  1. For me the absolute highlight of Jewels was Rubies, with Andrey Merkuriev and Kristina Kretova.   They showed the stunning technique and energy required to fully master Balanchine's complex choreography and the twists in Stravinsky's music - requiring angular shapes, high extensions, and a terrific level of stamina.   Rubies lifted the mood of the audience to rapturous applause at curtain.   Fantastic!

  2. Anyone know where we can find out the cast changes following Maria Alexandrova's injury - the Hochhauser website has nothing about cast at all and the Bolshoi link above has not been refreshed.  I am particularly interested in Swan Lake 10th August evening.

Lantratov did not dance Bluebird last night due to a foot injury, but he hopes to be fit by 10th... Wishing him a speedy recovery.

  3. Caspermil, I wish I could go but I will be in Birmingham bidding farewell to some favourite dancers.

Please report back when you have seen the performance.

Hi, Janet!   Just to say that the cast list for Ravenna is not current, it looks like a programme that's previously been performed.   Andrey Merkuriev is definitely not dancing, which is a pity as I have booked.   I'm trying to get an up to date programme, will let you know.   x

  4. Bloomsbury Theatre have just advised that Hamlet has been cancelled due to 'on-going technical difficulties on the part of the organisers'.   Full refunds being offered...

"Finally, anyone hankering for a sighting of ex-Royal Ballet wunderkind Sergei Polunin, back in Russia since he left the company almost a year ago, will want to note his starring role in Peter Schaufuss's Hamlet (at London's Bloomsbury Theatre, 15-24 May) which unusually promises dance-drama laced with spoken text. Schaufuss has, let's say, interesting form. Consider yourself warned."

I think Midnight Express will be adventurous enough for me, don't know about this one. Have watched a trailer and it seems like a very odd concept. Has anyone seen a previous staging? Any views?

  5. It looks too good to be true and of course at this stage it is, one change that I booked for is SB where Maria Alexandrova is replaced by Ekaterina Krysanova, I don't mind at all, and I hope Olga Smirnova still dances SL on the 15th, might have to swap if not(last time the ROH were okay with swapping one Bolshoi for another, any production). Since I booked all 3 Flames the last night looks wonderful, Maria Alexandrova and Andrei Merkuriev!!! Thanks for putting this up, I couldn't understand the Hochhauser page.

Merkuriev on the last night - AMAZING!!!

  7. Russian Ballet Icons Gala 2013 dedicated to Vaslav Nijinsky

On Sunday 10 March the Russian Ballet Icons Gala, this year dedicated to the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky, will take place at the London Coliseum.

The gala will include performances from the best living masters of ballet, dancing pieces from this iconic dancer’s repertoire as well as classic and contemporary dedications to one of the greatest dancers the world has ever known.

Born March 12 1890 in Kiev, Vaslav Nijinsky is often regarded as the greatest male dancer of the 20th Century. He made his debut with the Mariinsky Theatre in 1907 and with his spectacular leaps and unrivalled grace, he was an immediate success, dancing leading roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, and Sleeping Beauty, often with Anna Pavlova and Tamara Karsavina.

He travelled to Paris (1909) and, as premier danseur in Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe, was the first to dance the leading roles in Petrushka, Les Sylphides, Scheherazade, and The Spectre of the Rose, all choreographed by Fokine, and in ballets he himself choreographed – The Afternoon of a Faun (1912), The Rite of Spring (1913, for which Stravinsky composed the famous score), Jeux (1913), and Till Eulenspiegel (1916). His status as a legend and icon is unsurpassed in the history of dance.

    Svetlana Zakharova

    See more at:

    russianballeticons.com

Note – The programme is subject to change and may incur additions and alterations.

No Kristina Shapran, Inaki Urlezaga, Svetlana Zakharova, Igor Zelensky or Sergei Polunin.   But there were at least seven additions to the original ENO website cast list, including Thiago Soares/Marianela Nunez, and the wonderful Bolshoi Principal Ekaterina Krysanova.

  8. Confirmation from the cast sheet this weekend that the Bolshoi's original Lost Illusions has been replaced by La Sylphide, so I hope that makes you happy.

    Current dates are:

    30th September - La Sylphide

    21st October - Swan Lake

    25th November - Pharoah's Daughter

    16th December - Nutcracker

    27th January - La Bayadère

    10th February - Don Quixote

31st March - The Rite of Spring (hopefully with something else, to justify the £15 price tag!)

12th May - Romeo & Juliet (whose? I'm losing track)

Swan Lake, Nutcracker and Don Q are all recorded, not live.

According to a post on screen at yesterday's DQ, The Rite of Spring is being replaced (in some cinemas only) by Esmeralda.   Check with your local cinema - Clapham definitely not showing an alternative as I got a refund on RoS yesterday.
