So DD1 really enjoyed her week at ENBS summer school last week and its international ethos. We really enjoyed watching three classes on Friday too.

For anyone interested in auditioning for next year there have been a few changes as follows:

Entry is by audition (either live or video)

There is no longer a one week option. Students are recommended to attend for four weeks but there is also an option to attend for two weeks (any two of the four).

The Repertoire performance at the end is only for those students who have attended for all four weeks.

There are also one week courses running in Autumn and Spring (application by photograph and form).

Is it a residential programme? I’ve just had a look on the website but it’s not very clear xx

I really like CrazyLife's post. This is the first time that we have experienced auditions for JAs and I must admit that the audition itself seemed to be so simple and there was so much emphasis on flexibility exercises and no actual dance/musicality content that it would seem that the RBS really just takes ones that are super flexible and then molds them. Does anyone have any idea if they stand a chance if put on the SWL? I think it seems strange that there even put gthem on it because who is realistically going to give up a place at the RBS!! When my son came out of the audition he said that a lot couldn't even do basic gallops, etc., so does this mean that if you haven't got a super flexible body then you don't have a chance from day 1? I would really like some advice from other mums about why they are put on the SWL (and if it's worth trying again!) and why an earth they choose children that have no experience of dance whatsoever!

    Looking forward to your answers!

    Hi Tito,

My DD is not at all flexible and has never mastered the splits but was offered a Y6 place so I don’t think that flexibility can be the driving factor. I guess we have to remember it’s just the opinion of one panel on one particular day and each panellist will have their own preferences in what they look for in a dancer. I think it is completely impossible to second guess anything at these auditions. I also loved CrazyLife’s post.

    Xxx

My dd is already a JA in Birmingham and will be going into Y6 in September. They haven’t told us the times yet but I think it may depend on how many sessions you are allocated (there are two classes). Well

    done to your dd!

Thank you xxx Look forward to meeting you in September!

Birmingham yr 6 JA timings have been -

    24 weeks - 3.15-5.30pm

32 weeks I believe were a slightly later start either 3.30-5.45 or 3.45-6.00pm

Whether that’s changing from September I don’t know but hope that helps a little x

Really helpful to have an idea ... thank you xx

  6. We have had a very unexpected yes for DD! This may now sound like a really stupid question but does anyone know the timings for the JA year 6 classes in Birmingham? We’ve been offered the Birmingham programme and I can’t seem to find details of times etc xxx

    Oops...

    If there isn't any spaces.

I have tried contacting them for the last 2 weeks with no luck 😣

I also had trouble getting hold of them - no reply to emails or phone calls. We booked Moorland instead. Had a lovely welcoming email back straight away and DD is really looking forward to going.

My dd did OPES for the first time last year and absolutely loved it. She was 11 and she made so many friends from around the country and abroad, all of whom she has stayed in touch with (the brilliant  side to social media!) She loved every one of the teachers who all gave something different and said they learnt such a lot, which was reflected by the showing of work at the end of the week being exceptional for the short time they had been there. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend xxx

She also did the Elmhurst summer school and she thought Opes was better in terms of the amount of dancing they did, the social side in the evenings and fun they had in the dorms.   I would agree looking purely at the showing of work, which was better at Opes, but this is of course our experience only.

I hope your dd has a great time wherever she goes, once she does one summer school she’ll be hooked however and want to go every year so think long and hard 🙈🤣!

Thank you so much.  Yes - she attended RAD last year and absolutely loved it.  Unfortunately, we missed out on getting a place for her this year as we were waiting for the result from RBS summer school (she was wait-listed). I think we are now committed to attend something every Summer! :)

    Dd has done both, twice.

She really enjoyed Moorland and it gave her a bit of a confidence boost after a tough year.  It was a lot smaller than OPES and quite personalised.  She was a bit behind in technique in certain areas but they encouraged her to choreograph a contemporary style solo for example, working to her strengths.  There were a lot of full time Moorland students on the course but she got on very well with them all.

OPES is a lot bigger with more students but the standard of teaching is very high.  Dd liked to do it to help her technique.  She felt that there could occasionally be a bit of favouritism but that was offset by the excellent teaching.

Really useful feedback - thank you so much! ❤️

  10. Just as an update, we found out last week the DD was successful at her audition and has a place for September! All still reeling with the shock but incredibly excited! And through this forum she has made contact with a friend who may also be attending! So glad I found the forum before starting the process :0)
