Inevitable once Anastasia was announced - the last sight will be her on a bed aimlessly moving around the stage - yes it’s a great dramatic role but it’s a shame she could not have a more pleasing ‘end of a career vision.’

Six decades
Six pieces representing each decade showing segments of works supported by The FriendsWould seem to me a more representative celebration…

Loved her dancing - I started out ballet watching with London Festival Ballet so I saw many of her performances. So many from that era now gone but it was a glorious company that included Elisabetta Terabust, Eva Evdokimova, Paul Clarke, Maina Gielgud. Very happy memories. Condolences to her family and all who worked or knew her

Having had a REALLY close look at next season I realise - forgive me if others had already mentioned this - that the season ends with a ballerina on a bed rotating round the stage. Is Anastasia act 3 the most bizarre and depressing ending to a season ever? Do we remember the uplifting endings of previous seasons with ballets such as Symphony in C etc…..

I’m sad that there is nothing from their back catalogue at all. LFB / ENB we’re my first ballet going company and I look back at the works and casts from that time with huge nostalgia.

It’s on at Queen Elizabeth hall May 27th & 28th. Cheap tickets seem to have gone already.

There are only a small number in each area (for the matinée tomorrow); and I hope at least some of those will be sold tomorrow morning.
But lots still available next week 🥲

It’s a perfect meal - tasty tempting starter / delicious main course / gorgeous sweet dessert. I just cannot understand why there are tickets still available!

I think we should also take into consideration the dancers. With long runs of classics the corp may be stretched at times - covid has not disappeared and next autumn / winter may be a problem again with infections. Keeping the main body of the dancers happy in repetitive performances could be a challenge. Yes, there may be interesting debuts ahead, but even the principals can surely only have a couple of performances of each role ahead of them with large gaps in their schedules - as per this season.

I'd like to see Richardson do Rudolf in the future but I wonder if next season might be considered a bit too soon for him? Given he's only done one big leading role so far, would he need to get a few more "straightforward" ones under his belt before tackling Rudolf? Bracewell would be my first choice for Rudolf debuts. I also, though I hesitate to say this as I fear I will be shot down, would be interested to see what Corrales would make of hte role.
I wonder if there will be any new Mary Vetseras or if there are sufficient existing ones that no debut slots will be available. As there are 15 performances, I suppose it will partly depend on whether each cast will get 3 performances each or only 2.
I've never done the lottery so I'm afraid I can't help.
I’d be very happy to see Corrales in this 👍🏻

I’ve checked the whole ROH calendar - this is it then. The season of full length works to fill the coffers and the slow demise of varied triple bills. Very disappointed indeed - although happy to see Mayerling and Cinderella back

Will Osipova still be performing in the Kyle Abraham work? As there's no actual cast list it's hard to tell.
I hope she hasn't had a serious injury. My first thought during her solo at the Ukrainian gala when she stamped her foot down! I said to myself then ‘don’t mess that foot up!’

I’m trying to remain calm here - I missed her in 2020 due to shutdown and I’m missing her again tomorrow ….😩

I was at the general rehearsal yesterday.
from my point of view all the issues I had at the premiere are still there. More on that once I’ve seen a couple of performances…
However, the finale is frankly awful and a real anti climax - needs to be changed but I doubt that will happen.
On a better note - act 3 pdd was very well danced!

And sadly I was another interval leaver. I was very disappointed with this - is it the subject matter I wonder as no production seems to succeed. I found it all too repetitive - both musically and choreographically.
I left feeling nostalgic for some of the ENB back catalogue that seems to have been discarded.- 5

Oh Kevin....
Great dancing from all, interesting premieres, but what I wanted was light and uplifting for the return to the theatre...

Change of cast notification.....
Corrales now out of Cellist as just back from Italy

I so wanted to love this ballet. However it is too long and too busy - as most of us have stated. More thoughts after seeing the second cast I think

I've just watched this with great interest. Lynn Seymour is, to my mind unsurpassed and to me Dowell shows why I find David Hallberg not quite right. I couldn't think who danced Vera - does anyone know?

A train journey home and chance to catch up on posts after a draining double R&J and collect my thoughts.
The matinee was very much Naghdi/Ball, the first chance to see them since that fabulous debut in October 2015, my wife’s most treasured performance. Yesterday was very fine and I am looking forward immensely to the live relay with the director selecting what we are to see. Front row of the Orchestra Stalls has many attractions but with so much activity across the entire stage, it can be a little like watching a tennis match. You can of course choose what to focus on and the detail is tremendous. A couple of minor slips - Matthew Ball to me join Mercutio and Benvolio a beat too early when launching towards the front and I thought he was in danger of losing his dagger when confronting Paris in the tomb. I agree with some of the comments about Yasmine’s rather ‘polite’ stabbing which I thought fractionally late. But their whole journey together was wonderful to see at close quarters and it’s fabulous that their performance will be relayed. It seems slightly odd to me that the broadcast is a full 10 days after their first performance and there are no other R&J performances since last night. I’d like to think the reason for the gap is so that Yasmine isn’t having to cope with another deluge of bouquets although she is of course dancing Firebird etc.
Whilst I was transported by Romeo and Juliet, I was less impressed with some of the supporting cast. I think we’ve had stronger Mercutios than Valentino Zucchetti and Tybalts than Gary Avis. And it underlined for me that what made the Hayward/Corrales 2nd performance so compelling was the astonishing strength of all the principals and how well matched they were.
That need for consistency across the main principals also struck me in the evening’s performance. Romeo (David Hallberg), Mercutio (James Hay) and Benvolio (Calvin Richardson) seemed rather mismatched to me - I couldn’t get ‘the unlikely lads’ out of my mind. Yes some great dancing but not that camaraderie of some casts and not helped by height differences. Ryoichi Hirano’s Tybalt was menacing.
This was a shame because last night we were treated to a truly visceral Juliet from Natalia Osipova, quite astonishing. Rather than simply go limp/play dead when forced to dance with Paris, she demonstrated utter revulsion at the prospect, with her body desperate to get away from his holds. Rob’s already referred to her manic dash from bedroom to Friar Laurence etc. But there was also tangible deliberation in how she decided upon what she must do and how often in Act 3 she turned to look to Romeo’s exit from her bedroom. Her stabbing was brutal and her death achingly beautiful in its resolution. Despite being in the Balcony Stalls, I felt as if I were in the tomb as the slow curtain dropped.
It was very much Juliet’s performance last night and I couldn’t help thinking what might have had Romeo been more of a match. David Hallberg was fine but given such a Juliet, I’d have preferred a much more spirited, energised Romeo. I’d have loved to see Matthew Ball as Natalia Osipova’s Romeo ... but not on the same day as partnering Yasmine Naghdi.
And many thanks to the fabulous friends, harlots, and mandolins who add so much to the enjoyment, and to Pavel Sorokin and the Orchestra.
I would love to see an Ospiova / Corrales R & J!
