  1. Does Lady MacMilillan  have any say in the matter of which performances are released on DVD? If she does have some say  in the matter perhaps she thought that Dupont's performance of Manon was of more general interest,

I assume you're being sarcastic coz if true it would reveal a worrying lack of judgement on her part. And yes, the  Lamb/Muntagirov broadcast from 2014 would be a very welcome addition to the recorded repertoire!

  2.  I hadn't heard of MDT before - I don't suppose they're anything to do with the late lamented Music Discount Centre?  Is there some easy way of narrowing down the DVDs on offer?  I can't see any categories for ballet, contemporary dance and so on.

It's a small company, been around for about 16 years, one I automatically check when searching for a best price. If you type "ballet" into its search box that'll give an idea of the kind of prices they offer. They don't stock many of the arts disks  but when they do the discount, even with the postage, can be up to about £6/7 cheaper on the £29.99 blu-ray price.

  3.  I seem to remember (it was a long time ago!) that Frankenstein was promised for October?

My understanding now is that this is provisionally scheduled for around March/April next year. Good news if confirmed but a long time to wait! No sign so far of Amazon discounting their arts discs but I continue to hope!

  4. The ROH shop has the Linbury Elizabeth DVD for release on 28th October at £24.99, a lot to look forward to, as Amazon are so expensive now it will be cheaper for me to buy things at the ROH with no postage and the Friends 10%.

Me too - I'm saving up for a big splurge on my next trip down - and have now added the Elizabeth DVD to the list so thanks for that.

  5. Finally there are more recent recordings which have not been made available to the general public such as .... the Bussell farewell performance which included a pretty good Symphonic Variations and Song of the Earth. How did the company manage to miss a trick there is beyond me.

And Hear Hear to this as well. My recorder failed during the BBC relay of Mr Bussell's farewell performance and all my pleas to Opus Arte fell on deaf ears!

  6. .....  the black+white Sibley/Dowell Dream which I presume was a Margaret Dale production :(

Of Mgt Dale’s nine (?) original cast film adaptions for the BBC, not only Ashton’s Dream but also his Les Rendezvous and Monotones remain to be restored and released. I don't have a complete list but I think Petrouchka (with Nerina) and Ninette de Valois' Checkmate and Rake's Progress also? Hopefully  ICA have at least some in their sights.

  7. I think the Friends discount is for a couple of Saturdays before Christmas.

I just paid £29.99 for my blu ray disc.

Thank you billboyd. Certainly can't wait till Xmas so will order from the shop. Better them than Amazon!

PS. This is completely outside the remit of the forum but I am so excited to see that this historic BBC recording of another famous earlier Dream, so long only available in smudgy copies, has been restored by the brilliant ICA company, that have given us so many of the early BBC Margaret Dale ballet recordings, that I can't resist sharing it:

  8. I  can't believe the ROH is the best option for The Two Pigeons, does anyone know if Friends get 10% off everything in the shop now?

Does anyone know the answer to Beryl H's question please? There doesn't seem to be an option if one books on line but I wonder if a discount is offered to friends who buy direct at the shop?

  9. I see these are listed on the Presto Classical site in both DVD and blu-ray formats as forthcoming over the next few weeks. I don’t know many of them but mostly they seem to be re-issues so I guess they will be familiar to most. Hopefully the blu-rays at least will be an improvement on earlier releases. The last three have already been mentioned on this thread as available from Amazon:

The Art of Patrice Bart - La Petite Danseuse de Degas

The Art of John Neumeier - Death in Venice

The Art of Patrice Bart - The Nutcracker

The Art of Mats Ek – Giselle

The Art of Hans van Manen - Six Ballets

Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring & The Firebird

The Art of Jiri Kilian - Three Ballets

The Art of Jiri Kilian - Car Men

The Art of Angelin Preljocaj – Siddharta

The Art of Petipa & Gorsky - Don Quichot

The Art of Marius Petipa – Raymonda

    O'Regan: MataHari

  10. .Don't expect the same performance standard and style from POB as the RB in Manon. This was Dupont's farewell performance. IMHO her sophistication meant she was never convincing in this role. If you dig around on YT you might find it.

    But can't comment on SB.

Thank you Stucha - that was very helpful. You were right - I have found a full length copy of Dupont's Farewell performance of Manon on You Tube and also a  thoughtful review of that performance by Rachel Mann in Dance Tabs which, taken together with the comment and reading between the lines, bears out your assessment.

So that has saved me some money. Thank you. Haven't found anything yet on the Salenko Sleeping Beauty with her husband.  And I'm still waiting for Amazon to do the decent thing and discount the Opus Arte Rhapsody/Two Pigeons disk!

  11. Just noticed several upcoming releases now on Amazon.

    - Manon with Aurélie Dupont and Roberto Bolle. DVD link here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01K819G8W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9MaZxbVAW2KKX

    - Sleeping Beauty with Iana Salenko and Marian Walter. DVD link here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IAC0P5O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FRaZxbP53K6JK

Both due to be released on the 14th October.

Thanks I hadn't spotted these. Life is becoming very expensive! Can anyone offer any advice re these productions/performances please?

  12. I'm sure I've asked this before but is there a recording of Ashton's Dream out there somewhere?

    Linda

I'll be very surprised if we don't see a release on DVD/Blu-Ray by Opus Arte after the live cinema relay by the Royal Ballet of Ashton's The Dream/ Symphonic Variations/Marguerite and Armand on 7th June next year. It will be interesting to see who gets to dance the various roles! Will Polunin finally be accepted back into the fold to dance M&A with Osipova? Ironic if so, since my memory is that it was during rehearsals for The Dream that he walked out on the Company! I'm not sure though that I see Osipova as Marguerite? And I'm certainly looking to see Ms Hayward as Titania during this run though perhaps not in the live relay?

  13. Way ahead of release the blu ray will be nearly £40 then it corrects to £29.99 and then you start getting real discounts .... and I am sure it will come down further.  Not sure why this happens but I only see it with Opus Arte releases.

Well you were right about the price reverting to the Opus Arte retail price! So far so good. I think I'll hang on for a while to see if further discounts materialise!

  14. In an interview listed in the Links last Sunday, the new Bolshoi Ballet director Makhar Vaziev, reflecting on the Bolshoi residency at the Royal Opera that has just ended, commented: “We spoke with the Hochhausers [Lilian and Victor Hochhauser, the permanent producers of the Bolshoi’s London tours], and they want to ask us back again. It’s more likely to be 2019, because we already have tours planned in the meantime”.

This has left me speculating wildly about possible residencies in the summers of 2017 and 2018. I assume and hope the Mariinsky will fill one of the two slots though I haven’t heard any announcement as yet. But what of the other slot? Can we hope to see a different Company I wonder?

  15. Amazon prices for ballet and opera are rising sharply, can't believe the ROH is the best option for The Two Pigeons, does anyone know if Friends get 10% off everything in the shop now?

Amazon have just listed their blu-ray price for Two Pigeons - £38.36 compared with the ROH price of £29.99!!!!

  16. In my opinion, no. I think Manon pdd was particularly bad (but not the worst), in a modest gala overall. I think there are some clips of the gala on youtube: maybe you can try to check there if it's the case to buy it for your collection.

Thank you annamicro - that's very helpful. I shall certainly take your advice and give this one a miss.  Both I (and my wallet) are much indebted to you.

  17.

Thanks for this heads up Naomi M - I certainly hadn't seen it coming. I'm assuming this is the 2015 Gala with our Melissa dancing the Manon Act 1, Scene 2 pas de deux with Claudio Coviello and have been looking for reviews with little success. I can't remember any comment on the forum - can I ask please if anyone was there or has any advice to offer? Would it be a worthwhile buy?
