  1. I know a martial arts teacher in Manchester who has totally rigged his studio with cameras. He sometimes live streams his lessons over the internet.

I must say that it doesn't always work well. I'm guessing that you need to spend quite a lot on equipment and services to get the right upload speeds to make the process smooth and seamless. I think he's some way off achieving this at the moment.

that's cool! Never heard of that possibility before either. It's amazing what the internet can do nowadays!

  2. I've asked my friends about this whole livestreaming thing and they told me somehting about a website called picarto.tv, which is a website for creative live streaming. They offer all kinds of creative stuff and dancing seems to be a part of it, too. What really fascinated me about this was the fact that it's actually possible to interact with the person streaming. I've never given the idea too much thought but this does sound kind of interesting.

  3. I know this is a topic that's not quite familiar within the dance circle, but I've heard from friends there's the possibility to livestream your own performances? I know that this is a quite common thing in the gaming community (which I'm not a part of, but some of my friends are) and this actually sounds quite interesting. I've never given much thought to it, as I thought that maybe there's too much of a tutorial vibe that comes with it, but what do you think? I've personally never heard of such a possibility,

  4. I watched it (eventually, on TV) under the misapprehension that it was a 'ballet film'; it took me a lot longer than it should have to clock that it was in fact a kind of shlock-horror black psycho drama (comedy?) about an increasingly disturbed individual and it wasn't really about ballet at all. In so far as it was serious at all, it seemed to me to caricature and ridiculise (if there's such a word) mental health issues, and although the setting bore a superficial resemblance to the real world of ballet it could in fact have been set in any milieu where demands are made on people or people compete with each other. But mercifully I've now forgotten the details (Blacked out this Swan).

I feel the exact same way about this movie. You took the words right out of my mouth.

  5. Thank you! I'm relatively new to the forum so I always appreciate it when somebody helps me out a little  :) Such a cool thing thing for companies to actually livestream some of their productions. Never heard of it being done before so I'm glad to see that this is actually a thing. Love it.

  6. Watched Ballerina the other day and it was fantastic! The dance scenes, performed by the Royal Danish Ballet, are superb and the plot is entrancing. Loved Henning Kronstam, Kirsten Simone and Mette Honnigen in their roles were absolutely phenomenal and I wish this was available on DVD... A definite buy for me.

I like coming across ballet in a film unexpectedly.   There's a rare appearance by a young Evgenia Obraztsova in Klapisch's Russian Dolls, where she plays a visiting Russian ballet dancer with whom an English stagehand falls in love and sets out to woo.   There is little dancing but it's a charming role.  Have to say the stagehand is punching well above his weight with EO and it took some suspension of disbelief!

you mean the movie from 2005?

  7. I remember the first time I saw Elephant Man.  I cried practically all the way through.  He gave such a fabulous portrayal of a very brave and lonely man.

The acting world will definitely miss John Hurt.

Same here... One of my favorite movies ever. The scene where he shouts 'I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am a man!' still haunts me to this very day and every time I talk to somebody about it, I tear up. One of the most important movies every made. If you haven't seen it, you should stop what you're doing and watch it right away.

  8. I could not bring myself to boo at the ballet.  There are so many contributory elements to a given production, not all of which would be at fault, that you would inevitably be causing 'collateral damage' of the innocent.  The worst production I ever saw was a touring Canadian company's reworking of the Romeo & Juliet story, which was largely a rip-off of La La La Human Steps' style,  with a large dose of Wayne McGregor-on-amphetamines.  The choreography was awful to watch but incredibly difficult and exhausting to perform, and though I hated it overall, I still felt I had to clap the dancers' athleticism, skill and indeed survival.  The dancers looked very pleased with themselves at the end, and a small number of young spectators were on their feet hollering their support, which was also a reminder that sometimes when you hate something, it may be that you are just the wrong person to be watching it..

Exactly what I feel, So, not everyone thought the production was bad? Interesting how much opinions vary actually... I'd loved to see that production just to figure out what my reaction to it would be,

A Kirov Carabosse once told me he LOVES being booed by London audiences.

Really?? Why's that? Any particular reason?

  9. First of all, thank you so much for your recommendations! I wrote them all down :) This is one of my favorite topics as well!!

This is one of my favourite topics :)
The Children of Theatre Street is a lovely documentary film narrator by Princess Grace of Monaco about the ballet school at the Kirov.

Am I alone in hating Black Swan? I don't think it did the world of ballet any favours, providing a very jaundiced view of what life is like in a ballet company.

Does anyone recall a Disney feature film from many, many years back called Ballerina? I have long wanted to get a copy after having been thrilled by it as a child.

I've read about The Children of Theatre Street! Not that it really matters, but wasn't it nominated for an Oscar?

And you're not alone in hating Black Swan. Natalie Portman is an amazing actress, but I don't like how the ballet company is portrayed. As you said, it provided a very jaundiced view of life in a ballet company.

I'd also be interested in that Disney feature film! Do you have a link for that? I looked it up but I can't seem to find it...
