  1. Thank you all for sharing these wonderful, rich reactions to the various casts and performances -- having been away from London for a few years I have absolutely adored reading and experiencing them through you, both with great nostalgia for my favourite artists and excitement for the new debuts I'd have loved to see.

Reading the fouetté conversation made me think of Tamara Rojo's heyday with the RB. I don't know if my memory is just dazzled, but I'm sure she used to do something like all doubles for the first 16 counts, followed by 2 singles and a triple for the last 16. Or perhaps she used to vary the front half and keep to singles at the back. Does anyone else recall? Either way, they were fabulous!

  2. At risk of causing an avalanche... watching those videos, I am mostly struck by the loss of finesse in Polunin's dancing. I'm not talking about the 'wildness' of his interpretation - I have always enjoyed his performances and find his characterisation passionate, naturalistic, and quite captivating - and his ballon is still a thing to behold. I don't need princely restraint from this role. But at many points, there is an evident lack of precision and polish in much of the actual dance quality - the landings; the pirouettes; some of the partnering - which I find a rather sad reminder of greatness let slip away. It's still there in glimmers, but what could have been...

I know many will disagree, but especially compared to the (still) incredible brilliance and delicacy of Cojocaru's dancing - and I hold my hands up as a lifetime devotee, though not without good reason, I think - for me, there is a distinct gap that appears.

(And as another member of the 'younger generation' - frankly people can tattoo themselves wherever they want, but I find his rebelliousness nothing short of childish. Again, each to their own heroes!)

Other than that - it looks utterly fabulous, and I'm devastated to have missed it.

Someone mentioned higher up the thread the 2nd act lift.  I also loved it.  Whether it was a 'safety' lift, or whether that's how Natalia would have done it anyway, I don't know, but....it worked beautifully.  The way Matthew slowly turned around with her aloft above his head was just lovely.  It really made it seem as if she were hovering over him, protecting him.  Loved loved loved it.

I agree entirely - I thought it was beautiful, a much more musical and ethereal version of the lift than the usual. Just lovely.

As ever, Osipova was unparalleled in the role, and I was absolutely in raptures over the partnership with Hallberg until the ill-fated injury. But Matthew Ball did wonderfully to step in at such short notice and I was glad to get a sneak peek of the upcoming pairing for Swan Lake. Emotionally, though, I agree that the evening felt somewhat cruelly curtailed, with Hallberg & Osipova unable to bring the intensity of Act I to fruition, and Ball & Osipova not having had the chance to build up the connection over the course of the full ballet. I'm looking forward to seeing the full expression of this partnership in Swan Lake - and keeping everything crossed that Hallberg will be able to perform next week and give us the Giselle we were all hoping for.

  5. Agree with so many of these.

Osipova and Ed Watson in Mayerling last season had me bawling - the final PDD just had an extra weight of inevitability in the tragedy; these two figures who are so clearly not long for this world. Marvellous!

I also remember, alongside the Manons, Mayerlings, R&Js, etc. - a performance of Swan Lake with Alina Cojocaru & Johan Kobborg in which the Act II PDD had me practically on the floor. I can never explain why - it was just something magical in the air that evening. Indescribably beautiful, and sorrowful.

I often find myself shedding a tear in Sleeping Beauty, too, often with a debuting Aurora. I think it's some vicarious feeling of the pride they and their families must feel when they get to finally wear that pink tutu and become a *proper* ballerina!

They took them back? I thought that in previous years the ROH box office wouldn't take returns of visiting companies for resale. I may be wrong.

Seemingly yes - rang the Box Office and told them what they were for and they just asked me to email them over.

If not... they will probably soon make a reappearance here!
