No-one here has commented on the panel but I am concerned that, in my view at least, there is no-one currently associated with ballet, as opposed to dance. Obviously Deborah Bull is a former RB principal and then involved with the Linbury for some years but now has a much broader role in the arts and HE. Spalding, although he does put on some ballet at the Wells, prioritises dance more generally and although there are now links between ENB and SWT the emphasis is very much on contemporary ballet. There is a representative of the Arts Council but many of us have doubts about the way ACE appears to be emasculating classical ballet. I would have liked a representative of a UK ballet company to be involved. Christopher Hampson, AD of Scottish Ballet, would have been an excellent choice (assuming that he isn't planning on applying).

Do you really believe a current Artistic Director of one of the few UK ballet companies will be appropriate to choose the Artistic Director of a competitor ballet company? So if, for instance, Coca Cola needs a new CEO should Pepsi’s CEO be on the choosing panel?

That will be up to the Company. Tamara herself has previously eschewed fuss and wasn’t really in favour of what the audience and dancers arranged at the RAH when Daria Klimentova was leaving.

But I agree; it’s nice to celebrate someone’s achievements with a proper send off. The RB is now doing that well.

I wonder where you got that from. I believed Rojo has always encourage anyone´s achievements with a proper send off. After all, it is her who introduced direct stage announcements when promoting a dancer to either Principal or Lead Principal categories

It was obvious McCormick was being set up to win with the choice of pdd and the contemporary piece. It was a bit of a flashback to 2 years ago which anointed Corrales a star and although not quite as striking a performance, he will fill the virtuoso gap quite nicely I’m sure.

I really enjoyed Vowles and Garrett’s pdd from William Tell. Garrett has a wonderful sense of humour on stage which was shown in both his pieces and he is definitely one to watch. Vowles is such a pretty dancer and makes the little beats look like a breeze and loved her contemporary performance.

Wasnt keen on Harlequinade at all for these dancers as a classical piece but Adams’ talent is evident. Her contemporary piece was not my cup of tea  but she was incredible.

I do do like this event as a chance to get to know the dancers- shame there are no filmed insights as with the Royal Ballet which really help to build a connection to the company. I love this event but felt that despite being a wonderful piece of PR, especially with the dancers dotted around in the audience, it just wasn’t as exhilirating as in previous years, potentially due to the choices made in terms of choreography.

Such a mean comment about McCormick! Can you prove what you are saying? I don’t understand how a ballet forum allows such vile assertions

Yes, William Moore and Alexander Jones, both graduated the same year als Xander Parish and Liam Scarlett from RBS, if I remember right. Great dancers - tall, good actors, musical, fine technique, handsome guys. I could never understand why Mrs. Mason did not do everything to get them into the Royal Ballet - good for Stuttgart :)

William Moore, one ot the best dancer-actors I've seen in a very long time, is leaving with Stuttgart resident choreographer Christian Spuck for Zurich Ballet at the end of the season, where Spuck will follow Heinz Spoerli as director. Big mistake for Moore, if you ask me, because he got every role he could wish for at Stuttgart, he was in most creationes by choreographers working there and hugely popular with the audience.

Also dancing at Stuttgart: Elisa Badenes from Spain, Prix de Lausanne and YAGP winner, who trained at the RBS and danced her first Odette/Odile in December - an incredible performance, better than all the senior ballerinas of the company. Calm and serene, not a little bit nervous, wonderful arms, and a very dangerous, sensual black swan. Like she was born to dance that role - I could not believe it, she was 19 years old!

Strange the RB did not keep her. By what you are seing I wish I could see her dance

    Goodness me, how sad.

I do not see any reason why dancers would invent what they stated in this article. This really changed my perception of Tamara Rojo.             How is this possible in a 21st century ballet company?

What makes you think it's true? Have you never seen before peoples’ reputation destroyed to find out, after months or, even, years that everything was a fake?

  6. It is inconceivable that a veteran journalist like @TeresaGuerreir2 in her article about the @ENBallet is unable to distinguish between opinions and facts. In every ballet company there are dancers who do not agree with how they are evaluated by their artistic directors. The only fact in these libels is that Tamara and Isaac are togethre, the rest are opinions sent from the cowardice of anonymity and, therefore, whoever publishes them without verifying the opinion of those denounced is doing tendentious and sensationalist journalism or pursuing shameful spurious goals.

Uruguay?  Well, it makes a change from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Cuba ...

Doesn’t this sound a bit musty ethnicism? Ciro Tamayo is from Spain and is a principal Dancer at National Ballet of Uruguay (SODRE) under the Artistic Direction of Julio Bocca.

Going through the list of 69 dancers I only find: One Mexican and 3 Brazilian, no Cubans at the moment as Cesar Corrales is Canadian

I would like to remind that propagating xenophobia is a crime in the UK

Feeling a bit underwhelmed myself....what is it that the ENB do between Christmas and the Summer each year?

June 2016 – Palais Garnier, Paris

    March 2017 – Sadler’s Wells

    May 2017 – Lodz, Poland

    June 2017 - Belfast

July 2017 – Tokyo and Nagoya

August 2017 – Royal Festival Hall

  9. Am i right in thinking that Tamara Rojo tends to partner herself with guest artists, that has been my impression for a while anyway, which must be very disheartening for the male company dancers.

As I was not under the impression that Rojo has invited so many guests to partner her I have gone through the last two year’s schedules. Of course I am sure I am forgetting some programs/performandes but what I have found is the following:

    Season  -  2016/17

Akram Khan’s Giselle:  Rojo – Streeter (company dancer)

Nutcracker: Rojo  -  Hernández (company dancer)

Skeaping’s GISELLE:  Rojo – Parish  (replacing Cao – Allen

    Season 2015-16

Barcelona - Swan Lake: Rojo  -  Hernandez (Company dancer)

NUTCRACKER: Tamara Rojo - Osiel Gouneo (guest dancer)

LE CORSAIRE Coliseum: Tamara Rojo – Hernandez (company dancer)

Le Corsaire Oman: Rojo – Hernandez (company dancer)

LE CORSAIRE PARIS: Rojo  -  Hernandez (company dancer)

BROKEN WINGS: Rojo  -  Mukhamedov (ENB’s Artistic Team member)

SWAN LAKE RAH  -  2016: Rojo  -  Hernandez (company dancer)

    Season 2014-2015

SWAN LAKE MANCHESTER: Rojo  -  Souza (company dancer)

OXFORD COPPELIA: Rojo  -  Acosta (Company dancer)

NUTCRACKER: Rojo  -  Souza (company dancer)

  10. I went last night and saw Tamara Rojo. Utterly, utterly stunning on several counts. Not to see this in the round but on an ordinary stage will forever seem second class.

I was sat in the Choir which provides a marvelous view with just a little part of the stage cut off. I didn't feel I missed anything and was also fascinated to see the orchestra at close quarters. The conductor has a screen by his podium but he also turns round when the principals are dancing. I was beguiled at times watching how this works.

I've seen this production several times over the years and always loved it. However, I think the quality just gets better and better. I've always been lucky to see top class principals (Edur/Oakes) and then Vadim's very first performance. Oh my goodness, that was sheer luck.  Last night, I felt Tamara hit extraordinary heights in technique and I've seen her dance many times.  Her fouettes were multiple, totally on the spot and yet also to 3 sides of the auditorium. As for Act 4, I just LOVE this version. The music, the 60 swans, the drama. Real hairs on the back stuff.

The swans were amazing - so well rehearsed and the effect is stunning. GO, GO, GO if you can

Just checked the RAH, there are 8 tickets for tonight’s performance and everything else is sold out… very glad for ENB but I was thinking of going back Sunday…
