in the Vienna Philharmonic New Year concerts and is quite on the smaller side with a beautiful face. You can see her as one of the Odalisques in Vienna State Ballet’s Le Corsaire DVD.

I have seen her several times live, as Gulnare in Le Corsaire and Swanilda in Coppelia, as well as Esmeralda and contemporary works. She has some very good lyrical qualities as well as beautiful feet.

Milwaukee Ballet streaming Michael Pink's Dracula!!!!  Many longstanding friends of Northern Ballet have very fond memories of this production:

Japan's NBA Ballet has this ballet in their repertoire, and they were supposed to perform this summer with guests Ryoichi Hirano as the Dracula and Sarah Lamb. But of course this was sadly cancelled. They did the first act in February with Hirano, and he had such carisma. Hope this one will happen again here.

Have to agree with Jeannette there was just too much "class" for me.  I much prefer interviews and seeing actual pieces of rep danced.  However in fairness they were probably limited this year as to what they could do.  I will go back and watch some of the Bolshoi interviews - Anna Turashvilli really is a great English speaker and is always lovely at stage door so it was great to see her.  I will also look for the DonQ from HK and Japan.

here is the National Ballet of Japan section, with Don Quixote rehearsal (Act 3 is a run-through, coached by Miyako Yoshida. don't miss Yui Yonezawa's superb fouettes) and some experts from their new ballet Ryuguu the Turtle Princess. Available till November 2nd morning.

They have successfully finished 6 performances of Don Quixote and tomorrow is the last performance. Tonight's performance will be streamed later but you have to pay for it.

Wow...such a contrast between how the Russians and the Japanese are coached!

Really enjoying Tokyo Ballet rehearsing DonQ, and so pleased to see the company dancing together as a unit, instead of separated by bubbles.

It is not Tokyo Ballet but the National Ballet of Japan, currently lead by former RB principal Miyako Yoshida. Tokyo Ballet is a private company but has a longer history so maybe more well known in Europe.

  5. This is a beautiful creation by Paul Lightfoot, ex Artistic Director of NDT.  He lost his father during lockdown without being allowed into the hospital to say goodbye because of travel restrictions, so he began working remotely on a piece to process his emotions. And here is the result,  a powerful, moving tribute to those affected by the pandemic. It can be seen both on Royal Danish Ballet's website and vimeo, danced by Sebastian Haynes of NDT, filmed in Denmark.

  6. In Japan the regulations of social distancing in theatres and classical concert halls, cinemas have been loosened on September 19th. Now they allow 100% seating if safety measures have been taken. (such as audience and staff wearing mask are compulsory, temperature measured at the entrance and disinfection of hands)   We still have 300~500 people diagnosed as COVID-19 patients every day, and a couple of months ago, a cluster occurred in a small playhouse where some play had been performed. (many actors and some of the audience got the virus, probably spread at rehearsals and at the stage door)

Practically, very few theatres and concert halls have loosened their regulation at this point, we will see what will happen. In this weekend Tokyo Ballet will do Don Quixote, next month several full length performances such as Sleeping Beauty by Asami Maki Ballet, Le Corsaire by K-BAllet Companyand another Don Quixote from National Ballet of Japan will occur but at this point all of them with 50% capacity.
