Oh Congrats to your DD!!  👏🏼 I contacted US and they said accommodation can be booked and if DD is unsuccessful in gaining funding, then cancelled FOC. I think you just need to let them know it’s for NBS. We are making plans to go and view some of the accommodations so DD can see her options.

    Congratulations to both your dds.

I'm happy to see that US are now offering free cancellations as this wasn't the case last year & I had several conversations with staff about this & was first rejected but later on accepted that ...as we know funding can be a very last minute thing ! Also make sure you do say for NBS students as they will try & place the students together they  also were mindful that NBS students can be age 16+ unlike most of the other students who will be 18+. Again we have had no problems with dwell MSV accomodation & my daughter plans on staying there next year. I believe that there is refurb being done & rooms are being rebranded.

We used a storage unit last summer, it worked out quite cheap and much less stressful. I'll find the details when I get home but I remember there being a half price deal for students who booked early.

    Hi Dancing shoes,

    That would be great thx.

Hi. Just thought I would add not just for you but for all others currently in accommodation for NBS and the end of the summer term. And the dreaded ‘get out’. Whilst we all like to believe that they just have what they arrived with (full car for some) don’t be lulled into the idea that their possessions will now fit in the same car and you will be able to find a space at home for the summer. Lol.

There are multiple self storage units in and around the city offering special rates for students over the summer break. One company we used provided a van to pick up all the boxes etc and the best part was they delivered it back to the new flat in-time for our return in the Sept. No need to be in attendance either as we had informed uS staff before delivery. I’m sure there would be no difference for Dwell. All companies are fully insured, with very little hassle. Best decision we made. Happy to share info as best as I can if required.

    Hi balletbean,

I had heard of storage but have no idea how they charge ...is it per week / month? Are the rates reasonable . Well if taking her back after Christmas is anything to go by we will need a removal team & large ...very large van !! Lol

She a ' well I might need it' kind of girl !

Further to this, do people generally book the ‘full year’ 51 weeks or the academic year options? I can see they are priced differently on Dwell but US don’t seem to be offering that at this point for NewMedlock.

Originally we were booked for the 51wks( when had Medlock room )  ...yes agree with Dancers Dad as was the cheaper option. We are with dwell now for 48 wks but have booked for next year 44 wks. Big difference also between en-suite & non but suppose the kids know what they want & what the purse will stretch to ! Think quite a few are doing a shuffle & moving around ...maybe due to friendship groups as they have got to know one another ? Saying that from what I hear all of them get on & mix with each other.

Fully agree if you can go have a look around do.

Just to add the 44 wks at dwell does cover the NBS academic year I did DBL check !

Can I ask if anyone knows, if there is still a lean towards newmedlock for first years accommodation? Past posts I’ve seen seem to show a trend for newmedlock and I also spotted last year they seem to book up pretty quickly and with the opening/reopening of the additional accommodations in the area I wondered if there had been any shift as I’d ideally like DD to be with others from NBS.

    Thank you🙂

    Hi,

My daughter is in dwell. Originally was booked for Medlock en-suite room but due to late offer of a place we had to cancel & then with 12 days ....yes 12 days! we had to quickly find somewhere for her to live we tried Medlock with no luck so tried dwell MSV we managed to get her into a 4 bedroomed flat with no ensuite but we just needed accomodation.  Her flat has a shared toilet, shower room which are large & a shared kitchen ( small ) & no living/ dining room. As luck would have it it's worked out perfect for her only 2 of them sharing. There was excitement for Parkway re opening all being new etc but she has decided for next year she is staying in dwell & we have booked for an en-suite again 4 bedroomed flat, shared kitchen plus dining/ living space.,which I think is better when there will be 4 of them sharing.

I do know there are a few students who do live in various accomodations dotted around the area. Re offers & funding time scales I will say ........my dd was offered a place very soon after her audition .....funding was a different story don't give up hope waiting for funding....we were working on plan 'B' & almost was on its path but as I said with 12days to the start of NBS term my dd had the best news & one term in she's loving NBS & all it has to offer, also loves being in the heart of Manchester.

Good grief - fire alarms between 8pm and 3.30am last night: 3.

Total in the first 10 days: at least 10 (though I'm losing count).

In all my research on accommodation, how come I not once read about fire alarms?!

Current status: wondering about moving her out of New Medlock House.

Oh wow that's really bad !  The girls must be shattered ...not good for any of them ! I do hope they get this sorted asap.

Thank you to everyone all your help and advice. I cant believe how lucky we feel NBS has been a dream for us all as we didnt want our daughter to leave at 16  so to get such an amazing offer that allows her to live at home for a couple more years is a relief.

We are visiting next week for a tour although we are familiar with the building from previous dance. For those who have visited did you children dress smartly? I'm still on make a good impression but shes saying Jean's are fine and I'm old fashioned.

    Hi,

My daughter wore jeans. Think they just need to be comfortable. Miss Gray was very nice, the tour was informal & laid back.

We've booked in for a tour of NBS and Medlock on 19th May - all very exciting! However, no DaDA news as yet. If not offered a DaDA does anyone know when further details of enrolment will be sent out e.g uniform etc? Feeling a little in limbo at the moment!

We are going to NBS & Medlock on the 17th. Sorry can't help with uniform etc.

Thanks for this. My daughter (admittedly under my influence...) has managed to avoid all social media so far in her life so isn't on Instagram (yet) but if that's the way to go, she may join. I think she's going to sign up to WhatsApp at some point, so maybe others would be willing to have a group on there too in due course?

Good morning, whatever works for you & your daughter. I would presume that anyway they can keep in contact with each other would  be good. I don't do instagram myself so no idea how it works so don't know if it's a matter of joining....being private & just being able to do the dance group? but I'm sure others will know.

    Good morning everyone

What an amazing group this is! My dd has accepted a place at Northern for September and is 16. We travelled to Manchester in bank holiday Monday to look at New Medlock accommodation and booked there and then. Ezter was so helpful and very reassuring. I think like many of you say it’s more our worries than the children! We are also waiting on DaDa info.
We are now looking at booking one of the tours.

Good morning & Congratulations to your dd.

A good sign that you booked there & then so must be good accommodation. It is reassuring that experiences & information can be swapped makes it a little easier to ' let go' of our 16 year olds.

  11. Good evening,

Hope this is OK to do.....if not please admin delete.

My dd has been contacted by a few girls who are all going to be 1st years Sept '21. They have made a group on Instagram if any of your girls / boys want to join message me so I can give you my dd details & she can add them to the group.

    Just wanted to say hello.

My dd also accepted an offer for September today. We hadn't wanted to get our hopes up for a Dada and with another dancer studying at a conservatoire it would have been  push but thankfully it's worked out.

She is also 16 but we live close enough for her to commute. I'm a bit worried that she will find it harder to make friends as she wont be living with the other girls? Anyone else have experience of commuting?

    Thank you

Congratulations to your dd. Sorry can't help with the commute aspect. Im sure she will make friends just as the other girls will. Maybe arrange weekend shopping trips... Or window shopping at least! lol.

Got a DaDa offer late this afternoon, thank goodness. As long as it stays at the figure it suggests, we might be able to avoid remortgaging... Thank goodness. Hope others get something too.

Congratulations! Well done to your dd I bet she's very excited! We haven't heard anything yet, so hopefully soon if mails are being sent out.

The obvious one for any dancer would be physio with no restrictions on amount of appts per injury as some providers don’t appear to understand a student dancers life. Emphasis on the word ‘student’. Also check that the policy holders can provide care near to NBS. Seems unfair on a sick or injured teenager to have to travel across the city to access the care they need as well as one that would carry care over to your home district if treatment is split over term time and the holidays. The school are also excellent in ensuring a pupil never has to go to appointments alone. Not necessarily with a member of teaching staff but with a friend from their yr group.

BUPA has an excellent hospital at Didsbury which I’ve used myself, it’s on a direct bus route from outside Medlock or a 12min taxi ride away.

For more immediate care, before the call ‘Mum, I don’t wish to worry you, but.......’ 😉  There is an A&E a short walk down the road from NBS but if required the school don’t hesitate to call a cab. Not that the pupils fortunately have to use their services very often but the service and care received has no complaints.

Not forgetting of course that our DC do also come down with general sickness & ailments not just injuries. There is a GP practice at Cornbrook just a 15min walk away. Worth registering upon arrival as the practice covers the M15 postcode. They are very good with students as some have already been called up for their first vaccine 😷. Might be helpful to see which GP practice the policy providers recognise should they require a referral for general medical matters.  There is also a Gp walk-in clinic not far away for out of hours service.

Obviously all policies tend to cover an exclusion for past injuries or pre existing conditions. Past injuries can be a challenge for dancers when completing any declaration 😉

Good Luck. It’s difficult to recommend any particular policy as no two DC are the same.

Hope some of the above has helped. A little.

    Thanks balletbean,

    Very informative.

Good point about local to NBS & crossover to home. Also thx for the info about local Dr's / Walk-ins & A&E! Let's hope the later is NOT needed!

I think maybe a lengthy convo is needed with insurance company to tweek exactly what we need & where we need it.

On the website. I was just reading the website for the hundredth time and suddenly there it was! We did email to ask if the tours were suitable for us and they are - they're designed for people in our position as well as those interested in coming in the future.

NB We also asked when we'd hear about Dada - they couldn't say - sounded like they're waiting to hear back from Dada.

Just had another look on the website & found the dates too. Must have snook those on in between my many visits! Looks like we have the same pass time! Lol.... Also another question answered about whether we would benefit from the viewings. My dd has exams the last week of April so we would hope to go in early May. I would hope by the end of their Easter break  we should have Dada news... Well I'm hoping so!

The tours sound like a great idea and thankfully Eszter found some accommodation for DD at Medlock. Happy days!

That's great news! There should be a good mix of NBS girls there & all quite close to one another. Hopefully makes settling in easier.

No, not been to see. We noticed that NBS are doing tours of the school over the next couple of months and as we've never been there, we might go. It would make sense to look at the accommodation at the same time I guess.

Oh that sounds like a plan. Where did you see about the tours?

  18. Hi all.

Just checking in. Wondered if anyone has been into see the accommodation. Last time I spoke to Eszter she said we could go have a look around but with an hour & 45 mins journey thought it was best we wait until we know about funding. Waiting is the pits!! Hope you have had positive accommodation  news Twinkle.

  19. 2 minutes ago, Twinkle said:

Thankyou for your replies. I think I'll give Eszter a ring to see if she can sort something out for us.

Eszter is very nice & approachable. Just say your dd is 16 year old needs peers want her to be safe ( drop in safeguarding). Needs to be with other NBS students I presume you have  the direct number 0161 number?

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post so hopefully I am doing everything correctly. My DD has a place at NBS for Sept and I'm just trying to sort out accommodation. It seems most NBS 1st years are going to Medlock, is this the case? I had applied to dwell, but so far no other NBS students have applied there and they won't house a 16yr old with older students. Is anyone else planning to apply to dwell? If anyone has any advice/thoughts I would be really grateful (stressed Dance Mum!)

    Good morning twinkle,

DWELL would have been our go to if we didn't get Medlock but we have now sorted a room do you have the direct number to Medlock to be able to speak to Eszter who is dealing with NBS students?
